After a number of games played in Super Rugby and on Club level - a realistic review of the player is necessary. I have classified the players in the following categories and gave motivation per player to clarify the performances:-
Very GoodGoodAbove AverageAverageAverage to poorPoorAtrocious
Super rugby
Willie le Roux - Good
Bar in the game against the Crusaders - where the whole game plan for the Sharks went awry and Le Roux was very ordinary - he was good in the other games in both attacking and defending play.
JP Pietersen - Above Average
Pietersen is a very quiet player in most matches - and is difficult to categorize. He scored a good try in the Stormers game though - hence the qualification.
Jesse Kriel - Average to Poor
He played very little rugby in Super 15 - but when he did play he was at best average to poor. He seems to have lost some pace and concentrate on the crashball business - not good enough for an outsider center and full back. Will have to show vast improvement in games in future - just not up to standard at this stage of the competition.
Jan Serfontein - Average to Poor
He played mostly at 13 - where he seems to be not really good enough. Too many ball possession losses to be really acceptable.
Damian de Allende - Has not played
Handre Pollard - Has not played
Patrick Lambe - Has not played
Rudy Paige - Atrocious
This guy was so poor that I cannot find anything positive in his play. He is far too often missing when a ball comes out of maul situation - he is clueless about when to pass balls and when to kick - his kicking game is inaccurate and the cause of frequent possession losses.
Pieter-Steph du Toit - Good
This guy forms a very good combination with Etzebeth in the lock position and has been even better than Etzebeth in some games. So we have at last a good test lock pair
Eben Etzebeth - Very Good
Was consistently the best lock in the competition.
Lood de Jager - Above average
He has been above average in games and he did very well in most aspects of the lock requirements. His defensive play was very good.
Frans Malherbe - Above average
There are some question marks as to his scrumming, but the outstanding work done by the players outside of scrumming put him in the above average category
Adriaan Strauss - Average
Has done very little but in the main his performance can be classified as average.
Tendai Mtawarira - Average to Poor
There is a definite problem with this guys scrumming - his scrumming has been under par - while his performance outside of scrumming did not put him on a higher level.
Coenie Oosthuizen - Poor
Oosthuizen scrumming was poor on all games and he did very little outside of scrumming.
Club Performances
Zane Kirchner - Not known
Bryan Habana - Average
Nothing much done to write home about in the games he did play in.
Jean de Villiers - Only one bench game - not classified
Fourie du Preez - Average
He retired from all forms of rugby.
Ruan Pienaar - Average to Poor
He had a mixed bag of performances for his club - some above average and some poor. The best way to classify his performances is to place him in the grouping as given
Willem Alberts - Poor
In the games he did play in he was below par insofar as productivity is concerned - still a very low work rate player. No real asset for his club.
Duane Vermeulen - Average
Vermeulen has been very quiet in the games he played in for his clubs. Definitely not performing up to the level he did in SA.
Francois Louw - Average
Victor Matfield - Poor
Played mostly from the bench and when he was on the field of play was generally way below par. No real asset for his club.
Jannie du Plessis - Poor
Played mostly from the bench and when he was on the field of play was generally way below par. No real asset for his club.
Bismarck du Plessis - Average
Also basically a bench player - but hen eh did play he was average in performance.
The above indicates that a number of players should never have been in teh WC squad and that in the five months since they have been performing on a level that should have been clear by the time they were selected for the Springbok squad.
