As I have always said, there are no issues with Coenie playing tighthead. He once again proved his detractors don't have a bloody clue what they are talking about. He was better than the much vaunted Redelinghuis who replaced him.

Snapster Coenie's scrumming was a bit better but was he scrumming in at times. A better performanxe today doesnt mean he hasnt been scumming badly. Lets hope he continues to improve.Redlinghuys hardly had a chance but seemed oaky to me!
The guys who must go are Guthro, matfiled, Bakkies (has retired), Oupa and in the back JP is of grave concern. He offers zip on attack.I would like Allende to get a run.
Goosen showed a bit at fullback. He was however too passive. Perhaps Willie can help him. He is a skillful players and needs to find ways of joining the line and creating.
The guys I would most to have seen play are Kriel, fastest loosie in world rugby I would think, and Willemse. Willemse appears so suited to NH conditions and opposition packs. What a huge blunder to leave him at home and select wee matfiled and the retiring Bakkies!!

Coenie is angled in....a penalty waiting to happen. Nyakane was fine so why are these our scrumming stats?
8 won, 0 lost (100.0%)Scrums on own feed7 won, 2 lost (77.8%)

Italy is the team on the left.

He scrummed in once and got pinged....my point was more that he is not the liability at 3 that most have him down as.
Coenie ' s biggest enemy are the coaches who keep moving him between positions. Leave him at 3 where he has the security of the full bind to keep him from trying to rely on sheer strength and scrum through his opponent.

Ah bullshit, he scrummed in ONCE - fact is you were yet again embarrassed by Coenie as your wisdom told us Coenie was a liability at 3....guess that did not work out for you then?
Good on Coenie for proving you muppets wrong.
Actually one of those scrum losses should have gone against Italy as Nkanyane was pinged but in fact it was Castro who was forced up by Trevor.....poor call by ref.
It should have been one scrum loss each

Yes, I will admit that it went a lot better than I expected, but caution must be employed here, Jerome Garces allowed a lot of issues slip in this match.

If you look at Coenie's setup, he was scrumming in most of the match, and an astute or pedantic referee like Walsh as an example will blow him out of the game.

It is something he has to work on.

He has to set up like that to survive. He did exactly the same against France last year. Already angled like that a power house like Ayerza would simply have cracked him inwards....it's not going to work.

Agree the ref got that one wrong. In fact the big discussion afterwards with Naas and mallet was how poorly the ref policed the breakdowns.Mallet said that his nine years coaching in France and Italy taught him the refs always heavily favour the home team. He reckons its worth about 230 points to italy when they paly at home.To over come this bias one needs to play wider.
Nynakane did well agaisnt the ageing Castro. What this means is not certain. he palys reasonably outside the scrums but is he top drawer or better than Schalk van der merwe etc. Remember the Lions scrum has beaten up allcomers. They also play a very fast temo game so their props have to keep up with that. Not just strong in scrums.

The muppets are smarting.......Coenie proved you wrong. ....game set and match.
And to think he stood firm with Matfield as part of the engine room - makes it that much more impressive.  Same can be said of poor Nkanyane who had Matfield behind him.
Good one Coenie

Mozart does not beieve in facts - and one fact is cear - the scrums on Saturday was more stable than it was throughout all tests played this year - that is until Grthto turned up and bughgered up everything.     Whether Mozart and Letsal like it or not their doomsday prophesies did not mtrialize.
The problem in the Tight 5 was Matfield - the rest did fine.  He wa sloitering in the backline and managed to bugger up two promising backline attacking moves.   What a problem we have there.
Mafield was very active in the first two tests in June and from then has been on the backburner - getting worse in every test.   Because he loiters around near the maul - his tackling stats look better - bu the quality of tackles remains poor.  For the rest he handicpas t he forwards by not being part of the Tight 5.   If he had any gr unt oour scrumming problems could have been avoided.

"If he(Matfield) had any grunt our scrumming problems could have been avoided" says the OOm. Hmmm, now our only significant issues were against the Bargies. Victor should have provided more grunt....but wait....that  was Lood de Jäger.
Honestly debating primary school kids would be more challenging.

