The following from News24:-
"Would the RFU have broken the bank for Allister Coetzee?

How many provincial unions are chasing Mzwandile Stick as a backline coach?

This not to belittle either man, but to make a point. That being to question whether we as a nation are chasing excellence, or settling for people who are happy to pursue an ulterior mandate?

Yes we have a unique situation here in South Africa, but as said in a previous column, you simply cannot task the coach of the highest team in the land with transformation. That is a cop out and an admittance that all other attempts in this arena have failed.  And that’s why seeing sports minister Fikile Mbalula, late as usual, sitting at Tuesday’s press conference looking like the cat that ate the cream, got my goat.

“I don’t believe it is a token appointment,” said Mbalula. “Today is a great moment for rugby,” continued the minister. “I thank the board for the appointment. I am happy with where rugby is going with regard to transformation. It’s no longer cheap talk.”

Really? If transformation is such a biggie, and clearly it is, then Mbalula and the government, together with SARU, the schools, clubs, universities, provinces, and the franchises must be tasked with giving the Bok coach more players of colour to pick.

Not putting a black coach in place because he will be more inclined to pick black players!

All this does is put Coetzee on the back foot from the get go.  People, including me, chased Heyneke Meyer out of town for various reasons, but mine and many others' gripe was primarily about the dour and old fashioned brand of rugby we were playing, and not believing him to be the man to evolve the SA game.

Coetzee was chased out of the Cape because his team had been labelled the “Wall of Cape Town” such was his focus on defence, along with his inability to win games once through to the knock-out stages of Super Rugby.   So is he really the man who is going to rock the boat and rattle cages while improving skills and conditioning in order to implement a more modern attack-based game?

Unlikely.

Nope, this era is about new objectives and new KPIs. Not that they are mutually exclusive from on field success, but hells bells, that is a big ask. So what we need from SARU is their public backing of Coetzee by making these KPIs known to all. Having a set of private objectives, yet setting the media and public loose on him around only on-field success would just be unfair!

Already Coetzee has had to defend the Stick appointment, declaring it his responsibility to develop young coaches of colour. This while coaching a side that needs to be 50% black by 2019. Is this fair on a single human?

“Nice” or “Fine” are not words that I want on my tombstone when I join Frans Erasmus and Tommie Laubscher propping up the bar at heaven’s rugby pub, as I think they are the definition of taking the path most trod or fence sitting. Yet this is how I feel about Coetzee’s appointment.

And perhaps given the new set of objectives, a safe appointment is what’s needed, but do not call it chasing excellence, and do not ask me to get excited about it.

Allister Coetzee is a good person, and a great rugby man. The Bok coaching job is factually the toughest gig in world rugby. That he has chosen to take it on shows character and guts. As a South African I will support him 100%

.

But let’s be open an honest about his objectives, and judge him accordingly."

More or less my feeling on the issue too.

With what resources? Everything is down in SA. The excellent men have had only one main effect so far: guzzling down resources, squandering them, depleting them.

Now that a new population is introduced to be trained, the resources are no longer there. They were there. In the meantime, they were consumed. And they were consumed on stuff like rugby.

Rugby did not make SA wealthier. It made it poorer.

"Not putting a black coach in place because he will be more inclined to pick black players!"
That is exactly the point: the expectation they fancy.

The transformation targets wont be met, the only way for them to be met is that resources from other countries like Mozambique are squandered by SA excellent men just as they did with SA resources.

Everytime somebody raises his hand to ask where the transformation targets are at, the excellent men will answer that Coetze is a black coach more inclined to pick black players.

There has been no growth in SA, only depletion of resources at a high rate. Very high. By the excellent men. Who are excellent because they consume bigger and faster. That is the mark of their excellence.
Keep selecting the excellent.

A team consisting of quotas and the elderly ... is that the future?
We have to spoon feed the assistant back line coach as well now?
Wow ... !!! Seems my hope of empty stadiums will be an easy ask.

Note his conclusion Mike - too bad you can't bring yourself there.

We're not looking for a good person.
We're looking for a person who can take us to the next level.
Meyer I'm told is also a "good person" ... Meyer I'm told is also a "great rugby man"... and look how that turned out.
You were a Meyer man weren't you Matey? You cheered the likes of Matfield on, didn't you Matey?
Your just another ignorant twat who lives abroad and thinks he can lecture us.

Clean - Coetzee is a good coach. I agree he's not a next level guy. Who is? Ackerman maybe? Would love to him as the coach but he's green and doesn't "fit the bill".
That's not Coetzee's fault. He's literally the best man for the job and a lot better than people are giving him credit for.
Get mad at the ANC for their political interference and crashing the country's economy, but to withhold support for the Springbok team and then take it a step further to support their opponents is ludicrous.
As a Stormers guy, Meyer and Matfield were anathema to me. I thought they were both treated unfairly and incorrectly by many on this board and deserved a defense.

Oimatey, I wouldn't worry too much about Klown's attacks if I were you. I think the real reason he's got it in for you is because you're ripping him a new arsehole in the Testrugby Fantasy Rugby comp.
Keep it up bud, but just know that the Lightbringers are coming for you!

"Coetzee was chased out of the Cape because his team had been labelled the “Wall of Cape Town” such was his focus on defence, along with his inability to win games once through to the knock-out stages of Super Rugby" ... well, it goes even further than that. Jake White realised his value as a coach and sidelined him by bringing Eddie Jones in to help with the backline coaching.

The Stormers regained some of their former glory only when Proudfoot took over the coaching of the forwards.

Poor Mr. Stick is a sticky problem. He achieved f$$kall in the 15 man format and played only a few games in the 7s setup. Maybe they should give him a white stick.

 Blikkies
You must be kidding.   Stick has a wonderful record of achievement in coaching - he had the magnificent record in coaching the Kings Under 19 team victory in the CC Under 19 competition last year!!!!!   That most distinguished achievement is sufficient to qualify him to be backline coach for the Springboks.
The bar was set as low is it could be - but that is not the issue here.  He is a genious compared to what Loubscher achieved under Meyer.

To question - yo have to marvel at how some folks are so completely off the pace. Like ou maaaikie and politics! Nobody can say I don't do my utmost to school ou maaaaikie!
Look the only folk happy about all this are the anc, rooiwit and kbbs. I am afraid the sleeping giants SA will remain asleep indefinitely. Maybe an occasional flah of brilliance will remind of former glories - like being the number 1 team prior to isolation. As for rooitwit he will always need correcting. Somethings are a given constant

Beeno, I don't see too many Kiwis celebrating the Boks apparent problems. From my point of view if Boks go downhill this is a problem for us too as we need competition.
Also, how quickly some "bok supporters" abandon their team. CC is the worst. Why he even bothers to post on this rugby site is a mystery as bad mouthing your team & everyone else is a cowards response. Time for wee CC to man up We can only hope he is capable - one must remain optimistic
