Ref got the call wrong saying the Blues backed away from the line out but in fact they had one extra man in the line out and should have had a penalty for that anyway. Overall the Blues had some tough calls but they did not do enough to win the game. Huge effort and good stats but poor finishing. The article is good because it explains the rule related to the Blues tactic of not engaging the maul.

Interesting read and BTW, when it happened,  I thought the penalty was unfair, but IMO a maul was not formed due to the fact that the defending team did not bind with the maul, so thethe Blues should have kept their positions until the cheaters moved forward? I would like to look at it again. Interesting play of rules/laws. If it wasn't for this forum, I would have missed that...thanks JW.

The problem with backing away from the maul is that if the initial ball carrier keep the ball and not pass it back then the defending team is in real trouble.   I also was mystified by the ref ruling in the relevant regard - but it is very dangerous for a team to back away from the maul - it would inevitably lead to a try if the jumper just keep the ball and not pass it back.