Coenie was under pressure in most scrums. The Bok scrum was easily dominated and it looked like things could get really embarrassing at any moment. If this is proving Coenie and scrum, who needs reality? Lets just make it up as we go along

There is one hige difference between De Jager and Matfuield - when De Jager made that tackle the man went backwards and t he Italians lost possession of the ball.  Matfield makes powder-puff tackles.   Comprehende?

Haaaaahahahahaa ... yes I agree ... he needs to shave that pathetic little thing off soonest.

Coenie showed once again that he's not a tighthead. In fact he showed once again that he's not a test prop.

He should do the right thing and retire from rugby altogether.

Redelinghuys should have come on within the first twenty.

Interesting that so many of the scrum "experts" on this board are the mincing little backs who never put their heads into a scrum in their lives.

I should probably say "alleged mincing little backs" because there are certain posters here . . . Moffie being a good example . . . who display no integrity, character or any attributes of rugby players at all and who have clearly never played a game of rugby in their lives, either as poncy little backs or proper rugby players (aka forwards). Funny to see these same shrieking little gurly-boys pontificating about what goes on in the middle of a test match scrum!

LMAO!

Coenie did just fine and his excellent general play warrants this tighthead experiment, especially when you consider how many quality looseheads we have compared to tightheads.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaahaaa!!!

Coenie is a failure at 1 and at 3. He showed this at Super Rugby level countless times over and to consider him a potential test tighthead because of general play is ludicrous.

He has had a few seasons already to master the art and let's face it, it's beyond him.

He is not test material.

I suppose we could use him at 3 if we're desperate enough but only against the likes of Georgia, Hungary and Greece.

Any better rugby nation would exploit his weakness and we'd end up playing with 14 men most of the match.

Well, it's not like he's just any old player with good general skills, he's a prop with 20 test caps. If his alleged weaknesses weren't exploited in those first 20 tests, what makes you so sure they'll be exploited in the future?

Sadly he has been exposed as a weak link, especially at 3.

How many of his 20 caps has he started at tighthead?

When he does come on it's for what ... 10 minutes? In other words he's had around 200 - 300 or so minutes of test rugby ... that's what ... maybe 4 full matches in total. That's a full 4 caps of test rugby in my opinion.

No-one has trusted him with the 3 jersey ... why??? ... not unless they felt they had no other option.

Your having me on ... aren't you?

Ifind this hilarious, we have scrumming issues before Matfield played test rugby, during his career and in the time he retired... but it's DEFINITELY all Matfield's fault.

CC you are speaking crap, Coenie was solid, in fact he was better than Redelinghuis, who in combination with Steenkmap, saw our scrumming struggle a little for the first time in the match.

I went and had a second look at the last 15 min or so........and in that time our scrum was not nearly as solid as when Coenie and Trevor were on board.

It was in those last 10 min that Lood impressed me with his two big hits and one big clear out and one outstanding line-out take under pressure close to our line.

So much for the young giant not being up to it.

Poor boy is an ugly pup and the more facial hair he has the better

The scrumming problem in the last 15 minutes was not so much R edelinhuys - as it was Fat Gurthro - with te pap Matfield behind him.   If you watch Matfields' performances you will notice that he he tires quickly and is as flat as a pancake by minute 70.  That is when he start losing or fumbling line-outs as well.

Shezza, scrumhalves are generally obnoxious little gobshites but they're definitely not the most limp-wristed of the backs . . . and at least they have a single digit number on their jersey.

There wasn't one scrum when Coenie was on where we took one step forward. We went back or collapsed for the first few. Then we went up. A stricter scrumming ref might have given at least two more penalties against our tighthead side.
Gurthro likewise was under the cosh....particularly against the Italian sub.

Our best scrumming prop was Nyakane, who actually did a better job against Castro than Ayerza did a week ago. He is an odd looking fella, butI have never seen him yield an inch. Redlinghuis was on the other side from the  cameras, but looked pretty solid.
