I saw him in the late 1970's as a player and he had the skills and physique skills making him one of the best loosies ever in the game. At my age one does not really realize how fast the years go by and I was somewhat surprised when seeing he died on Friday at the agee of 80 years.

Jan Boland after his university years became the Farm Manager of the wine farm Kanonkop owned by the the Minister Paul Saur - whose father-in-law was the last private owner of Groot Constantia, I was highly amused by an incident In the time I worked for the Department of F orestry where Saur was the Minister. I worked at the wood teatment plant in Bellville South at the time and went to teh annual forestry staff braai in 1963 at the Tokai plantation. Saur was Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs at the time and he and his wife turned up at th e braai as well/

He walked around amongst the people present and when he came to where a few of us were talking he asked me what I was drinking and my response was that as a salary earner - earning at the time just about R80 a month my -response was I was drinking Lieberstein - commonly called Vaaljapie by the coloreds. So to my surprise his response was that Liberstein is one of the best table wines produced in SA. Now that Mozart is one for you coming from a real expert. LOL

When Saur died his only daughter and Jan Boland Coetzee inherited the farm Kanonkop and in thr 1980's they parted company and Cetzee started his onn wine farm called on the farm Vriesenhof,
