Springbok coach to be revealed early in April

"The South African Ruby Union (SARU) on Friday confirmed on that it hoped to announce the identity of the new Springbok coach following the Annual General Meeting at the start of next month.

Oregan Hoskins, president of SA Rugby, confirmed that a preferred candidate had been identified and that the recommendation would now be considered by the General Council.

“The High Performance committee examined a list of potential coaches and identified their preferred candidate against a set of pre-determined criteria,” said Hoskins.

“In broad terms we were looking for someone with a proven track record at an elite level; someone who would embrace the objectives of our Strategic Transformation Plan and someone who would understand the public demands of the job and what that entails.

“The Executive Council accepted the High Performance committee’s recommendation some time ago and the preferred candidate’s name will now be set before the General Council.”

Hoskins said that the preferred candidate would not be in attendance of the council meeting as his appointment would be dependent on their decision.

The AGM takes place on April 1 at the Southern Sun Hotel in Newlands, Cape Town. The meeting starts at 11:00.

 SARU did not reveal who the candidates were, but Allister Coetzee and Rassie Erasmus have been widely reported as favourites."

Nobody in their right mind would wait till April 2016 to appoint a coach leaving him only 2 months to prepare for a test series in June.  This is lunacy that only SARU can indulge in.

To even consider Coetzee for the job would be lunacy already - the man will take the Springboks further backwards than Meyer did - both are clueless about backline play.   

 The joke is the following remarks made by Hoskins:

"someone who would understand the public demands of the job and what that entails."

What is meant by that sentence is not at all clear.   It could be that Hoskins rate the demands of the ANC and trade unions as representing the "public de mands"  - but that would mean that the demands of real rugby supporting people are ignored.  

SARU would soon get the message if they make the wrong appointment - the public will just stay away from matches by a losing team and what will be produced will be losers if the wrong coach is appointed and sub-standard teams result from that appointment.

Its going to be Coetzee.. no doubt. Like it or not he checks all the boxes in their description:

He will be an adequate coach - certainly better than PDV. Stormers played Test style rugby under Coetzee.

 Coetzee with need some top notch assistant coaches to spin gold out of our current crop.   But by year three we might have found some real talent.

 We had a disastrous coach (De Villiers) - a deficient coach addicted to reputation players and a dumb game plan (Meyer) - so it is time to appoint another disaster.  
Failure will have nothing to do with lack of talent.  The"talent"  Meyer used in 2014 and 2015 was so far removed from talent as test playing performers was a joke.  The fact is that everybody but Mozart says there is a huge and amazing talent pool - and we will see in Super Rugby whether the loss of the reputation players are really missed at all, Indications are they are not and that they were in fact a negative of players playing way past their sell-by dates.   
   

A huge and amazing talent pool....oh boy....with that huge and amazing talent pool we are bound to win a tournament some time in the next decade. It's only been eight years.

 It was 8 years because Meyer could not get over the winners of 2007 - even though the 2011 showed that they were way past their best.    You will not accept it - but players that Meyer selected could never take any trophy and that was proven in 2014 and 2015.  There can be no bigger disgrace than "the most experienced Springbok team ever on the field of play" can lose against Japan.  That set the level to which the experienced players took the Springboks down to.       

 Carel built up a team from shambles in 3 months and got fired for it.

 I hear SALUSA 45 is considering a sponsorship for the Boks in the event of Coetze e getting the nod.

I heard that Pdivvy has thrown his hat into the ring. He meets all of the stated requirements.

I think the telling point here is that a "preferred candidate has been identified" . . . but they're too embarrassed to tell us who it is!
This is not looking good!
Don't employ an idiot just for the sake of it, give the job to Johan Ackerman with the simple brief to get the Springboks playing the same kind of rugby he's got the Lions playing.

Coetzee got the Stormers to play pre-2008 test rugby - same as Meyer - and where did that get us.  The system could get us wins against weaker teams (not always - remember Japan) but in the end nothing will come of it.
Coetzee plus quota selections and a stupid out-dated game plan spell a major disaster in capital letters.   That will represent the decline in SA rugby as Mozart constantly referred to.   It will have nothing to do with the talent pool and everything to do with rank political idiocy.             

 So there is  an opinion poll on News 24 about who the coach should be and the result thus far is as follows:-
Coetzee                =    2087  (21,32%)Erasmus                =    3871  (39,55%)Another Candidate  =    3829  (39,13%)
More than 78% of the participants find Coetzee unacceptable and that number is bound to grow with time.  Erasmus at 39,55% is also not getting the support of the majority of the participants, but seems to be far more acceptable than Coetzee.
Smith has been re-appointed by the AB's as deputy and is likely to take over from Hansen when he leaves - as he said himself - in two years time.  

 See the opinion poll above and that would indicate how popular selection Coetzee would be as coach - Erasmus is in a much stronger position - but it is clear that there is a strong feeling as well that neither of the two should be appointed.     

Mike 42% for Rassie when the other candidates have 22% and 36% respectively does in fact amount to Rassie having the majority vote. To be in the majority he does not have to have more votes than all the other candidates combined. He just has to beat them individually. Ask Beeno...he has been reading a lot about elections. :)

 Mike, it can be only Coetzee or Rassie. I've got a sneaky suspicion it's going to be Rassie and his team...they've already done some work. The head coach isn't as importand as the coaching theam as a whole. Coaching won't be the main issue during this cycle. Forced team sellections will be the major problem. Hoskins must go.

 I have updated the figures and it gives an indication of how seriously unpopular Coetzee would be as a coach for the Springboks.   
Not sure about the position of Hoskins is in this case.  He apparently knows that his job is on the line and is trying desperately to get support - one example being the efforts to keep Watson as the PE Rep.  That means at least two votes for him in any vote of no confidence.    

 I have updated the above opinion poll figures and it seems that the "Another candidate?" category is showing massive growth.   I think that that category is made up of supporter s of Ackermann and to some extent Plumtree.
