Brady had an ordinary game by his standards, but he clinically directed the last winning drive. Wilson his 26 year old opponent by contrast, given the win on a plate by an incredibly lucky catch on the one....blew it by totally telegraphing his pass and then trying to force it into traffic.

Two top rated QBs in football in 2014 .....38 year old Manning and 37 year old Brady.

One more sport where experience counts.

One more sport where steroids and the ability to play for thirty seconds a match are paramount !
Oh...and let's not forget, how deflated was the ball in the Semi that got them to the Final, Mozart ?

I went out with someone who was a Quarter Back ( he also played Rugby and other sports ) Funniest thing ever was when he tried to explain the rules to my Mum, not that she was interested as she hates American Football   He was South African though....so I am sorry to tell you that at least one of your number played the game !

Yes, they would.....if every match lasted five hours so they could stop for a little rest and swop the players every few minutes so a specialist could pop on and do their thing ! And also if wide ranging drug abuse was legal, rather than covert and everyone could wear full body armour. Until then, I think it best if the NFL players stick to competing against their own countrymen, at their own sport !!!
And to call the rest of the world insular in a post about America  Oh boy, you have to say that the lack of understanding of the word " irony " must be catching !!!!

Rugby players playing NFL would be superstars. NFL players playing rugby would not smell a 1st division side bar the odd few.
The game is a joke. Bunch of fat blokes in armour

Well JW getting old is a constant series of surprises. My grand daughter when she was six put it best when told that a family dog had died because it was old....she said:

Anyone that abuses dogs is a complete coward and deserves their teeth kicked in! As for the topic, for every example of a coffin dodger doing something great in sport, their are ten examples of some spring chicken doing something great! Take Pollard against the All Blacks at Ellis park for example. This topic is pointless! That being said, if an old player is better than a young player, they should play. Once they are no longer better, they should be dragged into the field and shot!

I don't know what is more pointless . . . comparing the fat overpaid drug-abusing donkeys of the NFL with rugby players or banging on about the average ages of yet another sport as if it has some kind of relevance to the average ages of rugby.

I mean really, just how limited is one's knowledge of sport in general to put up such an ignorant and narrow-minded post?

Funny stuff. But ignorant and kinda stupid. So the NFL has no athletes. I much prefer rugby as a game, but no athletes? How many rugby players have ever broken 10.5 in the 100 metres. Frankly I can't think of any, maybe Habana at his peak, but it's not recorded in an official race. Hell we get excited because Senatla does 10.6. Here are some recorded   NFL times:

Senatla 10.16

Its one thing running at speed, its another thing being skilful enough to beat defenders.....you don't see much of that in NFL

Athletic is relative.......running at pace in a straight line with no obstacles in your way involves little skill.

The stats for rugby players running the 100m are not really available as they don't bother with it

Show me the race Senatla ran 10.16....I find no evidence of it. Here is a more realistic picture:

FASTEST 100 METER RUGBY TIMES

By Allyn Freeman | 11.05.14

Compiled by the New Zealand  Herald newspaper.

Best 100m times:
Usain Bolt (world record holder) - 9.58 secs
Carlin Isles (Fastest in rugby sevens) - 10.13
Tonderai Chavhanga (Fastest in Super Rugby) - 10.27
Bryan Habana (Springbok) - 10.4
Joe Rokocoko (former All Black) - 10.66
Doug Howlett (former All Black) - 10.68

A guy like Howlett, who was super fast in rugby, would be ordinary in the NFL.

There is no link, it was mentioned in commentary in the last 7's tournament he played in.

There is no skill involved in NFL and given the number of players on the park and all the stoppages.....I cant see how speed plays a part.

Its a boring game with little skill involved other than the quarter back being able to find his receivers.

What you insular clods miss is that each sport develops athleticism appropriate to the game. Would most of these huge rugby players, even the backs, last the 90 minutes of continuous running involved in a soccer gam?. Not likely.
Would a Bok or NZ pack survive the 80 or so downs in football, straining with all their might against another 300 lb man....their muscles would be jelly after 20 downs.
Can the best popular diva last more than 15 minutes of the sheer volume of output required in a real opera....no way.
This stuff I read about NFL players smacks of ignorance. You have a country of over 300 million people that traditionally has dominated athletics....and the biggest paying sport can't attract great athletes?
This reminds me of the stupid stuff guys used to sprout at school that all soccer players are sissies. It's embarrassing that we debate at such a low level.

Dave these are professional athletes in a highly competitive, extremely lucrative sport....they are completely fit for the purpose. You might just as well make jokes about Maa Nonu lasting a soccer match. If they are "fat" it's because weight has a huge role to play on the line....Japanese wrestlers are "fatter" but underneath that layer, massively muscled.

I don't watch much NFL I prefer soccer and rugby. But I'm under no illusions which sport would win the most athletic medals....the NFL by a mile.

As for the size of the players, we all know the bigger players tend to have bulked up speedily, which is the most obvious sign of steroid abuse.

It's a crap sport to be sure but it works for the Yanks because the chest-beating, burger-guzzling Yank rednecks are too stupid to know any better and it allows the corporations to ply them with commercials every time the fatties on the field run out of puff and need a break.

I watched the NFL for many years and they are specialized athletes. In general the rugby players are more versatile than many of the players in the NFL but players like wide receivers are not fatties and they are very skilled and fast.
I still prefer rugby - no question about that but I think it is factually wrong to dismiss all NFL players as fatties. Doesn't mean it's not fun though

I mentioned it in this thread because Mozart was talking about speeds over 100m
I know a lot of players, even before the pro era, like Ian Hunter, who was a very big chap, could run jolly fast and fast enough to make athletics squads....I remember him going out jogging with the Olympic Athlete Derek Redmond and coming back with a grin on his face as he had thrashed him on the return leg ! He was a supreme athlete, a pleasure to watch in the Gym.....
The worrying thing is, steroid abuse is rife, the bulk up speed of any athlete that is incredibly swift is always the result of drugs. That is the sad reality. Now the players have to get bigger and bigger to try to compete. It's ridiculous.
