SA coaches need coaching

 clevermike, in my opinion what you are saying is only partially true.
There are different occasions for different approaches.
There is no wrong or right when it comes to how the flyhalf takes the ball.
Sometimes a standing approach gives his outside backs more room.
Sometimes an attacking approach scatters the opposing defense.

So yes and no is my response.

One would be very narrow minded to say either is wrong or right.
A good halfback should know which option is best to take at any given moment.

 Variation is the key for half backs. Duvenhage from WP had a box kick and a pass but never nipped around the breakdown or scrum. Easy to defend. Hougaard can't kick for shit and a slow pass. No worries for the defenders. We need nippy 9's and 10's with variation. We don't have a lot of them.

 PS. Ad a 8 with a good pass and vision to that.

Let me explain - believe me I agree with you.   There are various circumstances where flyhals as a rule should stand deep in the pocket and receive the ball while standing still - like for instance in defense - where a relieving kick is essential.   There are cases where the flyhalf should vary his play - but to have a fixed rulr - like they propagate is essentially stupid.

That summing up is 100% true.  That means  that the halfbacks need to be able to read games (have ball sense) and then generate plays accordingly.  That clls for variations in play by themselves in particular.   The flyhals that has ball sense are those that is crucified regularly on this site.
Spencer was a top flyhalf - really a class act - and he would know exactly where the problem lies and he is probably the only coach that would be able to correct if.

 Dave, having learnt what you know about Rugby in conservative South Africa, don't you believe you need as an aspiring coach to be coached as well? Or are you above being coached?
