Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer rewarded scrumhalf Cobus Reinach for his exceptional form in the Vodacom Super Rugby series with a call-up to the Bok squad for the upcoming Castle Lager Rugby Championship.
Reinach and Stormers midfielder Damian de Allende were the only two uncapped players named in the Bok squad of 30 that will contest the Rugby Championship as the Bok coach named a strong line-up that will once again be led by captain Jean de Villiers, who missed the Castle Lager Incoming Series in June through injury.
De Allende was in the June squad as well, but was forced to withdraw through injury. Others who were injured but have since recovered include props Tendai Mtawarira, Frans Malherbe, lock Eben Etzebeth and utility back Pat Lambie.
With the selections Meyer has at least partly answered some of the questions hanging over his squad and showed his hand in the way he wants to play in this year’s Rugby Championship.
While indications are that a large part of the starting line-up that faced Wales will be heading into the first game against Argentina at Loftus Versfeld on August 16, there will be fierce competition in several areas in the starting line-up with little to choose between players.
The biggest conundrum for the Boks at the moment is the number 10 position where ironically the loss of Fourie du Preez at nine to injury makes the decision on the playmaker so much more difficult.
While Morne Steyn is still the banker for Meyer and his go-to man in times of trouble, the impressive debut shown by Handre Pollard against Scotland probably won him the spot ahead of Johan Goosen, who was excluded and now will have much more time to concentrate on furthering his career at Racing Metro in France.
Yet it is the combination that will be of vital importance behind the scrum, as Ruan Pienaar remains the front runner to start at nine, while Reinach is new and Francois Hougaard needs to up his game if he is to become a long-term solution for the position. Oh no not a combo of Pienaar and Morne!)
Lambie’s return to fitness as well makes the 10 a much more interesting choice, as Meyer will have to choose between two players who are tried and tested in the high-pressure environment or an up and coming young star in Pollard.
Pollard isn’t the only find of the June internationals to stay on – winger Cornal Hendricks, fresh from a Commonwealth Gold medal, lock Lood de Jager and flank Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje are all retained after impressing the Bok management with their work rate, ethic and form during the four weeks they were with the squad in June.
While Eben Etzebeth is back and a lot is expected of him, the inclusion of Bakkies Botha and De Jager poses an interesting question of who will deputize for Matfield at five in the series. (The show pony shouldnt even be in the squad. I dont like to pray misfortune on anyone but the temptation is great!!!!!) De Jager (Three times the p;layer that wee matdiled is) has played five regularly for the Toyota Cheetahs while there has been some talk of making Etzebeth a long term five lock, but it would be a big surprise if this is the stage to do that.(ANYBODY BUT WEE MATFILED 106 KG AND 3 KG LIGHTER THAN COETZEE!!!!!!!!)
Of those missing out, the names of tighthead Coenie Oosthuizen and flank Siya Kolisi stand out rather boldly, but both have struggled with form at Super Rugby level and Oosthuizen’s demolition at the hands of Schalk van der Merwe in the Lions big win over the Cheetahs a few weeks back probably killed off his chances. (OU SNAPSTER MISSED THAT )
Schalk Brits, the English Premiership player of the year, gets the nod as the third hooker while Boks JP Pietersen and Schalk Burger were not considered for this squad as they have rejoined their Japanese clubs.
Meyer said it was great to have De Villiers back in charge of the squad.
“It’s great to have Jean back to lead the side in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.
“Victor Matfield and Jan Serfontein both did superbly well in his absence, but he is our captain and I’m sure he will slot back into the side without any difficulty. The same goes for Eben, Frans and Patrick, all of whom have been part of the squad before.
“We will medically assess all the players in the squad in Johannesburg next week. This will not only include the players who missed the June tests because of injury, but also someone such as Mtawarira, who has been out of action for a while. We will deal with every player and his needs individually.”
Commenting on the inclusion of Hendricks, a recent gold medal winner in sevens at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, Mohoje, De Jager and Pollard, Meyer said: “These players have impressed from the first minute they joined us. This is a step up for all of them, but that is the kind of challenge we thrive on.
“It’s never easy cutting a squad down in size and we’re fortunate that we have a number of experienced players who will be on stand-by should their services be needed.”
Meyer said he is looking forward to the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, which kicks off on Saturday, 16 August when Australia host New Zealand in Sydney and the Springboks take on Argentina at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria (kick-off at 17h00).
The Springbok squad will gather in Johannesburg for a pre-competition camp from 4 to 8 August and then again on 10 August in Pretoria, where they will prepare for the test against Argentina.
“We’ve been steadily improving over the past two years but another step-up is needed this season,” said Meyer.
“It’s been a theme for us since the start of the season and we must simply keep on accelerating in the coming two months. We’ve set ourselves some goals for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship and we’ll have to be focused and switched on from the moment we get together in Johannesburg.
“Winning matches and scoring tries remain foremost in our minds. During the four matches in June, we scored 23 tries, which we were very happy with. I think we can be proud of the rugby we played against Wales and Scotland, but that is in the past now and we have a new competition to get ready for.
“There are many good things we can build on from the June series, but also some things we need to work on if we’re going to be competitive in the coming months. It’s a challenge we relish though and I can’t wait to get going.”
Injured players who were not available for selection after featuring in 2013 or earlier in 2014, are Flip van der Merwe (knee), Pieter-Steph du Toit (knee), Arno Botha (knee), Pierre Spies (bicep), Fourie du Preez (ankle) and Jaque Fourie (ankle).

