I think he would need to debulk a bit - drop to say 103 kg - JP's weight . Man he would surely have been an all time great. He is also able to step well and has a very good hand off. Running against backs he would have been awesome.

One gets the moer in thinking about what might have been. Here in SA wherever we find a big fast back we think we are brilliant in turning him into a forward!!!

Consider the following who may all have been top level backs - we tend to be shorter on backs than forwards - Brits, Deon Fourie, Spies, Burden, Kan Kan, Koster, Kolisi, Scurra, Daniel?  Who else.

We would no doubt have turned sbw (110kg) int o a number 8 etc!!!!

This is impressive for 108kg, his attributes could suit him well on the wing, much more preferable than Hougaard.

i agree beeno with the likes of vermeulen around i cant really see that spies can regain his 8th jumper. he tends to shy away from the hard grind up front but he has all the speed and skills in open space so he really has a backline player i really cant him in a 8th man role. as wing or even center he can really do some massive damage if used correctly i feel.

there is to much loose forwards and we need to really need to branch players out other roles. pierre's father was a world class winger really a great player on his day. big and fast much like pierre.

instead of working on speed training, he should work on finding his balls, what happened to the spies of 2009 who would plaster a nervous frown on my face??? then come 2010 i was again very worried about him, but after 2010 i was hoping the Boks would stick with him and his ineffective all roun rugby game.

theres no doubt that vermeulen is way better then spies, but the question that really needs to be answered is does meyer see it that way??? spies already has the bulls ace up his sleeve and as great as vermeulen was in the spXV, he hasnt dominated on that level in the Boks jeresey, he has been very good for the Boks, but he hasne been great and im sure there are a few others who could have given similar peformances given half the chance.
 

A wing has to be able to change direction. Spies has never been agile in that way. Nor does he tackle well in open field. Another of Dave's heroes. Best to forget about him.....this chap is huge when we dominate and nowhere when things are close.

No I would back him, once a bit debulked and after serious speed training, to make a big impression. He is simply not playing where he is best suited - on the wing. Tackling is far easier on the wing - touchline is your friend etc

Snapster I think we were all big fan s of Pierre and he looked like he would be an all time great before the illness struck. Its very much like Beast who burst onto the scene like a meteor and now has these palpitations which probably worry him on the field. Today he is okay but not great.

Vermulen has played with a lot of heart and quite well. Its his athleticism that is worrying me. Has his injury cost him some speed or is it he is playing a very tight game under instructions and we are just not seeing him get going in the open?

It would have been quite something to see him specialising at wing....but then he would have been competing with Habana or JP....somebody brilliant would have lost out!

pierre does lack mongrel but if one lacks that mongrel then you should not be playing in the pack. he has speed and has always had it and at 108 kg's with proper speed can be a real weapon in my view. jp and habana is still the best wingers around but having pierre as a option in the back will really boost our backline stocks.

vermeulen does not have the speed of spies but he is a real work horse and does the traditional work as a 8th must do. he is a bigger ball carrier as well so that for me in NH conditions come RWC 2015 can be a bigger asset. vemeulen has done nothing wrong and has in my view done a stellar job.

the first requirement for a backline player should be raw speed. the other aspects one can work on if there is proper training attached to it
