Ex Keo

Jean de Villiers says the first two Tests against Argentina will be the Springboks’ most important with regards to building some early momentum in the Rugby Championship.

The Boks will play Argentina in Cape Town on 18 August before facing the Pumas in Mendoza on 25 August. They’re the easiest fixtures when one considers that the Boks have never lost to Argentina, and that the other two teams in the tournament, Australia and New Zealand, have enjoyed a good record against South Africa in recent times.

But on Wednesday, the Bok captain said that Argentina won’t be easy-beats, and that the first two matches of the campaign are vitally important for reasons beyond results.

‘It [complacency] is a trap we won’t fall into,’ said De Villiers. ‘These two games are the most important in the tournament. Argentina will be psyched up given it’s their first appearance, they will be throwing everything they have at us.

‘For us, it’s important to build on what we achieved in that England series. We were disappointed with the way we ended the series [with a draw in Port Elizabeth]. We have to look at the positives of that series and bring it all together in one 80-minute performance.

‘We see it as a big positive to play against Argentina, and we’re not looking past that.’

The majority of the squad got together on Sunday, while the Sharks’ Boks, who competed in the Super Rugby final in Hamilton, have now joined the team in Cape Town.

The Boks will enjoy two weeks of preparation ahead of that first Test against Argentina, a marked difference to the build up to the England series where they were only afforded a few days together before the first Test.

‘There’s a different mindset knowing you don’t have another tournament to go back to,’ said De Villiers. ‘We played against England knowing we would have to go back to the Super 15. But now all of our focus is on this tournament [the Rugby Championship]. It must also be a positive that we have a whole extra week to prepare compared to that England series.’

The Bok captain defended the game plan, and believes it could bring them success in the coming months. He did concede that the team would need to be more accurate in their implementation of this playing pattern.

We didn’t have much time for preparation ahead of that England series, so we stuck to a simple game plan. In saying that, we scored two great tries on the counterattack in the second half of that first Test, and we’ve not seen that side of Bok rugby for awhile.

The rugby we played in first half of the second Test was outstanding. There are areas that we can improve but there are also good signs. Hopefully we can evolve, but the more rugby changes the more it stays the same. It’s about getting into the right areas and taking your opportunities.’

De Villiers also defended flyhalf Morné Steyn, who along with the Bok game plan came in for some strong criticism after the third Test against England.

The skipper feels that Steyn is the right man for the Boks and that the only area in Steyn’s game that is below par is his goal-kicking.

I tend to disagree with that perception [that Steyn is in a bad space mentally]. His general play in that England series was very good, it was only his kicking at goal that let him down a bit. (big shock for all the Morne knockers whohave of course overstaed teir case)

‘We’re so used to him kicking at 90 percent, so when he doesn’t there is some concern. But his decision making on attack has been good, and he’s varied his play well.

He’s in a good place mentally, and hopefully he can sort out the kicking. We are not too concerned.’

Jean expect a lot fo flack for these comments. Some have really got the bit between their teeth and have let their imaginations so run away with them that Morne is now seen as an utter disaster. Feel free to pop in some time and explan matters to the oaks who are bedside themselves with indignation regarding Morne's continuance with the Boks.

Expect uninformed criticism of the game plan as well from the MUNCHER AND MIKE ET AL. . Uninformed as the oaks forget about those great tries scored against England. They imagine that Meyer is about ten man rugby, ignoring also the fact that the bulle scored the second most tries in the Super 15 with Morne at flyhalf nogal!!

Its doom and gloom here for the rest of mMyer's term as coach - there can only be disaster awaiting you Jean.

WTF is the Argies even doing in the tri nations can't anyone freakin count.?

Seriously though surely including Samoa instead of Argentina would have provided a much better spectacle and better quality running rugby... Especially considering how Samoa all but kicked your yarpy butts in the World Cup. Doubt wether you'd be keen on facing their unique tackling style again though LMAO

Whoever dreamed up a four nations comp that includes Argentina needs their freakin head read. Will be a complete whitewash surely and hopefully not a permanent fixture cause NZ , Arstralia and SA are all in a class of therir own... Well NZ is anyway  - not sure about you yarpies after the Super 15 trouncing or even the arstralians for that matter come to think of it as they were crap too.

