GARETH DUNCAN, reporting from Durban, says the Sharks’ powerful pack will be central in their expected victory over WP in Saturday’s Currie Cup final.

Sharks head coach John Plumtree made his intentions clear with the promotions of loosehead prop Beast Mtawarra, flank Willem Alberts and hooker Craig Burden this weekend. He aims to outmuscle the lighter and younger Province pack in the domestic showdown at Kings Park. (Not too sure they are lighter)

Plumtree’s decision not to promote in-form Baby Bok and Sharks U21 utility forward Pieter-Steph du Toit also reveals his plan for dominance up front. He’s opted for the heavier (?) and more robust Anton Bresler and Steven Sykes in the second row, with Jandre Marais providing lock cover on the bench.

Du Toit was touted as a solution to the Sharks’ lineout woes, which Province will target on Saturday. However, skipper Keegan Daniel revealed to me earlier in the week that they will be better prepared at the set pieces and have come up with tactics to defend against the well-drilled Province rolling maul.

These selections and Plumtree’s management of his returning Springboks will play a key part in their hopes of achieving ascendancy among the forwards, which was central in their 20-3 semi-final win over the Blue Bulls last weekend, especially on defence.

The Bulls had several trying-scoring opportunities from striking range during the second half, which would’ve brought them back into the contest. However, the hosts’ strong defence, especially at the breakdowns, was successful in keeping their opposition out and they achieved a comfortable win.

The key pack match-ups on Saturday will be between the tight fives and loose forwards.

The Sharks have a stronger tight five, which should see them dominate the scrums. Surely you’d expect their front row, which includes two experienced Springbok props in Jannie du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira, to have the advantage against a green Province front line (Scurra far too small to scrum which puts huge pressure on our two young props - a very worrying aspect for us!). Plumtree admitted that his team should have the upper hand in this facet of play.

However, WP forwards coach Matt Proudfoot is confident his young bucks can do the job: ‘I think we’ve scrummed generally well this season. [Props] Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe have developed really well during the year. If they play to their potential, they’ll do well against the Sharks.’(Not without Liebenberg  - if they hold their own they will have done exceptionally well) )

WP also have experienced front-rowers in Deon Carstens and Brok Harris on the bench, and they’ll be expected to strengthen the scrum efforts in the second half.

The loose forward battle will be a potential match-leveller.

While the Sharks have a stronger loose trio combination (What nonsense!!!, the poaching capabilities of WP duo Duane Vermeulen and Deon Fourie (who’s been in great domestic form) will pose a threat. (Vermulen and Fourie are better than their sharks counterparts and our number 7 Don Armand has been playing prettty effectively and is a good size to boot. I have no worries about our loose trio)

Daniel believes his team will have to nullify this: ‘Deon has been in great from. He’s a strong ball-carrier and we’ve seen how effective he is on the ground. Duane has also done well this year. We just have to play to our strengths and keep our focus. The performance of the forwards up front will be crucial in who wins the Currie Cup final.’

However, Fourie has proven to be a hot-head this season. He’s been involved in several off-the-ball spats and has shown ill-discipline, even as captain. Head coach Allister Coetzee will need to restrict his aggression.

Province are without key heavies in hooker Tiaan Liebenberg and lock Andries Bekker, who picked up injuries in the final league game a fortnight ago. Their absence will be telling as I don’t think Scarra Ntubeni (despite his impressive form) and De Kock Steenkamp have the abilities to fill in effectively. Liebenberg’s power up front and Bekker’s lineout strengths will be missed. (Have to agree)

A full-strength WP team would’ve been competitive against the Sharks in this weekend’s final. But the Cape side have lost too much firepower, especially among the forwards.

Sorry but lets get real - a full strentgh WP bakc tha tincluded, Liebenberg, Bekker, Elstadt an dBurger would b esignificantly better than this sharks pack!!!!! Add in the likes andJean and Taute plus a far better bench if we had no injuries and there would be very little chance the sharks could win. No at full strength the best team is without dounbt the Mighty WP/Stormers.

Beeno striving to keep things real in a sea of hallucinations and fantasy!

One other thing Mike - I hear that Allende is ver ygood on defence and we also know Juan De Jong defends well. hababa will mark JP and van der Heever will take care of Mvovo. Groom has also shown he can defend well. So tries may not be as easy to come by as you anticipate. Also we have a very mobile pack.

