Having read through some of the threads about your win in the Games and some of the responses, i have a question for you.

Could any of you please go into the site records and find for us a few examples of where you have said anything negative about NZ, it's rugby, its politics, its economy, it's wildlife or any of its people.

I've spoken to a great deal of people, including my partner's daughter who visited NZ recently and there was a common theme that seemed to arise from their trips.

The majority of them said that it's a beautiful country and that they had a good time DESPITE being told by almost every local they spoke to about how wonderful NZ was, multiple times.

Nobody is saying that one should not love your country, stand up for your country, be willing to defend your country with your last breath or even partake in the unsolicited promotion of your land. Of course you should. It's natural to be proud of where you're from, to want to defend it and talk about it.

But here's the thing...

Cricket is the second biggest sport in NZ right? Don't most kids play it during the summer?

Why is there never a peep about it on the cricket part of this board? Why, as Mike mentioned, have no Kiwi poster made any contributions regarding sevens rugby until now?

If you enjoy rugby then sevens is the T20 version of it and despite it not being anyone's favorite version, surely you'd still make the odd post about it. Right? Especially in NZ where rugby is in the blood.

All we hear about here is the positives and the wins. Never any discussion on the negatives of NZ sport. Never any discourse when the national team in any sport is doing poorly.

I'm not saying that you should cry into your beer like us Saffas do all to often. But for the love of all that is holy can we just once in a while be real and break through the perfect facade that you guys seem adamant to promote? You, like us, are not perfect, neither is your country, so can we just come at things as imperfect equals from time to time?

Lets hear about why your cricket team is struggling. Lets discuss why despite being the present masters of the 15 man game, your sevens team has not been so hot for some years.

Any Saffa poster here, Beeno included, and i'm not defending him outright but the truth is that he is capable and more than willing to discuss the difficulties, issues and mistakes in South African sport and its society. You'll actually struggle to get him to shut up about it.

The most we get is self-praise disguised as a concession.

Any example of this would be Cloudy saying something along the lines of "We don't generally do well at the games, because we are a small country but we punch well above our weight.

I'm sure most of us have met that person in the office, at the gym or somewhere else, who just has the perfect life, wife, house and cleverest children you can imagine. The last time he had the flu was in 1985 and he still weighs the same as he did when he was 16. He never drives a car past 50 000kms and gave half his liver to a random stranger on whim. His parents wanted to call him Jesus, but it didn't quite do him justice, so they settled on John.

How enjoyable is the time one normally spends with that guy? Not much at all because he is constantly inferring that he is just better than you in every way possible.

Lets try an experiment...

Saffa posters on here, myself included, often accuse NZ teams and refs of cheating, when most of the time these claims are unfounded. We are also often rude, insensitive and unappreciative of the Kiwi "contributions" to the board. See, i just did it there via my clever use of inverted commas. It's probably pretty obvious that this negatively affects the site and scares posters off.

We also fight amongst ourselves...often, very often.

Many people think of South Africans as being rude, arrogant, under-educatued and often times that we have an unjustified swagger about us that is off putting. Guess what, it's very often true. Half the people i know fit into at least one, if not all of those categories. Not only that but many of us are racists too, on both sides of the fence. Imagine that!

You don't even need to go into the records because on the main page here you will find threads where we openly talk about the negative things about our rugby, people and country.

At the same time that we celebrate our wins we'll bemoan our losses, often times blaming the ref or the cheating kiwis.

So now i ask you, why is there never a negative word about anything NZ from the mouth of a Kiwi on here?

See, i listed some of the negatives about Saffa posters and i did so easily without feeling like i was betraying anyone or my country. Despite my truly unpatriotic lamenting of my countrymen, there will be no witch hunt. Why? I don't know. But i think in part because many know it's true and also because we don't see critical self-reflection as national betrayal.

Are you guys able to do the same? It really doesn't seem like it. And i'm not picking on NZ. It's just that i've never encountered a nation so unable to criticize themselves.

It's a serious question.

And it just seems counter productive because it's like the more you pro mote your own perfection the more incentive people have to try and drag you down.

But i'll make a prediction here.

Instead of admitting that your patriotism is a bit overboard, you'll attack this post, make fun of it and ultimately dismiss it out of hand without actually answering the very simple question that i have asked, albeit in a rather roundabout way.

