In a bombshell move that has rocked the world of rugby, New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has ousted Scott Robertson from his role as All Blacks head coach. This decision comes after a rigorous review of the team's performance, spearheaded by NZR chairman David Kirk. Despite being only halfway through his four-year term, Robertson's tenure has been abruptly cut short following the disappointing results of the 2025 season.

David Kirk, alongside former All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu and ex-high performance manager Don Tricker, conducted the review that ultimately led to Robertson's dismissal. With the Rugby World Cup 2027 looming, Kirk emphasized the necessity of this critical juncture. "The mid-point in the Rugby World Cup cycle is the right time to look at the All Blacks’ progress over the first two seasons," Kirk remarked, highlighting the importance of aligning team preparations with the forthcoming challenges in 2026 and the tournament in 2027.

"We’ve taken an extensive look at the team’s progress on and off the field and have subsequently had discussions with Scott on the way forward,"

Kirk said, confirming that the mutual decision was in the best interest of the team. Robertson's impressive track record with the Crusaders, where he clinched seven Super Rugby titles, made his appointment as head coach a celebrated move. His earlier career as a Crusader and New Zealand flanker also added to his deep ties with New Zealand rugby.

Kirk acknowledged Robertson's long-standing contribution, stating, "Scott has continued to put the All Blacks first, and we respect that he has done the hard but right thing in agreeing to depart. We wish him well for the future." Meanwhile, Robertson expressed his pride in the team's achievements under his leadership. "I am incredibly proud of what this team has achieved and of the progress we have made," he reflected. Robertson also highlighted the development of young players and the strengthening of the squad's depth during his tenure.

Following his reflection on the year-end review and feedback, Robertson affirmed his commitment to the team's success, "My priority has always been the success of the All Blacks, and after discussions with New Zealand Rugby, I believe it is in the best interests of the team for me to step aside." Consequently, he has agreed to end his contract early to allow a new coaching group to prepare for the next World Cup.

NZR is now set to kick off the recruitment process for a new head coach immediately and promises to update on the progress soon. The All Blacks' next challenge lies in the upcoming July Nations Championship matches on home soil against heavyweights France, Italy, and Ireland.
