The present selection scandals are not only of Meyer's making - it goes back for years. I can remember that the public present at the announcement of the 2003 WC squad boo-ed some players when their names were announced - a totally unpleasant situation - and MC had to speak strongly to the public about the booing as unacceptable conduct. Sure it is not nice to do that - the players are not to blame for being selected.
You will even now find that there are members on this site that comes up with the most ridiculous suggestions about team selections and mostly to support the crazy/ridiculous selections of Meyer. I can remember when Meyer was nearly in tears when h had to drop Morne Steyn in 2012, because the latter was sub-standard. In 2013 Morne was abck in - limitations galore, but he was back in. It took a disastrous performance by Morne in the Aussie test last year to finally get rid of him - yet he is still a hot pot favourite of the crazies on this site.
Meyer's main problem is his constant harkening back to the past and his selection of players he is familiar with in other words a jobs-for-pals process. That account for selection of the old, lame and useless like Gurthro Steenkamp, Morne Steyn, Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield. The first two could not make their French club starting line-ups - but was regarded by Meyer as suitable starters for the Springboks. I believe that Gurthro has been discarded - and to his credit Bakkies Botha admitted he is not competitive anymore and retired.
So we are stuck still with the physically-deficient Matfield - too weak to be competitive in the Tight 5 - with the ever-present threat of Morne Steyn still present. It is a known fact that SA coaches often shoot themselves in the foot with their selections - Meyer is just one of the worst of those.
