The usual naive optimism still prevails, but WCs are won by competitors.....guys who take responsibity for the results and are competitive by nature. That's why Spies was such a hopeless case in the last RWC...not a competitor. The same is true of the following players:


JJ, Serfontein, Lambie, Hougaard, Reinach, Goosen, Malherbe, Lood....Mohoje.



Others just aren't skilled enough but give you everything they have, Coetzee is a good example. Not a fetcher, power runner or tight forward alternative....Coetzee is the Duracell bunny of flankers. He will be outplayed by every major country fetcher, but at least he tries.


We have to find physicallly skilled players that are really competitors. If we don't we will bomb in the quarters or semis. And the longer we mess around with players like Lambie at 10, the less likely we will be prepared. The YE tour was a huge step back in terms of selection.

JJ a wing and i beleive good enough to play for the Boks.
Sefontein looking better as time passes. Lambie and Reinach the likely Sharks combo who should grow as a pairing this year. The uncertainty is Frans what will he be like. Will frans play flyhalf for the sharks?
Hougaard. He must not allow himslef to be shackled. If he plays his natural game he can be very effective.
Goosen. Progressing well but is still very young. May make it as he can cover 15 also. His 2015 form will be crucial. Malhebe is a must for the Boks if he can regain fitness and remain fit. Strong at scrum time and very good outside the scrum.Lood a great young lock on the rise. Should be one of the locks. Needs to build on good 2014 Super 14.Mohoje - well first see if he can command a place in the cheetahs lineup. He should never have been picked this early. Quota pick.
Morne - it looks like he will be back in squad as he appears to be on the rise again.
Matfield - it would be disasterous if this all too deficient player makes the squad. We simply cannot afford to play a tight 4 against NH opposition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is key that he gets the boot. Otherwise he will talk himself into the test side. 
Jannie must be one of our props in the squad. Manage the guy properly. Ditto re so many of the Bok squad.Alberts is a good NH player and also can cover lock. He should be in the squad barring a poor Super 15.
Frans. Well lets see how he goes. Last years form would not bre good enough.There is enough opportunity for guys to challenge for spots in the final squad. 
Meyer didnt distinguish himself last year. Hope he has weeded out the weak links.

Lat time Mozart picked a side for the 2015 WC, 11 of the 2011 WC squad members were in his side.   Despite all the hullabaloo about reffing - the squad was not winning material.   There were way too many has-beens in that team to take us through to the final stages of the competition. 
I asked him repeatedly how a team that failed in the past would make it this time around - with 2 quarters of the team being over 30 years of age by the time the WC comes around.     
Just one question about the following quote:-
"Morne - it looks like he will be back in squad as he appears to be on the rise again."
Where did you get that one from?   Granted - Morne has been picked a few times as staring flyhalf for Stade Francais, but every time that happened the team lost the games.     It cannot just be co-incidence - Morne is a negatve in any team since he absically neutralizes the backline.   He remains a liability for any team he plays in - end of story.

 Mike your take on 2011 is way way out. We had 80 % of the possession against OZ and should have  won the game easily as it was a very domiant performance. 
There can be little doubt we would have clobbered nz and won the RWC but for Bryce Lawrence.The very medicocre French side outplayed the abs in the final.

 Beenz, we should have won despite the ref in 2011.  We were stupid.  Almost all the possession and territory and we lose by a whisker...Morné should have blitzkieged them with drop goals alla 99, but NOoo! we wanted to win with tries.  We should have gotten our heads in front first....but bygones is bygones.  In a RWC. it doesn't matter if you win ugly.

Our cricketers are more or less sorted for the CWC but sadly, the RWC is a year too early for us. Like someone said, it is only Vermeulen that is a certainty.

Deddy at this stage I'm not sure. The only players I am comfortable with at this stage are:

 

Willie

 

Habana 

 

Pollard

 

Beast

 

Strauss

 

Etzebeth

 

 

Vermeulen.

 

 

Look at that list for a moment. Every one of those players is a fighter, a player who tries to dominate his opponent. For the rest we will have to see....can Victor and Jannie maintain form....is JP still fast enough.....what is the real story with Fransie's knees. I would have had Jean on the list, but I fear he is gone.

 

So as dennie says, we have half a team at this stage.....but that's a great core.

Players that WILL be the cause of us exiting the WC at the quarter finals stage are in order of liabilities:
Matfield, Morne, Steenkamp, Pienaar, Kirchner, Spies, Jean, Alberts, Schalk, Louw, Jannie, Hendricks and du Preez.
All we can say is thank fuck Fourie and Bakkies have retired.
But our biggest liability is our useless coach.

Geez Blikkies, only Vermeulen, and I thought I might be a bit pessimistic!  On that note, losing Vermeulen to injury is almost unthinkable.

80% possession inevitably means two things -
*   poor quality possession; and more importantly*   inability to utilize possession constructively.
Both were seriously in evidence in the quarterfinal - but even more so in the round-robin game against Wales.    If it was only an issue in the Aussie game - why were they so poor in the Welsh game?   
The Bryce Lawrence story has been beaten hollow - but the whole issue of constant poor performances by the Sprngboks in tests in 2010 and 2011 has been forgotten - and the same players was in the WC squad.   Bad news - most of them.

On your list of players who will cause a failure Dave I find many of your former favourites.....Steenkamp, Kirchner and Spies being great examples. We are only missing Wynand and Werner Kruger. If the past is prologue, we can exp ect to find many of your current favs on the scrap heap in a year or two....if you were soooo wrong in the past.....how can we trust you to  be right about Step and Jy Weet Mos.

 

You seem to be better at cricket....your non appreciation for Faf aside.

Yeah Moz good players in their day but the difference being that their day was some time back and I would not be stupid enough to think they still have it like our clueless coach does.
My cricket calls are spot on as we are number 1, the selectors get my calls right bar crap players like the two Petersen,  Berhardien, Mc Laren, Abbott....as for Faf he is good enough and makes my squad but Rossouw, Miller, Stiaan v/Zyl and de Kock are better.
With rugby my calls are spot on unlike yourself and our coach who keep getting it wrong and hence the 56% win record against the top rugby nations last year.
If my selections were taken on board our record would be 85% with a proper coach.

 We will have to wait and see what Super 15 produces.   Matfield did not play in the two curtain raisers of the Bulls and they can do without him.    He will only weaken the team by his presence.

Moz you seem a little blind to the stats. If stats tell you that JP goes for 5 an over and is on par with 95% of the spinners involved in the WC with regards to runs per over conceded and strike rates then somethings tells me you don't know what you are talking about.
I have provided those very stats myself. Stats in cricket don't lie.
So sorry to inform you of this but you are wrong about JP and the WC will prove that. He will on average go at 5 an over and will pick up the odd wicket......more of a 5th bowler we cannot ask.
Sadly however I think SA will also play useless Berhardien in the side

 Yes he will bowl 10 and go for 5 an over which is his career average. That works for combined with the fact that I actually rate him as a spinner. Good action, flight and a little turn.
