Rugby World Cup: Argentina lock banned for eye gouge on Retallick; NZ Herald

Argentina's Mariano Galarza has been banned from the rest of the Rugby World Cup after being found guilty of eye gouging All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick in Sunday's pool C clash.

Galarza was found guilty of making "contact with the eye or eye area" of Retallick during the Pumas' 26-16 defeat by the world champion All Blacks at Wembley on Sunday.

The giant Argentine, 28, denied the charge. He did not get the maximum sentence because of his good disciplinary record up to now.

World Rugby ordered a clampdown on what it called "insidious" fouls around the eye area in 2009.

The ban extends past the World Cup and will stop Galarza playing for his English club side Gloucester until November 26.

Galarza has played 25 tests for Argentina and made three appearances at the last World Cup in New Zealand.

 Glad he was caught and punished.

 Is there any footage if the incident available? If it was really deliberate,  fine, but there are some emotional over reactions in some areas and blind eyes being turned in others.

It was when Retallick was standing up in the rolling maul and Galarza reached around and raked his eyes aftyer having a good dig first .All while Retallicks arms were still pinned  ,and here wa s me thinking the Argies had started to clean up their act .And the halfwit Galarza has left his team short a man for the rest of the tournament .

Kbbs please! To get to the bottom of this you would have to carefully role back through the footage to see what ou retardlick did Galarza. The guy has an exempelary record and so it is quite possibly that the sneaky retardlick got in a cheap shot?
When one gets to the root of matters you will most often find a kiwi at the bottom causing to these problems.

Why don't you, AT LEAST, see the footage before spreading your usually BS? Retallick did nothing and if you think otherwise show the proves, say in what minute he did something to Galarza,..... what a big mouth!

IMO a little bit harsh but they said they were going to be with this kind of things.

I am glad they are being tough on this & they must be satisfied with the evidence or they would not have given a sentence that takes him out of the RWC and beyond. All players will have noted this & hopefully it will rule out such behavior. 

 When a kbb like ab ass says it was abit harsh a travesty has usually occurrred!
Now the oak wants me to scroll through a game I have already deleted. Watching the abs play once in that game was quite enough - it lead to them being downgraded in the betting odds. See JW's post re France at cardiff etc.
