 A friend of mine who has no interest in rugby recently visited Cape Town where he bumped into Eben and family. My mate can't speak more highly of him, went onto say that Eben is humble and made him feel that he was the one who is special, not the other way around. Sounds like there's an enormous amount of ignorance being sprayed about the man in this forum.

Denny there is some good in most people...sadly people tend to harp on peoples faults more so than good sides.

Eben just needs to grow up and I'm sure he will...he grew up on the wrong side of town, I believe but that is not his fault and now has a chance in life...a man's character is tested when these challenges of success are adapted...it is so easy to unfairly judge some one in circumstances that are foreign to most of us.

He has his load to carry and I believe he will change as he matures and stop behaving like a hooligan...at least he is not as bad as our Shark hooker who barneys in low life pubs and strikes women.

It is almost impossible to judge a person based on what you see on the field, on camera, at a charity event etc etc. Prominent individuals are well versed on how to behave when in the public eye. So you can never read too much in to their behavior. 
By all accounts Bakkies Botha is one of the nicest guys you could meet, but on the field he was aggressive and basically an a$$hole! 
Rooi, if what Moz has provided was typed by you, I have to say I am a wee bit surprised that you could be so short sighted. For example, I am sure his growth spurt could be attributed to that time in a young mans life when he grows hair in new and exciting places.

He's a friggin rugby player ... the team's enforcer ... he's supposed to be physical and abrasive ... he suppose to be in your face  ... he's suppose to force his will upon you and have you trembling in your jockstrap ... 
That my dear Sebastien is his job ... it's the very reason he's been selected ... the very reason he reigns supreme across the globe as the best in the business.
Why, would you prefer he spread the love ... with a motivational speech or two ... while reprimanding the naughty boys on the pitch for their aggressive behaviour?
Perhaps you should look for a non violent sport. One where the boys don't come off smelling bad ... with cuts and bruises ... with broken cheek bones and shattered jaws ... wrapped up in bloody bandages.

EE's family, if heard correctly come from Eastern European origin in ancestry...I think Czech or Pole if I'm not mistaken. There is toughness in these people and they can be very rough.

Anyway it's not important where you come from that matters, it's where you end up that counts and besides I've met decent guys from Eastern Europe, Dr Win will bear me out...the Poles have decent people and were stalwards that helped us in WW2.

But I think Etzebeth is Czech in origin.

You are all carrying on as though Etzebeth is a complete loose canon that gives away countless penalties and spends hours in sin bins! There have been been very few issues lately regarding overly aggressive behavior or ill discipline from him. He is already playing his "enforcing" role like a mature and seasoned pro! On top of being arguably the best no.4 lock in world rugby. 

 Eben is a class act in every way.
I hope he continues on as he has and doesn't listen to the stupidity posted above.



 

CC you're right...rugby is not for sissy boys but he still needs to take some control...and yes great Bakkies was no angel and never moonlighted in the back-line as his partner in arms did when he passed his prime.

Sebastien was no sissy too...ask any poor Kiwi bird who met this giant on the field.

Another was Mamuka Gorgodze, the Lelos player probably the toughest rugby man in the modern game...one who got one over Bakkies in the French Club challenges...Ceradunce will fill you in there...remember seeing it on you tube.

Incidentally I love boxing and did box at junior school in the Cape...then we moved to Natal where they do not box at school...all Irishmen love to fight you know...we'll soon see it...we certainly are not p us sy cat tails but some order of control is necessary to get the best of your opponent...there's a difference between a Roberta Duran, Rocky Marciano and Sugar Ray and Mohammed Ali  you know...good fighters versus good boxers...in the end it's the control that takes the prize

 

 I have heard only positive things about Etzebeth.  His best friend in the team of the Stormers is Frans Malherbe.   Malherbe had an excellent family background and he is a very nice person.  If Etzebeth was not of the same kind - they would not have been friends.  Frans's father met Etzebeth and he spoke very highly of him.   They also know De Jager and have the same high opinion of him.   Big guys with kind  hearts it seems to me.        