Stay humble sharkies as this could just come back to bite you - especially that notorious guppie blowhard Mike who thinks the sharks will run riot - it beng  a no contest and all.!!  Pride cometh before a fall Mike! Hahahahahaha

the 2 packs are in my view the same but the major difference is that the WP uses there pack as there primary weapon where as the sharks has more weapons in there armory. the backs and in terms of tactics that is where the game will be won and lost.

the sharks to build a very early lead the young de allende to have a rude awakeing to CC final rugby and sharks to take it by 15+ as mike has predicted. mike has been nostradamus like in his game score reviews and i predict him to continue in that rich vain of form....the sharks will move it around away from the contact area to try and exploit the wp midfield. if they play it up close and slow the pace down they will make he wp think they are in the game.

Bwahahahahahhahaha muncher you keep me in stiches. Fourie has been the best 6 in the country this season. He has looked better than than Marcell when evaluated at a simliar level of competition. I see no advatage to the sharks at 6 and I expect Deon to poach more than Marcell. Deon also drives the ball up better and looks to be quicker around the park.

Vermulen trumps wee daniel and Armand will give Alberts a good go as he is a big oke and also a bit more mobile than Alberts.

No mucher your idea of the sharkie loose trio thumping the WP loose trio is not on.  Will we see wee daniel disappearing as he so often does when the forward battle heats up and the big boys get stuck in. A reason he has never shaped for the Boks or when playing top sides?

Just be very, very thankful WP are missing, Liebenberg, Bekker, Elstadt, Burger and Jean or else you could simply just hand the trophy to WP and stop the slaughter - bwahahahahhahahahaAmn that is a pack few if any side in the world could match never mind the sharkies!!!

Reality muncher reality has to be your key focus. I fear Mike has been carried away with emotionalism.

My dear muncher how many time have you seen a full strength WP/Stormers pack- that has beena real problem a snoted by so many commentators. I posted waht plumtree said when he on a rar eoccassion felt the full force of that pack.

Secondly i have long admitted that our attack has been woeful. However good work has been done in this aspect. yes sharkies are favourites du to injuries but dont write us off.

You dismiss our backs too easily but to me they are not too bad and may surprise. Groom, Cat, Habana, De Jong, Allende, van der Heever and Aplon. Nothing to look down on as much as you lot have been doing.

Anyhow I am looking forward to ts one muncher an dtrus tyou wil lenjoy the game too along with all the guppies. I hope the weather doesnt spoil the spectacle and that the cheap skate sharkie fans make it to the ground - I believe the ticket prices are exhorbitant - but then WP are a huge attraction!! Hahahhahaha

Go WP!!.

you see that is the thing sharks fans wont pay 350 bucks for a team like WP......nobody wants to see the WP roid rangers/thugs try to bash and tackle/kick for 80 min long....its more entertainment watching 2 dogs getting it on for 80 min. we all know the sharks will try to play some rugby but the same cant be said for the roid boys....

yes beeno your backs look great on paper but the game is played on grass and its that transition that seems to be a bridge to far. maybe sharks management should try to swop the grass at kings park to paper maybe then the game will be more entertainment

Why wouldnt the Sharks xpect to anal-gape the pathetic WP forwards yet again?

The Sharks pack in the final is not much different to the same Sharks packs that gave the Stormers prison-style manshamings in the S15 semi-final and the 2 CC meetings this year.

hahahahaha prison style manshamings hahahahahaha

great point but i expect the WP forwards to come with there roid ranger mentality. WP forwards are never clean players so i expect a lot of niggle in a game and polsmoor fisting competition style tactics from the "men in blue and white"

the sharks can destroy them upfront but i was just trying to be civil about the whole matter...we all know old beeno is very sensitive about these types of matters

I'm gonna LMAO if the Sharkies manage to loose this one. The egg will be flying all over the place. It seems all Shark fans seems to thing the Sharks will only need to pitch for the game to take the cup home and then they have the audacity to call the WP supporters windgat? This is a win win situation for WP fans, if we loose, it will be against the overwhelming favorites, and if we are victorious, well, that would be an enormous bonus. GO MY WP BOYS, STICK IT TO THEM. Either way you make us proud!
