IRB Rankings Pre-WC

  1. Ireland (89.48)
  2. New Zealand (89.41)
  3. England (88.14)
  4. South Africa (87.35)
  5. Wales (87.33)
  6. Australia (84.06)
  7. Scotland (81.01)
  8. France (79.74)
  9. Fiji (77.43)
  10. Japan (76.70)

Who did the Boks defeat in 2019 who were inside the top 5? England and Wales. One of those sides were heavily depleted by injury, yet put up a brave enough fight to be one Louw turnover away from winning the game and reaching their first ever final. South Africa's opposition by ranking just before the WC, on the very eve of it.

  1. Australia (#6)
  2. Argentina (#11)
  3. Japan (#10)
  4. Italy (#14)
  5. Canada (#22)
  6. Namibia (#23)
  7. New Zealand (#2)
  8. England (#3)

A little over half of South Africa's defenders beaten, clean breaks etc were accumulated against lowly Canada. Double ranking points for teams well outside the top 5 of the game for all but one opponent that year.

So the question is this, where was the revolution? Japan gave a good account of themselves and made the Boks work for 45 minutes, but their obvious flaw was exploited. Wales were not at full strength. New Zealand made the Boks look very, very ordinary. So that leaves the big game against England, our best match-up of the lot.

Segue into 2021 where the Boks defeated a Lions side that was disappointing and an Argie side that failed to give the best account of themselves as they were blown off the park by the ref. Who have the Boks actually beaten? All games at home this year. Were the rugby remotely convincing, it'd be hard to argue that the Boks were simply worthy World champions, but the chest beating from certain corners demands closer inspection. Are the Boks setting their fans up for an anti-climax when they face a top tier foe, especially outside of South Africa?

Lets put it bluntly  the SA performance in the play-offs were a master class performance - especially in the final  won by the second highest winning score ever in a WC Final.    Put that against the 2007 final the  difference is stark - the 2007 Springboks were poor in ball-possession knocking on balls regularly - not competitive  at  breakdowns (especially being poor in ball possession and recovery    with some difficulty in scrumming  - while there backline defense left some question marls.    The Springboks played 15 man rugby of top quality hence against all play-off sides and that won the WC

Go and watch the two finals and see the total performance superiority of the 2019 Springboks.

The 2007 England side had the last formidable English pack. Apples to pips dear boy, apples to pips.

Dave

What else but lies do you expect from the  Kindergarten Imbecile?    In  the All blackk game SA did not look very ordinary at all - they were actually on par was it not for a missed  routine open-field tackle by Mostert - causing the latter to be  dropped from the Springbok starting line-up for the rest of the tournament.

In the 2007 WC South Africa looked insipid in the game against of all teams Tonga  for nearly 70 minutes of the game - they came very close to losing against Tonga. They were also sub-par in the  quarterfinal against Fiji in 2007.    They never played a single team above them in ranking in 2007 - but the idiot carries on about what happened in 2019.

The 2007 Boks faced teams that could hurt them. An English side with a powerful pack who grew as the competition progressed. A Samoan side with immense physicality and guile. A Tongan side who were one of the most physical teams in the competition. An in form and dangerous Puma side. Fiji were fantastic ball in hand and were physical enough to make it relevant in game. Fiji of 2007 were better than Japan of 2019. Tonga were better than all but two 2019 opponents. The 2007 England side were better equipt to challenge the Boks. Nope, the Boks had New Zealand and folded. They never looked like winning that game as New Zealand made them look like the one dimensional team that they really are. The Welsh test was criticised across the rugby World for being the most ugly test in world cup history. The only bright spot was England.

You are so easy Lügnerin. Now the question is this: Where is the Josè revolution? The Boks have gotten worse under him, markedly so. They beat England away in 2019. The rest of their truly significant results were against poor opposition in South Africa. Ugly wins in South Africa, and in 2021, Josè had deflected ref pressure by using the race card. Damaging the Boks and damaging the game. Ende.