Yeah, Ol Maaikie you're right...big guys and tough guys are usually as gentle as kittens when they are not on the field or ring...they don't need to puff themselves up because there stance is enough and only use their strength in things that are right and wack show off jerks that bully.

What I've seen generally in life is exactly that...big guys with kind hearts...

 Eben has sufficient self control already in place ... he's not a dirty player AT ALL ... he plays hard and does so with a lot of passion.
I'm more than happy with EVERYTHING he does on the field.
In fact ... I wish we had a few more Ebens on the park.

 The so called handbag incident between Lood and Eben actually proves the point. A bit of wrestling and shoving in a full contact sport. It could have gotten ugly, but both of them controlled their aggression and no punches were thrown. The Sharpe incident a few years ago is the only real blemish on his record, and that was a joke.  "Shaddow headbutt " with no intent and no contact.  Card and a ban?GO EBEN!!!

 Seb I am not so sure about the origin of the Etzebeth family.  The first Etzebeth who came to SA was borne in Flanders, Belgium in 1804 and died in Villiersdorp in 1874.  The surname was sometimes spelled as Etsebeth, but over the last century the spelling was corrected to Etzebeth.   However, I still think there is a connection with Hungary somewhere in history.   Flanders was for centuries part of the Holy Roman Empire of which Hungary was also a part (so was Bohemia and Slovakia).   In Budapest is a famous bridge over the Danube - which is called the Etzebeth bridge.   This bridge was called after the Empress Elizabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary  - wife of Emperor Franz Joseph - and the Hungarian version of her name is in fact Etzebeth.       

I don't remember where I heard the origin of Eben's family...might have been Hungary as well but I think it was Czech...some Eastern Block country.

PS... No Mike, my missus was home for only 2 months...we tried to take our minds off this sad situation for a while and went to various places in the Berg and coast but never as far as Southern Cape coast and had to leave her mother in the hands of her useless husband...she had to go back...when she arrived her mom was in a critical condition...the old man neglected her so bad...missed her medication and was horrified...even hardly any food in the fridge.

This is an ongoing and I'm afraid we will have to ride out together...we are just fortunate that we have a strong relationship...I guess life has it trials but then again it also has it's blessings. I believe there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

 I can't recall the origin of the family Etzebeth exactly, but it was definitely East Block. Hungary,  Czech , Russia or Romenia...in that order. If you Google it now, you get 100's of Eben results and nothing about the family. 

Thanks Draad...it puzzled me but I heard it or read it somewhere...ironically the Etzebeths are almost so Afr rikaa ner inbred...nothing wrong with that...except oupa denied his origin in case he was called a communiss under the past government.

Anyway there is good in every nation, even the Welsh although a certain forum member has done his best to dispel this fact...Irishmen and Welshmen are so similar that they don't want to understand each other.

Ancestry is an intriguing (sic) past time...especially in famous SA's...my wife says Ryan Kankowski is definitely from Russian or Polish background (he looks like a Russian...they are good looking but their women are beautiful especially those who have an undisclosed aristocratic background which was kept secret after Lenin took control) but Jewish (nothing wrong with that) and in Russia there are many Kankos.

He looks a bit like a  Don Cossak to me....fierce. Be that as it may, how anybody can miss the fact that he is a great rugby player is beyond belief.

 Rooi knows full and well that he is a great player and he saw the potential way back when he made that post. It was a dig at the WP and their supporters. IMO, Eben is our best player and one of the best in the world, regardless of position. His dad and uncles were rof back in the day, but those were different times. I've met one of his cousins and either his younger brother or another cousin. Both nice and decent blokes and both a bit embarrassed by the family rep. He would be my first choice for Bok captain, unless he really don't want it. If Alistair did not offer the captaincy to him, it can only be because of conservatism or to prevent the perception of WP bias. He should be captain soon.
