Cape Town - American heavyweight boxer Chauncy Welliver has promised to be in shape for his clash with Sonny Bill Williams and is "1 000 percent" sure he will beat the All Blacks star.

Williams, 29, will make a long-awaited return to the ring against Welliver in Sydney on Saturday, January 31, ending a two-year absence since his controversial points win over South Africa’s Francois Botha.

Welliver, 31, has never looked in the best of shape and weighed 137kg for his last fight against Alexander Ustinov in Moscow last month, which he lost by unanimous decision.

But Welliver has promised to train hard for the fight against Williams.

When asked if he was confident of winning, he told Fightnews.com:

“1 000%. I’ve taken a few fights this past year with little to no training. I will give team SBW that, they had the honour to give me time to get ready. “

Welliver has 70 fights to his name, including 55 wins and shapes as a genuine test for Williams who is unbeaten after six fights.

A law should be passed banning out of shape and form sportsman like this guy from being allowed to steal fans money by pretending to be a boxer.

Have to agree with Dave's comment.
SBW should be ashamed to even consider climbing into the ring with such a guy.
But as we all know SBW follows the money.....that is if people are stupid enough to support such a circus act.

This guy could be more than sonny bill can handle. Why the oak boxes is silly. He cant fight and he could get badly hurt.Stick to rugby sbw and just hope Bissie or Duanne doesnt flatten you. With a legitimate tackle of course.

SBW uses boxing as a way to get in top shape for rugby. I must admit though that some of his opponents are a little on the chubby side

If it were in my hands I would ban boxing completely. Even in tring with headgear brain damage occurs. Waht pleasure there is in watching soe poor guy getting beaten to pulp is a mystery.
SBW you are a good rugby player leave it at that.

I used to enjoy boxing back when Ali was fighting but I lost interest when the had a championship belt for every day of the week. Then we gradually saw Ali lose his marbles - very sad & ironic that one of the fastest & articulate boxers ended up shuffling along & slurring  his words
