Sharky - not too far from you, just outside Charlotte. I have owned a few different bikes, nothing bigger than 550. Just sold one a few months ago and swore if I ever buy another it will be a big, loud monster and I would look into joining a group to ride with - seems by far the safest way to travel on a bike. Too many close calls with dumb drivers otherwise. Have fun on that piece of American decadence

Sharkie when I was in St Louis our marketing dept asked me to drive an antique Harley through a display of competitive product....it turned out to be quite a night. It was drizzling, making the wet cobble stones super slick. And the Harley was huge....seemed longer than an S class. The guy who loaned the bike told me the last guy who tried to kick start the thing ended in hospital. Needless to say I asked him to start it.
Once on, slipping on the cobblestones in the dark was something else....I was riding Suzuki GSXRs at the time, light as a feather.
I made it, just, and we also had the startling experience of seeing a guy take his woman on the bonnet of a car. It was St Louis at night! 

The piece was entered in the Addy contest. Won the Mid West Region and did quite well in Nationals....a dark, 50 s throwback atmosphere...done to the Leader of the Pack. Right at the end I was unmasked as it were....but the real star was that mammoth 50s Harley.

They probably had you on a Glide or a Road King. Those are what biker people call 'couches'. Large, brash, rotund, very typically American bikes.

There was an excellent deal at the local HD dealer on a Road King limited edition with hard paniers and very low mileage (186 miles) but I need to get my bike license before I can buy a bike and a Road King would be a bit of overkill for me. It is also metallic brown which is hardly my first choice.

I just plan to go on 1 or 2 hour rides on the country roads here around my home. Using a King for that would be like hunting a mouse with a 12 gauge Plus - then there really wouldn't be any room in my garage for it.

Not sure about your State, but Illinois has quite a tough motor bike test....you have to make a lot of tight low speed turns. But you bring your own bike....so it might make sense to rent something small to get through the test. A Harley is probably the least agile machine. 

In North Carolina you go on a 4 day course. Thursday night, Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday. It is 10 hours theory and the rest riding. If you pass the course, you get documentation which you take to the DMV - they test your eyes, you do the theory test and you get your license.

Most of the motorcycle dealers and some of the community colleges offer these courses to make some extra money because it is not cheap cheap. $ 375 for the course. And every week all these guys are full with 15 - 20 students. If I do the more advanced courses I can get a discount on my insurance.

They put you on little 250cc Honda Rebels.

You dont have to worry about me - I have ridden stacks of bikes. I am not worried at all.

Going to watch Taranaki tonight hopefully kick butt against Tasman at Rugby Park, New Plymouth in NZ's championship final. Rare occasion having a final sans any top teams .

 Back in the late 70s my old man passed on an immaculate Vincent Black Shadow for 1500 $ he bought a Holden Station wagon instead ! Oh well at least he got himself a TRiumph Trident ....

 A few notable absences in the confessional, Hakwa, 3ku1.  I also notice that Beeno has not confessed - strange because he is such a religious fellow & some would say he is in dire need of confessing on many subjects.
I anticipate we will discover that Beeno has managed to maintain a child-like demeanour in spite of the advancing years (60s is my guess).

RooiAAS is too chicken to give us his age....he loves pretending he is still a young rebel. But the only thing that rebels now is his fa lse teath as he tries to fit them back in in the morning. A coward.

 I box and train barehanded on bags and after years of bloody knuckles my fists are like Iron at age 24. I doubt mike Tyson in his prime would last 15 seconds v me. If a marines hands are considered weapons mine must be nuclear weapons

As Mike Tyson said, everybody has a plan until you hit them in the face. I thought that was quite insightful.