I eagerly await that the deafening sounds of crickets that is surely to follow.

Despite my sarcasm i am actually interested to know what the Kiwis think.

Look, if the worst thing someone is accusing you of is being overly patriotic, and you take that as an insult, then you really are overly patriotic.

Ultimately, i think that if you never critically evaluate yourself, then it shouldn't surprise you when others do it for you.

Fuck it, maybe NZ is perfect.

Plum, I think you’ll find that no Kiwi would try to push the country’s “beauty” down any visitor’s throat. They are probably only agreeing with a visitor’s comment. Do you really think we go around saying “Hi, my name is Bob, isn’t our country beautiful?” We don’t bring up politics or the economy as our country sails along quite nicely (and I’m not skiting) and after all this is a sports site. Your politics and economy are brought up continually here by plonkers like Hasbeeno purely as an excuse for your underperforming Boks. Our cricket team is not top drawer; we can’t be good at everything...

...Plum i think it's fairly self explanatory why Kiwis don't air their dirty laundry in public, yr a clever chap....sitting around gossiping like little old ladies not very staunch either tbh...you'll find most Kiwis are very quiet, in the war the NZers were known as the silent division so not renown for their communication skills perhaps albeit they were elite troops....and doubt whether cricket is our second most played sport - mostly soccer players and indians that play it i think and this being a rugby forum might explain the interest in that...and as for South Africans in your words being more negative i'm not sure that's something we particularly want to aspire to be like ...insert yr own quo te about the benefits of positivity here...

Nice try Plum. I find similar levels of confidence in Oz and the USA, nations for whom all wars in the last hundred years have been foreign wars. There is a spiritual awakening and self awareness that comes with change.

Fortunately Beeno pops their oversized bubbles regularly and helps them avoid institutionalization!!

Pretty much......countries that have lost wars, been occupied, or experienced societal upheaval like SouthAfrica have been exposed to different views. Oz, NZ or the USA haven't gone through that in recent history. That kind of experience adds a little maturity.....perhaps even a little humility.

Brycy you cannot keep your dirty laundry indoors for too long. Soon the whole house will stink

Despite the tone of the post, I'm not trying to make an accusation but rather trying to have a discussion.

Not that you'd want to but I'd be happy to discuss all the negatives of SA sport and as well as other facets of the country. It doesn't phase me, or any other Saffas here.

Moz, I wouldn't call it confidence. Confidence isn't afraid of the mirror.

Insecurity on the other hand only ever presents its best side to the world. Like the girl who does her hair before going to bed, just in case something happens in the night and heaven forbid an emergency worker sees her as she really is.

Cumon Brycy, share with us what dark secrets lurk on your island.

Well Moz, I have a somewhat different take. I'm not sure whether it's enough to form an opinion but I've travelled with a bus load of Americans on three separate occasions and I've been to NZ twice and have interacted with Kiwis in the workplace. Obviously I'm more qualified to speak about Ozzies because I've lived amongst them for several years. South Africans??...I guess it all depends on which ethnic group you're thinking of, there is a distinct difference.

I'll buy that one...... the point Plum is trying to make. But there's more, few if any will admit that Houston we have a problem.

".......it seems to me there are good people everywhere"

...plum you seem to suggest Kiwis should be less than happy with the state of our sport, politics and 'rock star' economy...and that we should be complaining about everything under the sun the way South Africans do...and you also seem to struggle with our positive mindset when you lot would rather focus on the negatives ...so maybe we are complete polar opposites...but we do have it pretty good here in NZ and so are very lucky....

" But i'll make a prediction here.

Plum, it is a roundabout way...you strike me as intelligent guy with an enquiring mind and that's good but your questioning is too subtle for some to grasp.

Kiwis are indeed nice people and appear to the insecure Saffa (yes a lot of us are because of our unsettling past, present and future...it's only natural) as arrogant but they are not by and large and it really has nothing to do with the cricket question at all...the NZ posters here might have only a very slight interest in cricket and some might not have any interest at all...that's why they don't post on the cricket section.

I don't often see eye to eye with  Moz but he has hit hit the nail on it's head and what they said I veto absolutely.

"Den having lived in RSA, England, Greece and the UK and having spent considerable time in Oz, Germany, Italy and even Venezuela.......... it seems to me there are good people everywhere, but actually no truly rational and open culture. They are all flawed. I mean take the UK, lots of good things there, but imagine Charles as your future leader....the monarchy is an outdated institution".

