Watson to lead Kings

 Sep 20,2012

Written by: SARugby.com Editor

Southern Kings director of rugby Alan Solomons has confirmed that flanker Luke Watson will captain the side in next year's Super Rugby tournament.

The former Bok has led the EP Kings in the Currie Cup's First Division this season. He missed the opening rounds due to a shoulder operation and a quad strain but has impressed since his return, scoring eight tries in four matches.

"Luke is a player that will score plenty of tries for your team," Solomons told keo.co.za.

"But it's his general play that has been very impressive. He's been in great form since coming back from injury."

Solomons believes that Watson could even add value to the Springboks.

"Luke has proven he is a quality player and he can make an impact at a higher level, but it's up to (Springbok coach) Heyneke Meyer to decide on who he wants to use in his team," he said.

Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that Western Province fly-half Demetri Catrakilis has signed a two-year deal with the Kings.

Catrakilis did not feature in any of the Stormers' matches during this year's tournament and his inabilty to break into their matchday squad is believed to be the reason for his move to the Kings.

"Demetri is the more experienced player among our fly-halves," said Solomons.

"He's shown great form during the Currie Cup Premier Division over the last two seasons for WP.

"His kicking at goal and out of hand has been excellent. I'm surprised he hasn't played Super Rugby for the Stormers."

That was a logistical error, not revised to 2013.

As if junior was never going to be the captain.

No surprise there. He alone is reason enough for the Kings to fail. His poison will slowly  erode the Kings team. As he did with province and the Boks in the time he was with them. But seriously, who else were the Kings gonna have as captain, I mean seriously, they were never going to make that decision fairly or democratically!

Value to the Boks!!!! I doubt that very much. Luke was okay at provincial level but never made an impression at Bok level. How old is he now. My guess around 27?

Beeno

Pulke is 29 years old - and I msut add that Solomons was a bad ssistant to Mallett and he is worse now.    He is a person that can be used - without too much value in return.   Luke Springbok material - my ass.   In any event he is disruptive in any team and has been thus for years - so who needs him around.

The Queens is going to be beaten badly and if they get one log point next year - I will be amazed.

Solomons was a prick wearing a Springbok Blazer and he has just validated that with his statement.

Puke was a political appointed Springbok, and sub-standard as an international player.

Once he retires the Govn. will appoint him to the SA Rugby Board or make him minister of sport...watch.

He is playing well in the division that the EP Queens are in now because that is the level/dividion of rugby that he is suited to.
