New Hurricanes captain Dane Coles in doubt after training injury

Last updated 12:45, February 24 2016

  • GETTY IMAGES

Hurricanes captain Dane Coles is under an unexpected injury cloud ahead of the Super Rugby opener against the Brumbies in Canberra.

Hurricanes hooker Dane Coles has injured a calf muscle at training, putting him in doubt to lead the team in their Super Rugby opener.

The All Black pulled up late at training in Wellington on Wednesday, just hours after he had been named to captain the team against the Brumbies in Canberra on Friday night.

"It looks like if training went 10 minutes shorter we would have been alright, but it appears at this stage he might have strained his calf muscle, so we'll have to wait and see what the medical staff come up with," a disappointed Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd told media.

"I haven't ruled out the fact he might get on the plane [Thursday] yet, but it doesn't look likely.

"You've just got to roll with what you get dealt with."

Boyd suggested young backup Leni Apisai would get his first start for the Hurricanes if Coles was ruled out.

I think the report on Coles by ABF relates to a later injury in training after the team announcement - which you quoted.
Tha nks for the Highlanders team - which I will update asap.

There are still 11 teams outstanding -
    *   two in respect of games on Friday; and*   nine in respect of games on Saturday.
I would try and keep my eyes open for updating purposes, but hope help would be forthcoming from other members.

Strange Bulls side.....lacks a grunt lock......and I don't understand how Mastriet can make the side ahead of Ulengo on the wing, the find of the CC last season.

Jenkins should be ahead of Hattingh at lock, with Hattingh at 7

Schoeman should be ahead of Brummer at 10

We are now having only 3 teams not reporting - they traditionally announce their teams on Thursdays - The Stormers, the Lions and the Sharks.  They should be known in about 5 hours from now.
Help is always welcome - so keep it up.

    Lions . . .

15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Howard Mnisi, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Warren Whiteley (captain), 7 Warwick Tecklenburg, 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Andries Ferreira, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Robbie Coetzee, 1 Ruan Dreyer

Substitutes: 16 Malcolm Marx 17 Dylan Smith, 18 Jacques van Rooyen, 19 Robert Kruger, 20 Ruan Ackermann, 21 Jaco van der Walt, 22 Harold Vorster, 23 Rohan Janse van Rensburg

Harold Vorster not starting means I have to go back and redo my Fantasy teams . . . and choose a new captain!

     Thanks Rooinek
    Sharks and Lions Updated.
I am not going to change my selections substantially.  All I am going to do is to put Vorster on the bench and put Andre Esterhuizen as a starter, because theya re playing against the Kings.

I am totally baffled by the Stormers selection.  Putting Malherbe on the bench is crazy - but I think it may be a strategy to bring him in for the second half of the game and then put extra pressure on the Bulls front row.  Not going to change my fantasy selections though - props just last about half the games in any event.

Why is Odwa playing and not Sithole on the wing? Except that I'm delighted by the Sharks team, and interested to see the Du Preez brothers in action.

I can't wait for Super Rugby, some actual decent quality rugby since the RWC!!

Agreed Mike that I'd have had Malherbe starting, but Koch is certainly an able replacment. It could be the best thing to happen for the boks for ages that the two Stormers second rowers Etzebeth and PSDT will play together all year, they could really build an understanding.

Cannot really explain that selection.   Am looking forward to the games too.  Unfortunately the stampkar rugby of the NH is of the worst things that can happen to spectators.

nice job mikey and co, this thread is extremely handy for me this time round, cos i havent kept track of any non NZ teams, so keep up the good work,

teams for foxsport and testrugby all ready to roll.

due to the saffa like results my uzumaki clan have produced on the fantasy circuit the last few years, the bigwigs upstairs have decided on a change of fantasy tactics.
any player i pick can only be selected once across the two fantasy comps.
only exceptions will be to accommodate the salary cap,

gl peeps, i got a good feeling that this is the year of the fox, the dreaded 9 tail fox,
