Handré Pollard, the seasoned flyhalf for the Vodacom Bulls, asserts that the clash between South Africa and New Zealand is unparalleled in the realm of international rugby. This rivalry, steeped in history and mutual respect, is the sport's pinnacle, according to Pollard, who shared his insights on The Boks Unpacked podcast ahead of this year's four-Test series dubbed Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry.

"There’s something about us playing New Zealand that brings out the best in the Springboks," Pollard remarked. He described the fixture as not only the sport's greatest rivalry but also a deeply revered tradition, blending fierce competition with profound respect. "You try and kill each other for 80 minutes but there’s always that mutual respect between both nations," he added, highlighting the intense yet respectful nature of these contests.

"For me personally, playing against the All Blacks is the fiercest competition but with the most respect always."

Pollard also delved into the evolution of the Springboks under the guidance of coach Rassie Erasmus, who took the helm in 2018. He credited the initial years under Erasmus with laying a solid foundation that allowed for a more expansive game in subsequent seasons. "We’ve really enjoyed the new strategies, but it all started with getting the basics right," Pollard explained, acknowledging the less glamorous but crucial aspects of building a successful team.

The double World Cup winner praised South Africa's depth of talent, which he believes has been instrumental in enhancing the team's overall play. "We’re just so blessed with so many good players in this country. It is absolutely ridiculous in every single position," he enthused.

Addressing the perceptions of the Springboks' playing style under attack coach Tony Brown, Pollard emphasized the simplicity and effectiveness of their approach. "People think Tony coaches it very expansive and all that, but it’s really not. It’s very simple, very basic rugby," he clarified. This foundational approach, focusing on gain line and physicality, sets the stage for the more spectacular elements of their game.

"Especially Test rugby, it’s always going to be gain line and physicality and then off the back of that, the nice things come and guys can put on a show for you."

As the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series approaches, fans and players alike anticipate another thrilling chapter in this storied contest, where glory is derived as much from the spirit of competition as from the final score.
