The injury curse continues to plague the Stormers as they gear up for a monumental clash against Leinster in the Vodacom URC semi-final this Saturday in Dublin. Hard-hitting changes have shaken the lineup, with the team making three crucial adjustments due to injuries. Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu with an ankle issue and wing Seabelo Senatla suffering from concussion were precluded from the journey. Compounding the misery, lock Ruben van Heerden couldn't shake off a head knock, despite travelling with the squad.
Stepping into the breach are Jurie Matthee, who will don the No. 10 jersey, and Wandisile Simelane, who takes over Senatla’s position on the wing. Connor Evans is set to partner with Adré Smith in the second row to fill the gap left by Van Heerden. The bench sees a solitary change—fullback Warrick Gelant slots in to provide additional backline support.
"This will be a big challenge for everyone involved against a team with a great pedigree and formidable home record, but these are the occasions we live for, and I have no doubt that our team will put in a worthy performance,"
stated John Dobson, the Stormers’ director of rugby. He further highlighted the readiness of the incoming players, "We lost a few players last week, but those coming in have all played important roles in this campaign and are ready to give their all on Saturday."Meanwhile, Leinster will also be feeling the pinch as they lose their Ireland hooker for the semi-final showdown. On the brighter side for the Stormers, the midfield duo of captain Ruhan Nel and Dan du Plessis, who has recovered from a knee knock, are set to become the team’s most-capped centre pairing with 31 starts, surpassing legends De Wet Barry and Marius Joubert.
The team sheet for the Stormers reads as follows: 15 Damian Willemse, 14 Wandisile Simelane, 13 Ruhan Nel (c), 12 Dan du Plessis, 11 Leolin Zas, 10 Jurie Matthee, 9 Imad Khan, 8 Evan Roos, 7 Ben-Jason Dixon, 6 Paul de Villiers, 5 Connor Evans, 4 Adré Smith, 3 Neethling Fouché, 2 André-Hugo Venter, 1 Ntuthuko Mchunu. Bench: 16 JJ Kotzé, 17 Vernon Matongo, 18 Zachary Porthen, 19 Salmaan Moerat, 20 Ruan Ackermann, 21 Marcel Theunissen, 22 Stefan Ungerer, 23 Warrick Gelant.
As kick-off approaches, the patched-up Stormers squad faces a formidable test against a seasoned Leinster side. The stage is set, and despite the setbacks, the South African team is determined to make a memorable stand in Dublin.
