  • Durban - The Cell C Sharks have announced the signing of Waratahs loose-forward Jacques Potgieter on a two-year contract on Wednesday.

Potgieter is no stranger to the Sharks, having played his junior rugby in Durban.

Over the last few years he has made steady progress up the ranks with his sheer physical presence and explosiveness, which resulted in a Springbok call-up in 2012.

In 2014, he was instrumental in the Waratahs victorious Super Rugby campaign.

"Jacques is a great acquisition for the Sharks," said Sharks CEO John Smit in a statement when confirming Potgieter's signing.

"He has been hugely impressive for the Waratahs and will add significant value and depth to our loose trio.

"We look forward to welcoming him back to Durban."

Potgieter expressed his excitement at the move adding: "I am really looking forward to joining the Sharks.

"This is the place where I played all my junior rugby and where everything started for me.

"I have great memories of my time in Durban and I am keen to contribute to the team’s ambitions in 2016."

Jacques will officially join the Sharks in early 2016 for the Super Rugby tournament.

He picked up some sk ills at the Warratahs, although I am sure Gary Gold will have him back as a one dimensional ball carrier in no time

The dolt at it again.  Have you seen any matches in which Potgieter played for the Waratahs, dolt?  He was bloody good and picked up some skills that he would not have picked up in SA.

At least Potgieter is a good 7 - something that Alberts enver was.  He will show what can be done at 7 - the FATSO will be phased out.

Have you gone dotty again?  Last year Potgieter played at blindside flank for the Waratahs and when the issue of his selection came up it was as blindside flank.   This year Potgieter played a few games at lock - but in recent weeks he was back to the blindside flank position.
So what are you taking about - dim one?

Good buy - but what about other critical positions?  I think they are after Joe Pretorius - who can play at both flyhalf and full-back.  there is a rumour he may be off to the Sharks.
They need at least one good back-up wing.  Mvovo is fine and so is Sithole - for the rest they are thin.

They badly need two quality centers.  Jordaan would be back soon - but two quality centers are needed.
They need seriously one good lock and two good tight-heads.   But there is a rumour that Beast is going NH - they need another loosehead as well.

It must be said, the Sharks need to rather sign a new tighthead prop and a centre.

The geriatrics at lock needs replacements - Du Toit and Lewies are fine - but they need another back-up lock.
If Beast goes north - they need a loosehead and Jannie needs replacement as well.  Du Toit is fine - but they need another two props as well.
I really have no trust in Esterhuysen and Steyn - so two centers are required - not one.

    P!ss off.
I do not see anything wrong with any margins when I view the threads. I am not going to go out of my way for your convenience. I have not seen you b!tching like this when other posts stuffs up threads in total. Neither have I seen you rectifying issues when one of your posts stuffs up a thread.
Oh and don't even think about asking me for proof of that because I am not going to bend over backwards for that either, reason being that you are such a lowlife that you would never concede when you were in the wrong. You always choose to sneak away with your leg between your tails.

Potgieter is the same player he was before he left. He won't be any improvement over the guys they already had. He simply added the much needed grunt to feed their attacking game. If Gold expects him to added finesse then he is in for a rude awakening!

Please go to the start of the thread and see whether part of the initial postings are not covered by the adverts.   If it is - know that the reason for that is the way Ceradyne quote previous messages.  He alone is responsible for that disruption of the threads of most members.

Everytime that I notice that a post of mine has stuffed up the margins I immediately rectify it. You don't even know it. For instance, I have recently noticed that there are certain images that I cannot post unless I adjust the picture size. I do that immediately. I am not going to jump through hoops for your convenience ars-ehole. When ever I do get a topic (by someone else) that is hidden behind an ad, I do not start p!ssing like a two year old. I just quickly copy that particular part of text and paste it on a note in Notepad, read it, and then delete the not. That is much easier than slitting my wrists and cause a hell of an argument on the board.
Now get back to my initial advice and p!ss off.

Why was this thread  not stuffed up before you make your quotes then?   It was perfectly in the margins without the initial posts running over under the adverts.  Your method of quoting will disrupt the thread from top to bottom.  I am making a reasonable request and hope you will help everyone out by being reasonable.

Mark my words, he will be another Deysel when he returns. No doubt it will be the coaches fault because Pottie was the shizznit Down-under. If only you knew how he used by Cheika. He is stationed wide in a wide attack pattern. They have their flank near the sidelines. They need physicality to make those patterns work. It doesn't function as it does because he is a skilled Aussie. He does what Australians typically can't do, which balances out the Tah's game.

No he was not better. His skills are no different. He was selected to add physicality, you may have missed the season long coverage of that by all Aussie media outlets. He was also implemented in a completely different gameplan. It's like how Jantjies looked far worse at the Stormers, but is a much improved player for the Lions. The Lions didn't make him better, they utilized him differently. He was the same player before and after. Same case with Potgieter. You saw the attacking play of the Waratahs and deemed it the result of Potgieter pulling all the strings. Not even remotely accurate.

Letstat is right about Potgieter. The 'Tah coach has given him a set role to play, watch him, most of what he does is to be the first hard hit in the tackle......Jacques does it to perfection.

Well Vlag, I don't mind being relegated specially coming from some of the clowns on here who don't know that they don't know....sjampies.. It's quite funny how some of them talk about backline play.....they even do it with authority.

With regard to Jaques Potgieter my thinking is that Michael Cheika did a great job in utilizing his physicality to the benefit of the team. Cheika realized what he had and used it in the best possible way....that's being smart.

I've yet to see a SAFFA coach doing likewise.

As an aside, on a rugby slot not dissimilar to Boots and All, Jacques was asked if he had learnt anything from playing for the 'Tahs...he replied saying his team mates told him not to die with the ball in the tackle. Hard to believe how a player can come through the ranks and not learn something that simple.

Dying with the ball too early can leave you vulnerable to the turnover. What some Aussies were doing against Wales in Ewan's last EOYT was throw the ball carrier behind them to ground and another player attacked the ball immediately, the Welsh had no response to this as their gameplan was to use those big runners to pound the Wallaby defence. So Australia says, "okay, we don't have the physicality to match that, so we'll give you that forward impetus but we'll have the ball thereafter".  Aussie ingenuity at it's finest.

It's funny though, because Australia know exactly how important these power players are to building the foundation to play more ball-in-hand rugby. I don't necessarily agree with all the elements of the Waratah's more lopsided approach - especially considering it's value at test level - but there was something to learn there. South Africans think you must abandon everything you are doing and shift to the opposite extreme. So they say we must get rid of "dinosaur rugby" and just throw the ball around, and worse, without any structure or planning!

There is no such things as a perfect 8 or 9 or 6...in rugby. Every player is unique and have strengths and weaknesses.  It is the job of the coach to identify these and improve the player, right? That is not what is happening in practice.  Players are molded into ideas of how they should play, but in the process some of their weaknesses are improved and some of their strong points improved, but by enlarge some of their spark is removed in the process.  It would have been better to play around with combinations. The one player's weakness should be negated by another player playing next to him. The team should equel to more than the sum of the individials in the team. That is what makes rugby great, but sadly too much emphasis is placed on rigid structure. Structure is very importand, but it should not smother creative genius. Rugby is a flexible game, but sadly few coaches can implement flexibility in their structure.

He is injured as far as I know and has nit yet even played any rugby.   However, he would find it difficult with the Du Preez twins around to make the team - could maybe end up on the bench - probably as a lock - when eh returns to play for the Sharks.
