Guten Morgen meine Herren,
It is with great interest that I present Rucker' s very first group counseling session. These are tough times, and the isolation is causing strange maladies of the mind. The first item of the day is to recount positive attributes or positive contributions from players that one deems inadequate. Try and look at these players in a different way, exploring the possibilities that one might not have considered before.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Doktor Auge

Start the therapy on yourself - the result would be interesting since logic and rugby knowledge should be the basis for any scientific effort,

Liebe Damme Lügnerin,
Ich danke Ihren für Deiner aufrichtigen Worte. It is with great concern that I remind you to adhere to the instructions on your medication. Mixing clozapine and whiskey with your smarties will leave me with no alternative but to terminate your prescription and have you relocated to a safer living quarters under the watch of nurse Cloudy.

Unter Berücksichtigung,
Doktor Auge

Pet hate is a bit strong, I am actually quite emotionally detached from people I don't know in person.

Damian De Allende: Of all the Boks, past and present, I actually like Damian the person most of all. I know someone who has spoken with him, and I trust that person's impression implicitly! He is very good at making pilfers, whereas Andre is the better counter-rucker. He has worked in tandem very well with de Jongh in the past at pressuring the opposition on the ground. At his peak - 2015 - he was good at destabilizing weak shoulders in space. The Stormers had him come out from the back of a POD to get along the edge of the defence and that was effective. He was often the pocket runner in box formations.

Patrick Lambie: At fullback he was the most solid defensive 15 we had. He was positionally sound and his lack of physicality was much less exploitable. His tackling technique was more useful here. Despite his lack of range on his boot, he was a reliable exit point for relieving kicks, far more so than Kirchner. He was also very reliable under the high ball. I honestly cannot recall Lambie ever faltering under a high ball, ever. He was my pick for starting 15 in the 2015 semi against die Schwarzewelle. As it turned out, I was correct, and New Zealand peppered us with kicks, totally dominating territory. Morne on the bench and Lambie at 15 would have been the perfect insurance for when we need to make tactical adjustments. I believe we'd have won that game had we started with Lambie at 15 and made greater effort to nullify New Zealand's territorial game.

Peter-Steph du Toit: He has a lot of heart, and is passionate about the Boks. He tries hard and exerts himself without restraint. Sometimes that emotional context spills over and he makes mistakes by being over-zealous. As a lock he can be effective. He is built like a lock, and moves like a lock. So if I judge him as a lock, he is a good player. My answer to the Johann Muller role. He can is an effective counter-rucker.

I have spoken to various people - but not to specific players themselves and as to the assessment you wrote can confirm somethings you wrote and ad some more.

De Allende

He is a player that is a strong ball carrier in traffic and he is often fulfilling the role of forwards when the ball is passed to him directly and not to the flyhalf  when the Springboks are  under pressure and a better kicking position is required.   He is very sound in protecting the ball when tackled and getting it back to other players,  He is physically very strong, but is less pacey than ideal, but faster than most other inside centers in SA,

Lambie

Was a small player with the heart of a lion - that was perhaps why he was  injury-prone.

Du Toit

He is built like a lock with the pace of a loosie.   He has ball sense and ball skills and is always very near to where the ball is during games.  That is perhaps one of the main reasons why Erasmus asked that the Stormers use him as a loosie and he turned out to be very good,   His background was mixed - he played at lock for the Baby Boks in 2012 and in the final he played as the number 7 loosie and in fact did very well as a loosie,   However, after that he never played  as a loosie again until the Japan test in 2015 when just before starting time it became apparent that Alberts would not be able to play,  He was clearly out of sorts,  Another year break again before he played in the English test where he was out of position and Youngs scored two tries.   When Erasmus asked him to play at 7 he threw himself fully into the fray and reduced his weight from 120 kgs to 116 kgs, in an effort to increase his pace.   Playing at 7 Du Toit was very good in the  2019 season - much better than in 2018

So let me try:-

Matfield

His strong point always was line=outs where his lighter weight than normal made lifting in the line-out easier. I rate his line-out ability  Up to 2011 the lock combination of  Botha and Matfie,d Matfield worked very well  in Tight phases of the game -  Botha had the physical strength  and Matfied good pace and skill set,    .

A pity they did not use him as a No 7  loosie and not as a lock.   His physique was never that of a lock,    SA may have missed out on a star performer as a loosie in his case,

Unfortunately his return to play  rugby after his retirement damaged his reputation badly,
