So I have looked at our scrumhalves stocks to see which 9 should be on the bok radar. I've also included those who were in the squad this year.
To be honest, I think  if it wasn't for Covid we may have seen different 9s.
But I don't know why the coaching staff thinks its okay to bring in experienced players into the squad.
I have not seen Jaden player other than 3 games this year. He looks solid and a prospect but did he deserve a bok cap.
Ivan and Embrose had their chances but surely you would at least go for another 9 with experience like schreuder even though he doesn't set the world alight

Louis Schreuder is a good scrumhalf and many times overlooked. It is good that there is young players to obtain some valuable experience. But papier would not be 1 of my choices and hendricks I have not seen much of his rugby he looks quite standard.

Faf and Cobus are reaching the cut off age in international rugby so it is only fitting to groom new younger #9's.

Hershel and Jaden both have potential to take over the #9 jersey and have youth on their side and more than capable of filling the position when the called arises.

As for Grant Williams he has shown some class for the Sharks and I am sure that he will justify the confidence show in him by the selectors if handled correctly.

  1. Faf is a technically underdeveloped scrumhalf. His pass is poor, his kicking is inaccurate. He is all about pressure and disruption. When he was fit, he was effective in this regard. Looking back at 2018, he looks unfit and slower.
  2. Reinach, a player I have never rated, has actually been very solid this year. He started a little slow getting from ruck to ruck, but his passing was actually very good. Not perfect, but well above the other 9s on that list, and his kicking was on point. It's been a long while since I've seen a Bok 9 kick like that. His work around the fringes and defence were also strong. His attacking stats stand out from the rest.
  3. Jantjies is a man who can run fast. One of a long line of next gen scrumhalves with very ordinary to poor skills but who can run like a wing. These types never suit Bok rugby.
  4. Papier has never been good for the Boks.
  5. I've seen little of Jaden, but he falls into the wing-hybrid category. Which is fine, if the opposition are allowing you to run at them with free space.
  6. Ivan is the most fundamentally sound 9 on that list, this is a 9 you can build around tactically.
  7. I don't recall ever seeing Grant Williams.

Faf Jantjies Reinach Nohamba Papier v Zyl Shreuder Hendrikse vd Bergh Izak Burger Groom I have seen very little of Williams so can’t comment and Hendrikse looks a real class act but I’ve only seen a little of him so no doubt in time will jump that list Baby Bok James Hall of a few years ago was damn good as well, but he left our shores very early - not sure where he is now There was also a Mkhabele who played for the Sharks and Cheetahs I think who looked damn good - not sure where he disappeared to

I think our top 3 scrum halves will do the job until the next World  Cup. We already lost Faf a few times this season and we  managed to get through the games without him. So I won't say that we can't play without him.

Jantjies  was actually really poor  when came on and I know he struggled for form when playing for the Stormers, but he seems to be good as an impact player.

But I just saw that Micheal  Lynagh son was called up to the England squad but got drop. He is not a flyhalf but I like Eddies thinking here. Just said the kid need more first class games,  told him what to work on and looking forward to have him in the team. Love or  hate Eddie, he is bloody good  with backline  talent.

Not sure what our coaches can offer to our backline players.

Our  incumbent 3 players does a good job and can turn a game on its head, but I want consistency and agree that they First Class players and not world class.

Both Reinach and Faf crossed 30, still good enough in my book but only for a couple of seasons

I saw Lynagh’s boy playing at my sons school rugby festival a few years ago. Dad was there watching His boy was playing fullback at the time, I think he is being used on the wing these days Was a big chunky lad - he looked good but nothing special unlike Marcus Smith when he played the same festival a year or two before. The other kid that stood out was Gavin Hastings son who now plays for Scotland. He played 12 for Millfield school a few years in a row. He mostly plays 10 these days. Mom and dad were always at the festival supporting him
