This kid needs to be brought into the Bok equation when the experiment of Jean at 13 has failed. Taute is out for a few months and I am not big on stats defining a player, I base my views on what I see and I see plenty in this kid, but the stats back this up as well.

Considering he has missed a game or two, I see that after week 15, he is sitting in 8th spot overall in the metres gained stats, having gained 1223m. Gear leads the table with 1453m. Interestingly Goosen sits 4th with 1278m, showing why he should replace ponderous Morne on his return from injury.

Then we have the line breaks stats where Taute is placed 3rd with 14 line breaks, Gear leads the list with 16.

Does this paint the picture of a player that only runs straight and is all guts nothing else???? Reality is, this kid is quick, powerful and a nicely balanced runner with swerve and a good step......a prerequisite to gaining all those meters and making all those line breaks in a side that has won all of one match that he has played in. Not to mention the fact that he has played 15, 13 and 12 this season.

Get Goosen at 10 and Taute at 13 for the Boks in the next few months, I say

I agree whole-heartedly with you here.  You must however, also add Jordaan - but after last night's disaster not Pat Howard.

How pathetic Mike, after one poor team performance you now have made your mind up on Howard, not to mention the fact that Jordaan was one of the worst Baby Boks on the day - get a grip man

Here Mike this might help you a little with Howard, not to mention the fact that Meyer invited him to the Bok training camp - he must be really shit to have Meyer acknowledge him!!!!

Taute is not in the top 15 for  linebreaks. Jantjies and JP are, however, 12 and 13 in terms of missed tackles....enjoy.

I had this problem. Maybe try copying to word first.

By the way do you see that Josh is at 4 most missed tackles and Alberts at 7 and speisies at 8!!!!!!  Not that is pretty worrying.  We need Schalk and Duane.

Click on Edit Post, then just drag the one corner smaller.

Ive done it a couple of times.

Regarding Taute, In my opinion, he plays a very similar game to JF.

Great eye for the gap, fierce tackler, a bit raw but has all the ingredients to succeed at the highest level.

Yes, Taute reminds me of Fourie, but has a higher workrate which is a bonus and yes added advantage is he has a boot on him, kicks for poles as well

Also a better step. Nice burst of excelleration too.

I suspect Jean is going to have a great series agains the english s Taute will just have to watch and learn from the master - as it should be. Jean has a lot to teach him.

Taute has made all of 7 clean line breaks.

Cheetahs 1

Hurricanes 1

Sharks, Stormers, Crusaders, Cheetahs second match, Bulls......all zero.

Brumbies 2

Chiefs  1

Blues 1

Reds 1

Force  0

This comes straight from the ESPN Scrum match stats, the best source I know. Seven line breaks explains why he is not on the chart.

You can choose to believe who you like Sapp. I'm encouraged that you have tried a quantitative approach, so far be it from me to dictate your sources. I would just point out, however, I have two sources not one: ESPN Scrum (the gold standard) and rugbystats.com an Aussie source. You by contrast have an unnamed source that puts little gold cups next to players.

I was not looking up the stats, I read little into them generally. Stumbled on this one on the SS board, where a poster was making a point about Brussouw. Its a kiwi based company - when it comes to matters rugby, its best to stick with the Kiwi's I'd say. These stats mirror Taute's form this year, they make perfect sense

Except Dave has no idea of the source of those stats, he copied them from another post on SS then asked the poster where they came from.

Poohie please stop lying what is wrong with you man. Where have I stated that the research was mine. How pathetic are you, yellow belly.......I'm waiting on my original challenge wet kiwi, be a man and prove me wrong. Hell you even run off to trace my actions on another site, how f....ing pathetic is that. Are you that desperate to show me up.

Sadly piwi, you will find I have nothing to lie about - whats the point really, its just rugby and opinions after all........but good to see the lengths you go to, snapping at my heels and you have the audacity to call me a maggot. I'm no maggot piwi, judging by your behaviour I'd say I was your worst nightmare.

Hows that itch Al, or is it piwi, no yellow belly sits but so does easy pickings.

You found your evidence yet or are you still scratching?

True and I haven't even raised the question of how many runs this chap has tried. It seems to me every time he gets the ball he blunders forwards. One wonders if it  ever occurs him to pass the ball. In the Reds match for example he ran 16 times, the next most was 11 on either team. So his 72 metres look impressive, until one realizes in 16 tries it's a lower gain per run than Mapoe who made 23metres in 5 tries.

Tricky stuff this stats.

Funny that you are the only person who seems to think that all he does is blunder forward, much like Fourie's test tries amounting to poor opposition or simple run ins?

Ag Dave I have never found much value in numbers. Look at all the mopes who thought CDO's were a great investment. Best I can make out most of Ireland and Iceland bought this scam, along with lots of lawyers.

Right now after just a few games, I'm viewing Taute as just the latest incarnation of your Wailing Murray/ Louis Ludik fantasy.  Beef to be carved by smarter players.

Fair enough, but you seem very alone in your take on the bloke. Meyer has him in his sights and rightly so. Murray was a good centre but injuries dictated. Ludik started well but failed to make the grade and I conceded that.

Taute is far better than these two, he is up there with Lambie and Goosen

I have a problem.  I like very much what i have seen of Taute - especially when he was playing at full back.   At center he is being let down by the poor team environment in which he has to operate - which limits his effectiveness somewhat.

He is definitely better than Fourie and Murray in the speed department..   Fourie started off reasonably well - but over the years slowed down badly - Murray always was a slow cart horse type of player - strong, but slow and hence ineffective.   Injuries did play a role - but in essence Murray was too slow to be an effective center.

I would like to see Taute at 13 alongside a good backline operation.   That is not possible in the Lions environment - where Jantjies has some spotty form also due to the poor Lions performance environment -and also not in the case of ten men rugby apparently punted by Meyer.    With the present half back screnario no outside backs can perform from an attacking perspective - so we must look in this case only on the defensive perspective - and there Taute is a definite improvement on the slow and ineffective Pietersen when it comes to no 13 selection.

By the way Saffex - you said earlier that Pietersen has not lost speed.  I will tell you right here that De Villiers will beat Pietersen by 10 meters in a 100 meter race - end of story.

Now back to Taute - good athlete and strong one as well - pity about his injury.   However, it is not yet proven conclusively that he should be at 13.  I in fact believes that in the few games Jordaan played for the Sharks he was better in that position than Taute - so it is a bit of a toss up. between the two.   Jordaan did perform better than for instance Howard in the game on Monday - but Howard also have a possibility of improvement that could come later.   I see the future no 13 position as potentially the best psoition for Jordaan - with Taute and potentially also Howard as contenders - but I think all of those players are very young and could develop much further in future.  Whose to say which of the three are in fact will in two years time be the best candidates for 13?

What I have seen thus far seems to confirm Jordaan as the better prospect - he is definitely faster than Taute or Howard, but the jury is out on that one..

Taute has played most of his rugby at 13, he played there at school and for the Baby Boks. I dont believe Jordaan was any better than Taute at 13. Jordaan is def an option, but Taute is better, because of his physicality.

We have a few options at 13 moving forward. They are Taute, JJ.Engelbrecht, Jordaan, Howard, Dries Swanepoel (he is coming back from an injury, was Serfontein's centre partner at Grey Bloem, regarded as the best pair the school has had, they had Goosen at 10, he and Serfontein have been contracted by the Bulls) and JP du Plessis of the Stormers.

One kid just out of school that was raved about in Natal is SA Schools 13, Tyler Fisher, hopefully he comes through as well.

For now I would have used JP or JJ at 13, for I dont believe Jean is up to it anymore