It really boils down to understanding people and their history, traditions and values and what makes them tick...travelling to foreign lands is a good eye-opener and the best educator of all...Saffas are very insular...only the affluent can travel...

Cloudy, thanks for that...and I kinda agree about Plums question...it went on for a bit too long, so it's difficult to give a pinpoint answer.

Moz has a bit of a point with the fact that there were no major upheavals in your country for quite some time and that life has been good for some time now. It seems peace and prosperity have a positive effect on society, but also makes one complacent in a way.

On the other hand, South Africans went through upheavals forever.

First the tribal wars, then the locals clashed with the European setlers. The Duch and English took turns at ruling the country...the Great Trek, further clashes with other locals. Drought, 2 wars with England, concentration camps, genocide, rebellion, 2 world wars, Appartheid, the Struggle, the end of Appartheid, a new struggle. Murder, violence.  We are a totally chaotic society and it seems like we've been like that for more than 360 years!!!  It is so intensely chaotic, it almost look orchestrated, so much chaos surely can't be mere chance? Will we ever find peace?

Why are there Still people left in the country? How can those remaining still have hope for a better future? There is always hope.

Dear Cloudy, I did not say that travel is the only tool to education about other cultures and what happens there...I said it is an eye opener.

By that I mean that it invariably changes your views, more often than not. Yes reading and study does give a grounding but there is a lot of bias in what you read...often than not it's contaminated with prejudice...even history books can be flawed and most certainly media reporting is flawed and to base opinions without experience and observation is foolish.

First up we have had war on our own soil ,against the English same as you guys.I concur with my fellow Kiwis and as far as I can tell Plum is a bit pissed off at what he sees as chest beating on our part but fuck that for a laugh I am not about to piss and moan about our sport or our country just to mollify someone thanks very much .Besides as Rooie once pointed out considering our rugby teams success we have been quite restrained ,one wonders what cc and beandick would make of a record like our boys .And as Cloudy has pointed out many of us commiserated with you guys especially on what must have been painful losses for a great rugby nation against the likes of Japan and Italy ,We take no joy in that but I guarantee your mates beandip and the other wanker would have their schadenfruede cup running over .I dont see you Plum having a go at those two with their constant racist attacks on our people country and sport although others have done so from time to time.

Besides seeing you guys moaning about your country and rugby is off putting and makes one inclined to go the other route eh ?

To cut to the chase sour grapes make a bitter harvest so nah stuff that.

Thanks for the discussion.

Appreciate all the comments.

I'll try to summarise the relevant theme that seems to be emerging.

It doesn't help to complain. We are positive people.

I understand full well that I'm accusing you of virtue signaling.

Though you could just as easily say that I'm doing the same thing.

What I did NOT accuse you of was behaving worse than us Saffas. Neither did I say that you've not ever shown empathy when our teams have done badly. So that falls into the irrelevant category as far as this discussion goes.

What I also never asked you to do was to put down your own country or its sport, or insult your countrymen...and women.

What I did ask was the the following...

When your teams have not won or have done badly, why is there never a discussion around why they lost or did badly?

I'm not saying that you should call for player's heads.

I'm not saying you should cry into your beer.

I'm NOT saying that you don't congratulate the other team, because more of than not most of you do!

I'm not saying kiwis are bad people. I think we need more people like you.

All I am asking is why you seem so unable to be critical about yourselves...IE your sport, or anything else even.

Again, being critical doesn't mean giving props to a team that won or sympathizing with a team that should have won.

So, the answer, as far as I can tell is that it is because you're positive people. And out of respect for players and sporting institutions.

Is it really that simple?

I'll explain again why I have asked this.

I'm on a multitude of forums interested in different topics.

This is the only forum that I'm on where a group so consistently fails to self evaluate objectively.

You may see it as an insult.

I can only offer my promise of honesty and say that it's not how its intended.

Was hoping that maybe somebody would open up a little more on the underlying culture if the country...IE patriotism in schools, how the media sell the rest of the world to NZ, your relationship with Australia and its effects on your national identity and whatever else you feel may contribute.

Again, without trying to insult those who did respond, your answers only scratched the surface.

