As rugby beats what often seems an inexorable path towards being exclusively a game for the oversized, there is no more reassuring presence than Damian McKenzie.

With legs so thin they'd make perfect candles should he ever fall head first into a birthday cake, he often looks like he's been painted into Super Rugby by a surrealist hoping to be the next Salvador Dali.

Watching McKenzie play should be heart in mouth stuff - a fraught business of peering between the cracks in fingers which are welded to the eyes. It never works out like that, though.

Far from being nerve-wracking, watching McKenzie is one of the best treats Super Rugby has to offer. He's a player who restores faith that rugby can preserve its core principle of being a game for all shapes and sizes.

He's a player who is impossible not to find compelling. There are so many well put together specimens in Super Rugby who can thump and bump; run over and through, but the thrills they provide are cheap and instant.

McKenzie delivers a more sustainable and gratifying proposition because he plays on his wits - one wrong turn up a dead end and he'd be toast. Yet it never happens - each week he torments the opposition, his 80kg frame such a tempting target but no one, so far, has been able to land the knockout blow.

The Southland-born, Christchurch-educated player's courage knows no bounds. His energy, determination and sheer will to force himself into the game are qualities that few possess - certainly not in the same quantity.

And then there is his skill-set. It's a portfolio to admire. His pace is top notch, his footwork is up there with the likes of Ben Smith and Cory Jane and his goal-kicking is about as good as anyone else challenging for All Black selection. Then there is his general reading and decision-making - as instinctive and as effective as Israel Dagg's when the veteran fullback played without a care in the world.

Throw in his bravery and positional versatility and what McKenzie, 20, looks increasingly like is the perfect replacement for Colin Slade.

The All Blacks lost one plucky battler after the World Cup when Slade headed to France, but have potentially found another in McKenzie. The value of Slade was he elevated the benchmark for utility backs. Previously, versatile meant that someone was trusted to cover a few positions from the bench - come on and get by for 20 minutes or so. Slade was different: the All Black selectors had confidence to pick him to start at first-five, wing and fullback. He wasn't a get-by option - he was a genuine challenger for the No10 jersey and also wing and fullback.

McKenzie could be similar. He's been electric for the Chiefs at fullback, but he showed last year with Waikato that his natural place is first-five. That's where he feels most connected and best able to influence.

"The first thing that struck me was that he's a young man that loves what he is doing," says Waikato coach Sean Botherway who got to know McKenzie well in last year's ITM Cup.

"He just wants to get the ball in his hands and attack. He embraces what you want as a coach and what you want him to do, he listens and he learns. He's highly coachable. He's also highly skilled and has that attitude that he will work hard and do everything required to improve. He doesn't temper his game to his body shape and he fronted for us in the frontline of defence when he played at No10."

Botherway, like most astute observers, knows McKenzie is an All Black in the making. The only unknown is whether he'll make it to the national side this year or next.

The All Blacks found room in their World Cup squad for three first-fives last year. If Aaron Cruden hadn't been injured, they might have taken four.

That's the reality of the modern game - men wearing the No10 shirt are going to be physically hammered and with test coaches being notoriously twitchy, they like to have an extended list of options.

Cruden and Beauden Barrett will be All Black coach Steve Hansen's preferred options at first-five for the series against Wales in June. The tougher bit will be working out whether Lima Sopoaga and McKenzie can both be accommodated.

"My understanding is that the All Blacks are normally chosen in the last six weeks of Super Rugby," says Botherway. "Damian will be the first to admit that he'll need to maintain his form all the way through to July and the playoffs.

"He is an All Black in the making - no question. But it is whether it is going to be sooner or later."

Great so see such talent pushing to make the ABs. Imagine Milner-Scudder & D. McKenzie in the ABs along with B. Smith & other elusive backs - the small highly skilled players are back. There is always the question of durability, we will have to see how that goes.
PS the wee stormers backs should not be ruled out because of diminutive statue, as long as they have the speed / quickness & skills & have a few big blokes around them they should be fine.

I reckon its the smaller quicker guys that give the saffas the most problems ,they are used to handling big trundling lumps of meat !

I like McKenzie a lot - I think he has the X factor.   However, the question goes deeper than that and it affect McKenzie's position as well.
The issue is in fact who should be the future AB flyhalf?  *  Cruden's kicking at goal has gone pearshaped and he cannot be relied on for kicking at goal,
*  Barrett is kicking at goal at a success rate of 62% so he is in the same boat as Cruden.
*   From that perspective the only real option is Sopoaga
If it is not Sopoaga the only alternative would be to play McKenzie at full back and move Ben Smith to the wing.

Brycy is of course quite correct .Smith stays where he is Barrett as supersub and Damien wherever he feels most comfortable .Oh and keep Sopoaga in the picture too if possible .If Cruds p ulls his socks up and starts kicking the way we know he can then more to the good. The terrible dilemmas that ABs coaches face eh?