Hey that Lionheart Warren Whitely got better stats than all those loosies puttogether...must've tackled his little heart out all season for the Lions but not even a mention in dispatches...is he abit old in the tooth or from the wrong province or something ?...maybe just a case of stats being like a drunk with a lamppost...more for support than illumination...

Yes indeed brycy but instead we got Mohoje - who spent a lot of time on the bench for the Cheetahs. What exactly has he done to deserve a call up other than anc quota pressure.
Thankfully we got rid of the hopeless Kolisi. Mohoje could be better than Kolisi so we must be thankfull for small mercies.
Given that Louw can play 6 and 7 Whitley would have been a better bet than Mohoje. Alberts also plays 7 - who is the back up to Vermuelen in the squad nobody. So W hitely or Van der walt should have been called up.

Some weird calls by Meyer.... to put it mildly.
As far as I can remember from recent tests, the Boks never had the edge in the battle for the ball on the ground, indicating that Marcell Coetee, Schalk Burger, Alberts and /or Flo were struggling.
A few days ago however I read in Rugby365 that Juan Smith said that he would be available for the RC series and Heyneke was extatic over this news.
And what did we got today? ... no Juan Smith. What a fucking backstabbing from ?? ... I suspect politics once again intervened and we got oupa Mohoje - clearly a quota selection.

I think there are various issues that is pulling Meyer into differing directions. Meyer must have faced the prospect of hacing to select a replacement for Kolisi - who used to eb in the squad last year - but was no good this year. He could not replace Kolisi with a player of a different colour and had to stick to the Black scenario.
What Meyer should have done in two cases would have improved the squad. He should have replaced Alberts - the real problem case on the ground with zero contribution in that facet of the play - with Juan Smith - but that could have been problematic - since Juan Smith is in view of his age not a real prospect for the future. Juan has had a long injury problem and although he survived without injury the latest club scene in France - he may not survive in the much more intense playing level - ie in internationals. Meyer here took the more conservative approach and apparently decided to give Alberts another chance. Whether that is indeed wise is a real question.
I think the same scenario is in evidence in the case of the looseheads. I think that when the WC comes around next year - the weird selection of Fat Steenkamp will also be a thing of the past. He probably wants to give Du Toit a chance to settle in on CC level before he brings him into the squad. That is likely to happen in the EOYT.
It would be much more interesting to see what happens as to the match day squad selection. Meyer has two automatic exclusions - namely one hooker and one scrummie. That means that there will be five other exclusions of players from the match day squad. It would be interesting to see who will be the other five exclusions. This is likely to be one wing (either Mvovo or Hendricks), one flyhalf, one loosie, 1 lock and 1 loose head prop.
I do think that he would have Lambie and Serfontein on the bench and the lock bench choice is likely to be interesting as well. The loosehead bench prop will be between Nyakane and Steenkamp - both really questionable options.
Against Argentina it is likely that a player like Pienaar may miss out completely to see how the other two goes in a test environment. He is also likely to keep Hendricks ahead of Mvovo on the wing. He may play Louw and Coetzee as the two loosies and put Mohoje on the bench. I think that he wants to give Alberts another chance - but he is more likely not to actually play in view of his inability to recover balls on the ground . probaby a safety mechanism - that one.
Morne is an interesting case. He is not an option at full back or anywhere else on the fileld of play than at flyhalf. He needs a second goal kicker - but he also have to cover for replacement needs at full back, on the wing and at center. Under match injury situations he could move Le Roux to the wing and bring on another full back - that is why I think that the bench option is likely to be Lambie.
One can only guess what Meyer is likely to do - but I would not lay money on players like Bakkies Botha and Steenkamp being in the match day squad against Argentina.
