Coach Rassie Erasmus has swiftly dismissed the swirling rumors of a crisis within the Springboks camp due to injuries, assuring fans that the situation is under control. From the heart of Cape Town, just days before the 2026 season kick-off, Erasmus addressed the media with a robust update on his squad's health.

While the injury list has made headlines, Erasmus confirmed that only two key players, RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith, are ruled out for the year. On a brighter note, Malcolm Marx and Eben Etzebeth are back in full swing.

"Eben will be ready, Malcolm is also ready,"

Erasmus confidently stated. He downplayed the severity of other injuries, noting they largely concern players who are either still adjusting to the team’s system or haven’t been regulars on the match-day roster.

The Bok coach brought further good news, revealing that scrumhalf Grant Williams is back from injury. Morné van den Berg, another scrumhalf, is also on the mend post-bicep surgery.

"Krappie will possibly be available by the time we play New Zealand [in August], or even Scotland and Wales [in July],"

said Erasmus, offering a hopeful outlook for the upcoming matches.

Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and utility back Ethan Hooker are on track for a return. "Sacha should be ready about four weeks before the New Zealand matches," Erasmus added, "Ethan is on a similar timeline." Concerns remain for Cobus Reinach, whose participation against England is uncertain. Erasmus expressed a desire not to rush his recovery, suggesting Reinach might only join post the three challenging matches against England, Wales, and Scotland.

Long-term injuries to props Frans Malherbe and Trevor Nyakane are still a concern, yet there's optimism they’ll return to play. The Boks had hopes for Lions utility forward Ruan Venter at lock, but a severe knee injury has sidelined him for the season, alongside veteran Deon Fourie.

Erasmus urged fans and critics alike not to fixate on the injury list. "I don’t want people to look at the list and think we’re in trouble, because that’s not the case," he asserted. The real challenge, according to the coach, is managing ample player availability to ensure everyone gets sufficient game time, a luxury problem indicating depth rather than despair.
