The rolling maul of the Boks almost always wins a penalty from opposition infringement, after gaining territory.
Why not use it for every lineout, except in the Bok 22?
Currently, it is mostly used in the opposition 22 only- as a means to score a try.

It could be an easier way to dominate the territory battle instead of up and under's that are more 50/50. If the opposition is good under the high ball on the day , then just maul them into their own half to win kickable penalties, or set up another lineout drive.

This could also be combined with the 50/22 kick where the Boks win the throw-in to set up a drive.
Australia used the rule over the weekend, not sure if it (50/22) was by accident- or just well-executed. It was at a timely moment in the match and allowed them to gain some momentum with the territory.

Actually a pretty interesting idea. Perhaps it would finally get World Rugby to provide more latitude for defending the maul, which is virtually unstoppable.

The maul in open play by the Boks in the world cup final coordinated by Vermeulen could also be used again, especially as the opposition will try to minimize lineouts against the Boks.

In the 2nd half, there were more lineouts and scrums and that allowed the Boks to take more control of the game through 1st phase exchanges.

It's bread and butter for these Aussie players(the high ball) especially with their Aussie R ules background.

Arial pin pong is it's nickname and they begin sometimes at age 5 twice a week.

Oh great, let's bore everyone to the max and employ rolling mauls at every lineout, closely followed by an "up and under"............

The other way of playing is to use your B-A-C-K-L-I-N-E!!!!!!

Dave Rennie is very smart, he knows how to find areas to exploit. Let’s be honest, there’s a lot of areas to work with. The main thing for the Wallabies is to keep the ball shifting, don’t get bogged down in set piece shootout. The Boks truly believe it’s not there fault they lost! Illegal scrums.. missed kicks. Own mistakes.. bla bla. The Wallabies have Smelt blood in the water. They need this win desperately, especially at Suncorp. The Boks haven’t won there in 8 years.

The Wallabies varied their play nicely. They had the entire Bok midfield collapse on defence, playing through and around us and kicked pretty well. Still work to be done but they are heading in the right direction.

Australia always lift their game when playing us, especially in Brisbane...they always play a smart game...they even surprise NZ every now and again.
