The Stormers are gearing up for a titanic clash with the Leicester Tigers this Saturday in the Investec Champions Cup, and they’ve just been handed a major boost. The Cape Town team’s backline sorcerer, Ruhan Nel, is back on the pitch after shaking off a pesky calf injury picked up last December. His timing couldn’t be better as the team seeks redemption following a harrowing defeat.

Backline and attack coach Dawie Snyman couldn't hide his relief during Tuesday’s presser, emphasizing Nel’s dual-threat capability.

"Ruhan brings a lot, not just defensively but also as a leader. That kind of presence helps settle things when you’re under pressure."

Nel’s return is particularly crucial given the firepower possessed by a Tigers backline that boasts internationals like Freddie Steward and Jack van Poortvliet.

The need for Nel’s strategic nous was painfully underscored by the Stormers’ recent 61-10 thrashing at the hands of Harlequins—a match that ended their impressive 10-game winning streak. Snyman’s candid take?

"It wasn’t a great performance. We were under pressure, and we beat ourselves in one or two key moments. Credit to Harlequins – they were phenomenal – but it’s not the standard we expect."

Andre-Hugo Venter, the team's hooker who skipped the London trip, pinpointed turnovers as the Achilles' heel in that debacle. "As soon as you start getting momentum and then lose the ball, it’s frustrating," he lamented. He further noted that breakdown issues snuffed out any chance of rhythm, making it tough for the team to find their groove.

Both the player and coach view the upcoming Leicester showdown as a pivotal moment to steady the ship. Venter stated, "It doesn’t matter if you’re playing or not – if the Stormers lose, you lose. It hurts all of us. That’s why this week is massive. It’s a chance to bounce back and put things right." Snyman echoed this sentiment, admitting, "The manner of the loss wasn’t ideal, but it’s our job now to fix those areas and make sure we get it right."

With the first-choice squad having stayed back and trained in Cape Town, alongside the gradual return of the touring squad, the Stormers are piecing together their best formation to ensure the Tigers face a fierce contest this weekend.