So because I raise a pertinent issue - our NZ friends go bananas.   I actually support Sopoaga as flyhalf - since both Cruden and Barrett are poor under pressure.  Besiides that their kicking at goal is a joke.   The question is in fact easy to answer - they are poor under pressure,
All three are a huge step downwards from Carter - but at least Sopoaga can kick at goal reliably. .

No Mikey we just cant see where Mckenzies goal kicking is issue ? Besides we will just have to stick with scoring tries then eh ? All those positions you postulate are viable but not necessarily the best use of these players talents .

I am just pushing people to think about the future and forget about the past.   Goal-kicking is important in rugby since it frequently makes the difference between winning or losing a game - especially in Tight games.
I do not have an issue with McKenzie's goal kicking - I merely think its an additional asset to his excellent performances.
As to Cruden and Barrett the following:-
*   The last game Cruden played against the Springboks as a flyhalf  he was subbed before halftime because he went to pieces.
*   Barrett was outstanding as a sub in one game against the Springboks - for the rest her was bog ordinary - eg in the Ellis Park test last year.
I do not think they are the answer to replace Carter - to my mind Sopoaga is the best replacement option.  If he is not - the AB's will have to find a position for McKenzie or accept that a very substantial number of tries will not be converted and penalty kicks at goal will also become a lottery.

...not so clevermike if a SA standoff had a 100% winning record from all the games he'd started for the Boks would you change him just for the hell of it..?...that's what yr suggesting we do...sounds abit dopey mate...

...yr obsessed with only a small part of Cruden's game ignoring the overall kicking, passing, running, offloading game not to mention decision making i.e leadership - steering the team around the park ,  winning percentage, etc...you need to look more holistically at his greater game I think..

..that said I don't think his kicking is too bad...he missed two difficult kicks from the sideline last week - so what, we still beat Argentina in Argentina - no mean feat...that team kicked the Springboks butt in Durban last year so maybe you should replace Pollard..haha

Mckenzie's size isn't a big deal imo, his defence is equally as good in most cases. The effort he made to bring down Nadolo earlier proves again that small players can tackle big players. It's not about the size and weight, It's about the effort and technique.

I very much admire the way Mckenzie has been playing, one of the most consistent performers in the comp and a proven match winner. Can he produce the same rugby in an all black jersey? Of course. He will be the man to fulfil the AB fullback spot in the future for sure. His play style is similar to that of Warrick Gelant, both young with potential to break through into the national team.

Mikey you just stick to selecting the Boks and we will let Hansen and company do what they know is best for the ABs ,or are you saying you know better than Hansen and the ABs selectors ?

Try again fat t!ts Tokkie

Hmmm ...doesnt Cruden have a 100% record Mikey ? The same guy who kicked the conversion against the Irish to keep a 100+year record and a 100% winning year intact ? Seems like someone who knows how to handle pressure to me !

36-10 looks like the Chiefs with Cruden playing are doing quite nicely thanks Mikey ,BTW how many S15 titles has your team won ? I know that the Chiefs won 2 with Crudens help ,plus he did quite alright for the ABs with that 100% winning record when DC was injured .Makes you look a wee bit silly Mikey !

Wee damian will become a smudge on the grass one fine day. The old dictum of you can run but cant hide applies to this wee man. Expect his form to decline over the years as he gets caught and hammered. Ditto wee milner spud.
I am sorry to burst the bubble of all the small oaks here but rugby is not a game really for small wee fellows.  Lets hope the wee abs dont agree with Beeno  - the one who knows.Lets see smith, cruden, skud and mckenzie in the wee abs small guys and watch what happens.
Will the kbbs listen to Beeno is the question. This idea that small is beautiful is very silly really.

pooooooooooooie the ab forards are pap and I cant think of anything that will change that. kiwis, to be fair are good at ballet. Hence their entrancement with carol jane skipping down the touchline etc. Also of great interest to kbbs are we crude stepping very daintilty to the left then to the right before getting pulverised and thereafter simply getting rid of the ball as quickly as he can.
Personally I prefer good, hard rugby  - leave ballet to the ballerinas I say. Net balling to the netballers etc.
Then layered on top of that we have the weekly episode of bent down under reffing. Lets hope this is eliminated in the near future. A years ban on the kiwis would probaly underline the message. BAn OZ for say 6 months to make them awre they are not appreciated.
The kbbs ballerinas have ruined what used to be a mans game!

Mikey do you now understand what wee Mr Mutley and I have been trying to tell you ? Our coaches dont pick people for being good at only one thing ,we want players who can do it all if needs be.Mikey for years you have been harping on about guys like wee Victor and Morne guys who are both excellent at line-outs and goal-kicking respectively and not so much for the rest of their game .And you then advocate that we pick someone purely for goal-kicking ?The ABs want players who are up-skilled in more than just their core tasks, like all those lumpen forwards who can scrummage and little else so beloved of the Poms ,Argies and Boks.
