I've been rewatching the game. We weren't as bad a I thought on first viewing. I think we had things under control and could have closed out...until the intercept try. That unleashed 9 minutes of chaos where the game slipped beyond us, and it all came down to one bad pass, two missed tackles and our narrow defense being exploited, this time fatally, for the 4th or 5th time in the game.

57:30 Libbok throws the intercepted pass

60th minute skew lineout throw, followed by a free kick against us at the scrum for "no gap"

63rd minute Arendse catches White's crappy box kick but loses it. Wallabies takes it wide quickly, Moodie and Kriel both miss Wright, Manie fails to keep outside on Wilson, try.

66th minute Aus again gets easily wide of the narrow Bok defense through JOC's skip pass and Jorgenson runs away, steps Libbok and scores.

A 9 minute blitzkrieg and game over - the final Wright try was of academic concern.

Outside of that it was a pretty competitive game.

There were some other things we can point to, like the certain try we blew at minute 48 when Grant got outside the inside defense, we had a 3 on 1 outside, but Kriel inexplicably came back inside onto Grant instead of staying outside to collect his offload, managing to actually collide with him. Had he stayed outside, we get the ball wide, we need to beat one defender with plenty of attackers. Beautifully manufactured opportunity with Esterhuizen's dummy run pinning the 10 & 12, and Grant getting into the space wide of them. Why Kriel ran a supporting line back towards the defense instead of outside into the space, who knows, but that was an almost comical end to the perfect opportunity to seal the game.

Yep I never got the impression Oz were actually beating us - it was all about us completing fucking up - those poor passes behind or to no one, we created opportunities only to fluff them close to the line

I also never understood why that clear forward pass for the one Oz try was never reviewed

@Dave,

I thought they did review the first one and BOK clearly says its back out the hands which was total BS.

@Pakie,

Agreed, mostly. Our ability or lack thereof to win our own lineouts and drive any mauls was a huge factor. Maybe more time on lineouts and maul attack/defence and less time on Tony ball offload everything is called for.

Neither did I, that is why I was so angry.

They played far too loose. The first try went straight between Ox and Eben. Supposed to be out first choice players that can't close a gap.

Manie and Williams try way to much rugby and we kept coughing the ball over.

Did Bongi get any of his line outs? Again, it was the old firm Bongi, Eben and Mostert. Suppose to be the best in the business.

If you look where Aus strike from, within their own half, often from their 22. Really week defense and no scrambling.

Willemse suppose to be the Gaza of rugby but he offered nothing. When he got the ball he chicken stepped into tackles and coughed the ball up.

He also got easily beaten on the shoulder for a poor attempted tackle to make the score way worse.

Why on earth did the keep playing the blind side.

When they did go wide the run skew and no-one straightening

We also blew many opportunies, and O'Tief blew one for us.

Minute 38:55 we're hot on attack 10m out with a penalty advantage, PSDT carries in, lays it back perfectly. As Grant gathers to play on, O'Tief blows for the penalty. Why? We were dominant on attack.

44:50 we're 5m out, PSDT attempts to pick the ball up in the ruck but knocks it.

48:00 we blow a clear try as I mentioned on my other thread with Kriel coming inside and colliding with Grant while acres of space lay open outside

52:25 we attack out from our own 22, Australia is stretched with one defender left wide while we have three support runners inside, but Arendse's pass goes behind Willemse

By the way, I'll have a look again but my impression was the Bongi did nothing of value after coming on.