You can't know or truly appreciate someone if you're entirely unaware of their flaws.

I can go onto various friend list right now and ask people from every continent what is wrong with their favorite national sports team. I'll get honest, though not necessarily correct answers. But I'll get answers and from Europe to the US, to Brazil or Russia people are happy to discuss things without feeling like they're betraying their country.

So as far as I'm concerned, the NZ brand of patriotism is an anomaly.

Many other people think so too.

Why?

Plum I believe most of us did not really understand the gist of your question...as I said it was subtle and you presented in a round about way.

Most posters here are basically very simple and down to earth and perhaps get a little irked by questions they cannot really answer...be that as it may...I don't believe people in whatever nation they belong to are any different...they have the same human needs but express them in different ways and norms...it's just simple understanding ot them, that's all.

Clouds, from where in sitting, it seems that NZ bands together more than any nation. That's probably why the Allblacks are doing so well, despite the small population. You will rarely figh each other in front of outsiders.  It's a good thing. You lot band together like one big happy family.  It's unique to NZ, so don't take offence if someone of a device country finds it difficult to articulate it properly.

I think that travelling all over the world helps in opening our eyes to what people are really like.  I travelled widely over many years and will always remember my first trip to Europe which lased six months.

Incidentally there is one thing I regret - even though I went to Australia twice - I never visited New Zealand,

Now to get back to the people of countries.   As a child I was brought up to believe that the Russians were horrible people and the Hollywood movies added a lot to that feeling.   I was in primary school when the Hungarian revolt took place in 1956 - leading to increase of my dislike for all Russians,

However, for some reason or another I was asked what book price I want for being the top History pupil in the final year at school and I said I would like to get War and Peace of Tolstoy.  It turned out to be an amazing book giving me a completely different insight in Russian culture and the Russian people.   However, I still hated the Communist regime - they were really a terrible government to inflict cruelty on their own people.

Even though I tried to go to Russia in 1973 I could not get approval for such a trip and visited East Germany and Hungary.   Nothing I saw endeared me to Communist Russia = but my point of view as to the Russians I met in the two mentioned countries were very friendly and nice.

However. in 1992 I succeeded to get a visa to visit Russia - the economy of the country was bad - but I then met more and more Russians.   Despite the Communist repression they retained  much of their centuries old culture and if I compare them with other people I met traveling  to many countries I would say they are more friendly than people I met in other countries.

So what does the above tell you about people - that is never to get perceived prejudice.   I think the culture that developed amongst South Africans are very different from what is found elsewhere in the world.   We had our own disgusting regime for near to 50 years and that made many people being unfamiliar with other groups, tribes and races in the country and that leads to diversity in views on all issues.

That is why you would always find a degree of self-criticism unmatched in any other country in the world.  That is why the sports teams are severe ly criticized and the selection of the teams are always under the microscope.   I have severely criticized SA sport and politics, but have never said I hated my country.   I love SA and will remember something I wrote years ago - I have always put my country before anything else in the world.

Paranoid much?

So I see you missed the part where I said that I'm not saying that you should put your country down...MULTIPLE TIMES.

Guess you also missed the many genuine compliments I paid you too.

I said "forums" btw, not social media. So I guess that also flew you by.

Are you intentionally talking all the way around the topic? Sure as hell looks like it.

It seems that you jumped straight to being offended, along with almost every other Kiwi aside from Brycy.

Look up here and see the various snide remarks that were thrown...as predicted.

Is it just me or is that a bit odd?

It comes across as being overly defensive and guarded which in itself speaks directly to the question that I am asking.

For people that are held in such high regard you really do seem to have a right hard time holding up a mirror to yourselves.

It IS weird!

Maybe it's a sore point for yas. Who knows?

Anyway, nice to know that you're completely unwilling to have a discussion on how you derive your sense of national pride, how it manifests in the world at large and how you're perceived by others. Even though I've told you that perception is largely positive ;)

Perception is not understanding because it's more often than not contaminated by bad and sinister hidden agendas and motives. Man can believe what he perceives but the real truth has to searched for with integrity, and honest motives.

The trouble is most people are easily swayed by others and it amazes me how some here on this forum seem to judge each other when they have never met them and don't have the foggiest clue about each other...but this can be really funny sometimes and entertaining...sometimes even the seriousness can be hilarious....Hahahahaha.
