It'd be a shame to avoid Louw now that he ironed out those annoying yellow cards. I never rated him higher than Brussow, he never reached those heights, but he became a very significant player. My player of the World Cup alongside Schalk and Du Preez. However, forward prowess at the breakdown is one thing, but the backs play a part too. Failure to get over the gain line leaves the forwards playing on the back foot. We need some muscle in midfield. If only Damian could defend; would be my 13. 

Agreed. Remember 2008? Peter emphasised ball carrying, but we were cleaned up on the deck all year, aside from the England test. In 2009 he resisted Brussow. It was only at the insistence of Plumtree that Brussow was even in the squad. The rest is history. You can't play ball in hand rugby if you fail to secure clean, quick ball. 

We were cleaned up on the deck throughout the Meyer and Coetzee era.   You may choose the duds for Man of the series in the WC - but that does not make them such,  Louw had average games when Meyer was coach and was a dead loss in the test  teams he played against  under Coetzee.

Louw has developed the same problem as Alberts had -  too slow in pace and consequently too often late at  breakdown points with the result that if he then endeavor to recover the ball he is penalized.    The difference between him and Alberts is that the latter never ever was involved in ball protection and recovery and  Louw tried to - mostly unsuccessful.   

There is zero chance of the pace-deficient Louw being effective in the RC tests.        

Clever Mike, the Boks were very dominant at the breakdown under Meyer. In 2013 the Boks were extremely dominant, to the point of being unstoppable. In 2015 they beat the All Blacks at the breakdown in both tests that year. There was trouble on the 2014 EOYT, but I emphasize, the breakdown wasn't the key failing of the Meyer era. How do you not know these things Clever Mike? These have been well established facts for quite some time. 

Now, onto your assessment of Louw. Is he too slow? No. Economy of movement is more important than pace, and a pilfer specialist isn't going to target every ruck, or random rucks. There's a pattern to the game. The Boks under Jake were aware of these things, so would run at McCaw to take him out of subsequent phases. Key phases. McCaw wasn't fast either, but his efficient movement around the field meant he didn't have to be. This notion that a player must be fast so he can run all over the field is ridiculous. It reflects a shocking lack of interpretation of what happens on the field of play. Louw was the second best pilferer in the World Cup. So much for not being successful. 

Albert's was a massive presence at the breakdown. Once Alberts or Duane got over the ball nobody could dislodge them. It was a turnover. Louw, Alberts, Duane. That was a fearsome loose trio. Great ball carrying, defence, lineouts, ruck presence. Everything.

Why do you strain so hard to hate these players and coaches? You clearly have nothing but misguided feelings. 

Lurker - dream on.   The Bioks were never dominant at brealkdoiwn situations under Meyer.   Fact is their loosies  rarely got to such situations in SH games  at all because of pace deficiency.   Besides that -

*    Vermeulen was the only loosie who sometimes made turnovers;

*    Alberts never even knew what ball protection an d recovery meant - never ever making a possession turnover since 2012; and

*    Louw had more penalties awarded against him because he also arrived late and then try to make turnovers.

In the slow NH conditions Louw was slightly more successful - but Albers never achieved any improvement.    Before his injury in 2015 Vermeulen was acceptable in turnovers,    In the main fvourable conditions it is a fact that a backline player made more turnovers than two of the loosies.   

Alberts even when he got to breakdown situations - which was rare often enough did not even attempt to enter mauls situations and was more inclined to stand around  behind mauls hoping that he could get the ball for a run by him - where he was tackled virtually immediately.  

What you wrote is a serious distortion of what really happened on the ground - but that is normal with you.   Stop dreaming up things that never happened on the field of play.

Funny how Beast has been playing Super Rugby for the last umpteen years and has recently slotted 100 test matches to his name ... and yet has never been known for his ability to play to ground. Suddenly he's a star fetcher ... well according to SharkShit anyway. He can't even compete against the worst tighthead in South Africa but let's chalk him up as the go to loosehead. A must have. Coenie and his 150kg body weight is a good ball carrier. Who's going to stop a runaway doughnut at pace? It does however all come apart when he packs down on the tighthead side to scrum ... his primary function by the way ... cause that's when his large frame turns into a hinging door and one penalty follows another. That's if he's not retreating at the speed of light. Sooooooooo ... lets keep this superstar in the mix as well. He's a hell of a contributor. Haaaaaahahahahahahahaaa!!

Flo at the ripe old age of 33 was a relatively good blindside flank in his day. He does however have the tendency to confuse himself between his roles. How often have we not seen him playing like a blindside flank while wearing the 6 jersey. His performance against the Japanese is a prime example of why we should bring a specialist in at 6 and not a retreaded 7.

Kolisi should not be in the mix ... period. He is simply not a very good rugby player. I know he's a great guys but this is not a popularity contest. I thank the stars that he's not part of the Lions mix. Simply useless at anything above club level.

Vermeulen is a top class fetcher at 8 ... let's face it, he needed to be with the passenger Rassie selected at 6 ... the problem is his staying power. He burns hot for awhile and then fades away ... as we saw in the 2nd half against the Poms.

If you guys insist on keeping him then at least make sure he has a constant supply of energy drinks available. Other wise let's look for a younger option who can at least keep his pecker hard for the entire 80.

I remember how the Scots taught us the importance of the breakdown ... right here in our own back yard.

Beast is a 2nd rate scrumager ... at times gets a good little 5m run in ... and the rest of the match goes around praying for the final whistle.

As for hitting the ruck backwards ... well that's a bit of a stretch.

Rassie seems to be making a lot of silly decisions. His first was appointing Stick as his assistant ... then Kolisi as the starting 6 and captain ... drawing Flo in when we have so many better choices available ... and his latest is to hang on to the useless Jantjies and actually declare openly to the public that Jantjies is indeed a poor rugby player and in need of work.

I would have liked to see Jantjies' reaction when he heard that. Talk about being made a fool of.

Louw was, in fact, subbed in the 11th minute (corroborated by both ESPN and News24's match reports). A tackle every 3.6 minutes.

Kriel a tackle very 3.8 minutes.

An extremely silly comparison either way, but you just couldn't let the opportunity to lie go by. You could have checked your facts, but you didn't. Or perhaps you did and just decided to go with the lie anyway. That would be my call, in fact.

These aren't mistakes, it's deliberate. Mozart caught him again omitting details that would have disproved his argument about Super rugby defence (he omitted all missed tackles). He knows exactly what he is doing, and when caught accuses you of being a liar. It's amazing how he never ceases. If he can't admit he is wrong or apologise, the least you'd think he'd do is move onto something else. But no, he keeps going. Repeating his turgid lies ad infinitum. Here we have another embarrassment.

Lurker and Moz, with regards to Rassie, I think it is important to stay grounded at this point. The man is two from four as Bok coach. This 'he approved it so it must be right' attitude is not warranted at just yet. Before we can add such weight to his choices and his comments, he needs to prove himself. I am not against him, please don't misunderstand what I am saying, but he has two wins under his belt against a very iffy English outfit. That's it. I think that he has the potential to take the Boks to great heights, and I support him 100%, but lets not put the cart before the horse. 

I'm not really a Rassie fan. I think he is a gimmick coach until proven otherwise. He seems like a generator of interesting ideas that are best utilised under an actual head coach. However, Louw is a good selection. Unless proven otherwise, of course. I like the idea of Kwagga, but Louw is a proven entity at the highest levels of test rugby over a sustained period.
