Posters are asking why players leave RSA. One need only look at Kockott. Ignored by the Bok system he now starts for France. He was subbed eventually against Scotland, but after a very competent display. No handling errors, passes that found their mark, swift clearance of the rucks....tactical kicks that put the receiver under pressure. So much crisper than the penalty kicks into touch, fumbles behind the ruck, head high passes and slow decision making we saw from Reinach and Hougaard.

Yet in the slanted SA system he was on the out and would never have been given a chance. Match winner Aplon was in the same boat for a different reason....as was van den Heever. The players sense a complex preference process combining race, province and even playing style. If they are on the wrong side of two of these variables they are smart to pack their bags.

In the meantime I wish Kockott was available for the RWC....a tough, honest player who will never let you down.

Yep and the reason Willemse has left......snubbed by Meyer at the expense of a 38 and 35 year old. No doubt Jacques du Plessis is leaving for the same reason......much like Kitshoff who should have had a Bok cap 2 years ago

Moz, Rory is a rare exception. Mostly players leave for the money. Town and country don't pay the bills. Cash in while you're ahead. Did you leave SA for any other reason than a better opportunity abroad? Dave, you?
I do agree that national colors would be a bit of a carrot to stay a bit longer, but we simply need to deal with the fact that we won't ever be able to compete seriously with the Euro, Pound or Yen. Make peace with it and move on. We are lucky that we still breed enough players to stay afloat in SR. NZ and Ozz are also feeling the effects and they are better off exchange rate wise.

I never left for money. I doubt my RSA/ USA lifestyles crossed before 15 years overseas, given how many free goods you get in a great place like CT. But I can understand totally that a young rugby player has to ring the cash register quickly.
Still it's  a shame we never put Rory in the understudy position by picking him last June. Technically he is light years ahead of Reinach and Hougaard....and a much better competitor than Pienaar.

Do you really know Kockott's history with the Sharks and why he left them to play for the Lions before departing for Castres.   From what I heard locally he was not really a team player and caused problems internally.   The Sharks did not give him a farewell party - neither did the Lions.
Maybe he grew up and is a different kettle of fish at present - the French probably
straihtened him out.
On the playing side - how many matches have you watched him playing recently?   Difficult to accept your garbled version of "technically he is light years ahead of Reinach and Hougaard" since 90% of your version is based on prejudice.

Not prejudice Mike....fact. Every one of Kockott's passes on Saturday was crisp. He never got charged.....he never kicked directly into touch....he never threw last second hospital passes. Reinach did all those things.

Perhaps he is a difficult character, but so what. Ronaldo is a very difficult character. This brothers linking arms singing from the same hymn book stuff is puerile....perhaps that's why the Sharks always seem to be having controversies with players and coaches.

I've seen Kockott throw plenty a hospital pass in crap conditions much like Hougaard did against Ireland.
Rory had a solid debut and is a good player but he did nothing special that's makes him any better than Hougaard or Reinach.

Seen from the left, seen from the right. Reinach and Hougaard are more dangerous ball in hand, but that's where it ends.

I am busy watching that game right now. First half just finished. Don't think that I agree that Kockott was just solid and nothing more. What caught my eye though, is the other Saffer, Scott Spedding. A big fullback, quite quick, good boot and not scared to join the line at pace. Solid on defence as well. Lopez doing well at 10 but Finn Russell is the better flyhalf of the first half.

I also looked at the game and find it assuming that you said that you do not agree that Kockott was just solid and nothing more.
His stats for the game were as follows:-
Kockott0/004/51/62310102/00/000/0
There was nothing in the game - or for that matter in the stats - that indicates an above-average performance.

I too regard Kockott as a class act. Better than any we have in the country.

As you all know, I've wanted him as our Bok 9 for quite some time.

Sadly that's not to be.

I agree with Mozart. He would never have been given a shot here so why not look for opportunities elsewhere.

Loyalty goes only so far.

So what if he's difficult. Learn to manage him properly and you'll get oodles out of him.

Its a sign of weakness if a coach cant manage a player that has a bit of a spark about him. You need characters in your side, not a bunch of characterless sheep

There we go again with the little string of stats.................... What about the rest of my comment or is that because you cannot find stats to argue.

Don't be daft - this thread deals with Rory Kockott and my response was on your comments on Kockott - not on Spedding, Lopez or Russell.
Fact is that you must also bear in mind the opposing team - Scotland is way down the ratings as a test playing team.   Yet France struggled against them and that also is a fact.
I have not said anything about the rest of your comments - since it is not appropriate to the topic of discussion under the present thread - look at the heading if you do not believe me.

Scotland might be down on the ratings but they have been in great form for some months now. They have a good solid pack of forwards, a great flyhalf in Finn Russel and Greig Laidlaw is not a useless scrum-half. They have always been good at the breakdown and their loose-forwards are not nothing to be ashamed of. They did not do too badly against the All Blacks recently, IIRC and bear in mind that this game was right in the French back yard. Nope. They gave the French a real run for their money.

PS. You love to stick to the topic when it suits you, don't you ?

Rory Kockott, was and still is one of the best no 9's in the world today ...yes full of spark and go and dynamite...nuggetty, quick and good delivery skills...tough and robust...yes a bit of an individual but does fit into a team with a strong coach and French rugby suits him and I'm very glad for him that he's been chosen to play for the Les Bleus...good on you Rory.

This was a big fish that we let slip through our fingers
