Jugernaut

I am worried about it too.  See what I wrote elsewhere about that injury - it sounds very serious to me as well.   Lets hope he recovers completely and is able to continue with his career.

Jugger0 its not really the years as Frans is still young. Its looks like his playing whilst grossly overweight may have had a lot more to do with it than the years issue.

Very sad news and hope Steyn gets back. So far no one had mentioned the injury being career threatening?  How the heck was he allowed to get so overwight whilst being part of the sharks squad.  Is this professional managment of players? (Its no use moaning about his stay in France. He has been back long enough to deal with the weight problem)

And a warm welcome to the board Jugger0. I would like to say also congrats to your team in whipping the abs! We have some kiwis here and we had to do our best to help them over the crises by telling them their team was crap!

Baboon-ou, "British" does not necessarily mean "English". This "Jugernaut" chap might well be a Pom but he could just as easily be a Scot or a Welshman . . . and I think it's been about 60 years since a Celtic side beat the All Blacks.

Whatever nationality "Jugernaut" (sic) is, we know that he's someone dumb enough to choose a board name that he can't actually spell.

rooitwit you miss the point entirely. One ought to take every opportunity to mention the poms victory over the abs lest some folk here sweep it under the carpet and forget!

I am sure Juger0 knows exaclty what he is doing  in choosing his board name. A little creativity is always welcome.

Actually Baboon-ou, the point that is sailing high over your flat sloping (yet "suave") forehead is the fact that just because he's "British" (allegedly) does not necessarily mean that he's  "English".

You do know that Britain consists of more than just England, don't you Baboon-ou? Please tell me your knowledge of geography is not as laughably pathetic as your knowledge of rugby!

Oh, and I don't think he's being creative or clever or anything, I think he simply can't spell "Juggernaut" and now he's stuck with a misspelled name.

Rubbish rooitwt! He simply personalised the word. You are majoring in minors again - being mentally a minor is anothr reason for my lack of surprise!

The subtle way I school the abs has sailed over you  flat head with that slack jaw - neaderathal was it?. Bwahahahahahahahha

Anyhow rooitwit my good friend its another stunning day here in Cape Town and I am not going to get down to a pre primary level with you today being the suave fellow I am   (I do detct some shades of green about this! - Seb realises I am an experienced man not so)

Juger0 must already think you are plain nuts! You could have kept it a secret a little longer?

Beeno

I have read up again on Compartment syndrome   There is nothing I came across that indicate that the syndrome is the result of an injury exaperated by weight or unfitness during sport activity - so where did you get your story about "grossly overweight" as a contibutory reason from.   There is no doubt that Steyn is overweight and they were working on it - but it seems to me you are making an unfounded assumption in this case.

However, what worries me is the recurrent issue that came up.   Minor compartment syndrome can arise when playing sport or working and the pain stops shortly after the activity stops,  but returns when the activity is resumed during the said day.   However, in the case of acute syndrome it can apparantly return any time after the process has been treated and the problem has been solved.   That sound very much to me like it is a rugby playing career ending problem.  For Steyn's sake I hope it is not.

Mike I said may -a suggesion of a possibility - not stating a fact.

Thanks for the info though. It may actually explain his condition. Perhaps during training there is pain etc. We all know Frans has simply not been himself and have wondered what was going on - snapster  however  thought he was in ripping form or close to it!.

I also find it odd that this was not known before? Can it just have happened.

Beeno I am also suspicious about the injury. There was nothing in the game before he came off that indicated a serious on the spot injury and Steyn did not get on field treatment before he limped off - as far as i can remember. Therefore there was no trauma situation that could have induced the injury during the game. It is likely that it recurred - but was a particularly bad recurrence. I also think that Steyn was not in peak physical condition since his return from France and that he could have started off this year in particularly poor condition after his injury. Excessive fat could cause the problem as well - since it could restrict the muscle functioning. I believe that the trauma situation was really not in evidence during the game and it could have been induced originally with his injury last year and remained in place since then - with mild recurrence during matches. Remember - he missed out on at least three matches when he came off the bench; was subbed at minute 60 in two matches and only in his last two matches was again on the field from the start. Steyn definitely was in poor form this year - despite all the protestations to the contrary by Saffex and by some others. He did show some improvement this past round - but was never really top of the log - the exertions by him could have brought on the problem recurrence with a vengeance. The above are not really factually-based - but if it is the case - it means the end of his rugby playing career. But lets be optimistic and hope it is not and that he recovers fully.
