The easy ssssment is to comaprethe test win ratio of the Springboks in 2013 with the ratio this year:-

* 2013   =     83,33%

* 2014   =     69,24%

That is rather a simplitic way of looking at the team performance.   The team stuggled badly against Argentina and lost the away test against Australia - which they won with ease the previous year.   Tey strugged badly iin the second test against Wales in June and lost to them away.   Those were all sigs of a detrioration of team form this year.

On the positive side there was a noticeable improvement in the away game against the All blacks, the beating of the All Blacks at home and the win over England.

So What went wrong this year?

I think there is a variety of reasons for the downward trend.

Performance of Aging Players

There was a very few changes to the ocore team who played lat eyar and this year - the only real difference ws in the performances of aging players.

The following players showed a serious trend in sliding performances:-

JP Pietersen -  Alarming Loss of pace

Bryan Habana - Serious decline in performance level

Jean de Villiers - Serious decline in performance level

Morne Steyn - always poor this year disastrously so

Gurthro Steenkamp - disastrous selection

Jannie du Plessis - serious decline in performances

Bismarck du Plessis - marked decline in performances

Bakkies Botha -  dismal performances

Problematic Selections

Meyer made some seriously problematic selections:-

*  The squad selection was seriously problematic.    The squad was filled up with players like Bakkies Botha, Gurthro Steenkamp,  Juam Smith and Morne Steyn;

*   The poor identification of the deficiencies of payers who under-performed and their consequential continued selection;

*   The selection of two essentially number 12 centers to make up the center pairing - that effectively had a detrimental effect on both defending and attacking backlne play.

*    The weakening of the Tight 5 a specifically and the team as a whole by the selection of Victor Matfield.

*    The selection of Mohoje - who is not an international level player;

*     The selection fo hendricks - who looked good in attacking play and a serious problem in defense and under high balls.

Poor individual performances  - lack of consistency of some players

As brilliant as Le Roux was oin some games - as poor he was in the away gae against Wales.

Hougaard was indifferent against the Aussies and looked good against the AB's at hom.   He was poor against the irish and a disaster against  Wales away.

Where to now

I think Meyer has the opportunity to see how especiallythe aging players perform in Super 15.  There is no way that the team can go forward with under-erforming players. In the case of foreign club players - a sinilar detailed evaluation of their i performances shoud be undertaken.    If the 2014 trend of test and Super 15 performances shows negatove trends - the players should rather be replaced.

Dubious selections such as Matfield, Mohoje and Hendricks should be eliminated.   Matfield is not really delivering as a line out player and he is a serious iiability in Tight 5 play - not up to standard anymore.

I may be wrong - but taking into account this age - today's injury of De Villiers may be career-ending.   He is likely to be off for at least 6 to 10 months and that may be problematic insofar as tem development ebfore the  WC is concerned.

A special programme should be provided  to identify potential wings and  centers and a study should eb amde of their development next year.   Special attention should be paid to make sure  DE Allende is developed as a proper 13.

What do you think?

 ...not so clevermike... if willie le roux has a good game the Boks usually win but today he had an absolute shocker...also puts into perspective how lucky that win over Wales was in June where you won by only one point thanks to yr saviour Steve Walsh ..

 I think there are two reasons:
1. ANC policy regarding transformation players.2. A coach who is out of his league.

Perhaps it is time for SARU to introduce an African pure black team to play first division rugby to help mature players instead of forcing them into a Springbok team before they are ready.
I have no problem supporting a team even if they were all black in Springbok teams as long as they are selected on merit.
Remember select the BEST NOT THE REST

 Yea right....

In 2013 all the losses were due to Morne. So we got rid of him.

And three of the four losses this year is still due to Morne, even though he wasn't playing? Interesting.

 The Trooth  F airy
Nonsence - the two losses in 2013 were not due to Morne - he made really ne gative contributions tothe two All Balck tests we lost - but cannot blame solely for the first loss - he eas largely responsible for the AB' getting a bonus point win though.   In the case of the Ellis Patrk loss he was really the dismal factor that contributed 75% to that loss.
However, this year he was even worse.   He tried desperately - but unsuccessfully to ensure an Argentian draw in Pretoria and also to ensure a loss in Salta - but unsuccessfully so.   In the Perth test he was at last successful in vausing a Springbok loss.   With him in the team we would enver hacve beaten the All Blacks and woudhave lost against England as well.   Better he stays in  France  - that is if his club does not try eand terinate his contract.   S orry - but eh should enver have been near the squad.

 Guys I am not blaming any one player.
The players are selected and do their best on the field.
But skill set and natural ability go hand in hand with experience at the top level in all sport.
Please read my last sentence of my previous posting to understand my concern about selection.

 It's that boofhead Boer mentality. You'll never get rid of it until you start selecting more black players. Witness the sharp improvement in the Bok 7s team in the last couple of years and you will understand......

I am sick of reading your Morne BS about how he lost us th OZ game. He missed touch yes but 14 players failed to defend what should have been easily defendable. We lost because Habana was off the field for 12 mins due to another pathetic yellow. I am not saying I want him in the set up....just quit your whining about this, it is tedious and boring. Much like your non stop belly ache on Matfield.

We don't know what to do with the ball when we get it. As BB said above, bosh rugby. No finesse, we just try to flatten whatever is in the way until we cross the tryline. If whatever is in the way doesn't budge we pretty much don't score. Willie is about the only player who can split defences open. When he's off the boil like he was today there is nothing going on in the backline.

Wales played a smart tactical game but they executed so poorly that it's a dire testament to where we're at that they still outscored us.

Our brilliant team of 2007 is aging, and the replacements are woeful. We are in a barren period, but at least we have now dealt with the naive youngsters will rule the world argument.

 Meyer has reaped the rewards of his folly.  Even as Mallet and a number here pointed out the game against Italy was misused. But lets not again go down the wailing and moaning path. Meyer mention some 25 players out for example. An unwarranted yellow cost us the game.
Neither should we go over board re a few dropped balls by Willie or a mistake by Hougaard or Pollard.Pollard kick was ameter or so from being brilliant. He went for the win.I have little doubt Meyer will be able to pick a very powerful RWC squad. The big concern is will he still be enamoured with that disaster Matfiled and any other geriatric and will quotas mess up the squad and coaching staff.Meyer has largely wasted a year in certain positions and lost momentum.

Beeno: it is hardly a time for you to be "Bwahahhahahahaah"ing.
On the "greasy ball", I have started to watch the game & it looks like the roof is closed so that excuse is elminated - one must be systematic in these things

 Hi Cloudy   Checking the turn over stats now... could be a case of "loo se balls", lol
Wales manhandled the Bok scrum on the 55 minute mark, just drove it back, got the penalty & three points takes the score to 12-6.

 The Hendrick's yellow was 50/50, perhaps should have been a penalty. Probably a yellow was given because it was about the third penalty for the same infringement.