May as well just hand the Kiwis the Four Nations trophy now.

I would love to see Polynesian countrys involved but I would imagine RFU is more interest in Argentinas money, than developing the poorer nations like Samoa and Fiji.

Argentina in time will benefit greatly from this;

1. Media coverage for the team in arguably the second greatest annual tournament.

2. This will mean more money for players and development of national premiership teams

3. The national teams will get stronger, which will feed in with more money again

4. The national teams will then develop feeder teams and school level rugby will increase

Well thats the theory at least.

We have prettier women (by a very long way), better weather, more brains which is why we take all your jobs in NZL, better food, more friendly people...The list is endless...Why dont you go join a NZL rugby site instead of taking every opportunity you can to have a dig at South Africans!! and its Japies u dumb prick..If you gona say it, get it right.. Now remove the chip from your shoulder and speak to us as fellow human beings or piss off..

Gareth, I think you are on the right track. It must be something to do with money and the fact that, for a lot of the year, the first choice Samoan players are applying their trade in the UK where they are setting themselves up for life after rugby. Loyalty is where the money is. Samoa can not compete with the Salaries they get offered in Europe. They have their own competition with Japan, Samoa and Tonga and its very well contested because Samoa rugby team throughout the year vs Samoa at world cup are two different things. Argentina have showed since 2007 that they are getting stronger.. They beat France twice (in France too) in 07 and I could be wrong but I think France knocked one of the big boys out (U like that Brycy) and then went on to make it to the Semi-Finals when a much more fancied team didnt (U like that again Brycy). They then gave a great showing at the 2011 WC again so they can certainly upset SA, Aus or Nzl at home if you not on your game. They are very passionate and especially when their home crowd gets behind them.

Seems IRB is already getting more involved in Argentina.

http://www.irbsevens.com/news/newsid=2063350.html#road+rio+underway+sevens+referees

The IRB has announced the match official appointments for the upcoming HSBC Sevens World Series, which kicks off on Australia's Gold Coast on October 13-14 and adds a new venue in La Plata, Argentina.

 Thanks for proving my point.

I never once disagreeded with you regarding the NZ dominace, in fact you can go troll some threads see I know it to be true and even rated the Chiefs going on to be champs before their knock out game Crusaders.

To quote you directly; " If you yarpies " had prettier women , better weather, , better food, more friendly people...why then are all you yarpies flocking to NZ to live????LMAO."

See you address us "yarpies", so you are talking to me too. (It's OK, I understand thinking is hard.)

I just pointed out that we aren't leaving for any of stupid BS you listed, but we are leaving because there are no jobs and extremely high crime rate.

Oh and which post does your comment about us leaving the country fall under, Rugby or Olympic?

Because there sure as shit isn't a "stupid belongs here" forum.

My Bok brothers if you feed the monkey he will not go away!!!!

Nonetheless, the simple answer to your question Brycy why the Argies are involved and not the Samoans is because they do not have stadiums that can hold 50,000 people.......................

Brycy, the last 3 or 4 years Mrs NZL has been a South African girl and a few years ago Arnold Du Toit was Mr NZL. Any guess where he came from. We have already established you are not the best looking people on the outside, at least try not be ugly inside too.

Our country has its problems, we come to NZL for a better chance at equality and life and we dont come to harm you guys so why do you attack us personally on public sites. It just proves your ignorance and people just feel sorry for you because it shows you have a major superiority complex.

We are here to talk rugby and not attack other nations personally. No one is disagreeing with you that the AB's have been a better team over the past few seasons than SA. We respect NZL. We want to discuss and share thoughts on what SA can do to change that around and be more consistent. Its just a bit of fun and is nice to see everyone elses thoughts on certain topics but when we gota read "yarpies get your butts kicked" and other such crap, it takes away from what this is supposed to be. Just grow up man and enjoy the site as it is meant to be.
