Any coach who selects Matfield and Spies must have his head read.    Something is seriously amiss in those two cases.   If the combined did any work - it would represent half of what any other forward did.

Matfield was a serious joke at lock and Spies a sinister one at 8.   Van Zyl made a complete hash of his job - a really poor service in evidence.   Generous penalty machines were Stegmann and Matfield.   Giving away 9 points in a low scoring game is just too generous on their part.

And did Hattingh make a serious mess of the last try-scoring opportunity.  Shows you need brains if you want to play competitive rugby.

There is a serious problem with Jan Serfontein today.  He was poor in ball carries - his defense was chaotic.  There is absolutely no reason why a center missed more than half of all his tackle attempts.  Since some won't believe me - here is his stats for the game:

Serfontein0/000/5/71100004/5

Once a player produces zero of value in the game in other aspects as well - we must start asking serious questions about his potential Springbok selection.

Hatting was okay but man he should have been aware enough not to let his hand stray into touch. Cost bulle the game.Mellet, matfiled, spiesies and stegsies were all useless. Ludeke must go.

Remove all of Mellett, Visagie, Matfield, Stegmann, Spies, JJ and Basson.
The few top performers were Labuschange, Pollard, Kriel and Hougaard.

Dave is going to have a fit - but Serfontein today was a disaster as well.   I am beginning to have serious doubts about him.

I quoted the Serfontein stats above since I was seriously perturbed by Serfontein's performance yesterday - especially since he was not really better against the Stormers the previous week.
Lets look at two further issues here, namely
*   the fact that Serfontein's performance in the two games thus far in Super 15 was sub-par;  and
*   the fact that Nonu was Serfontein's direct opponent and compare his performances against Nonu yesterday - as against what happened in the Nonu case last year in the at home game of the Blues against the Sharks.
Serfontein in the Stormers game last week:-
Serfontein0/001/5/102401018/3
Serfontein in the Hurricanes game yesterday:-
Serfontein0/000/5/71100004/5
Lats week's performance was better than this week - but only marginally so.
*   Ball carries meters gained
        Stormers -  10 carries =  25 meters (ie 2,5 meters per carry)        Blues      -   7 carries  =  11 carries (ie 1,58 meters per carry)
*   Defense
        Stormers -  Tackles 8 made 3 missed = Missed tackle ratio  27,27        Blues       - Tackles 4 made 5 missed = Missed tackle ratio  55,56
*   Defenders beaten
          Stormers -  1          Blues       - 0
Nonu against the Sharks - 2014

In the Blues-Sharks game last year Nonu's direct opponent was Jordaan - a player who normally plays at 13 and definitely is not a candidate for Springbok selection at 12.   Lets look at Jordaan's stats in that game compared to the stats of Serfontein yesterday:-
 Jordaan0/001/3/33610019/1
There were two serious differences here, namely -
*   in defense on that day Jordaan "owned" Nonu and it was so bad that Nonu lost possession twice as a result of the deadly tackles of Jordaan on him; and
*   Jordaan broke through Nonu's defense once in that game - something Serfontein never did yesterday.
My argument is - if Jordaan can defend very well against Nonu - why can Serfontein not do better?
The above is just not good enough.   In my opinion if Serfontein is to remain a candidate for Springbok selection - he will have to do  much better than he did in the last two games.

Mike your own success rate is 50 per cent, scarcely better than Steppie's tackling today.  You got half the problem right....the part that points out Step can't beat tackles and has an abysmally low metres per run stat.
The part you flubbed was to suggest Jordaan,  a nice runner in space but a feeble tackler, is an alternative. Have you forgotten Robbie Fruean carrying him like a handbag....have you forgotten Read running over the top of him leaving him on the deck while Read sealed the Sharks S15  semi fate?

You are both wrong. The bulle are a dysfunctioal team with Ludeke at the helm. The best thing for Jan and JJ would be for them to play for the Cheetahs etc. Rememeber how Sadie came good. Both JJ and Sadie were doing great whe palying in the Cape.Jan showed some decent passes and I dont beleive those stas re his tackles.
I have to say no other player in SA history has had such a bad effect on our rugby as matfiled. To think he is still buggering up sides at close to 38 years old. The mind boggles.
Spies is absolutely useless and he is the captain nogal. Stegman offers very little and Mellet is a fat slug.
What ahs happed to the mercurial van Zyl at the bulle? He was looking so goodehilst at the Cheetahs. The bule simply are messing up good palyers.Strauss, Nyankane and Labuschagene shoudl have stayed at the Cheethas. Thier good efforts are being ruined by the three uselss palyers mentioned.
A hall decent Bulle side would have slaughtered these pap hurricanes.
We ahve two ver ysubstandard coaches operating at major franchises. Ludeke and Alistair coetzee. The Stormers thankfully have Smal at the hlem and Alistair is going. The bulle had better act fast as i notice the stands are pretty empty and they dont want to go back to the bad old days.
Meanwhile the deluded kbbs are trying ahrd to convince themselves the blowhard hurricanes are a great side!!!! Man its a total comedy!!
What the yshould be concerned about is the lack lustre performance of so many ab backs.
A question since when is putting the ball totally skew allowed or pulling a scrummie into a ruck? The down under ref also got some bad calls against the Bulle - as Spiesies correctly said in his post match speech.

So Dr Moz and ou maaaike try and see context! Jan would be fine in a decent side and JJ is of course a wing.
Hougaard certainly punches above his weight.

You do not read anything properly and then goes on wrong allegations all the time.   What did I say about Jordaan?   I said he is NOT a candidate as an inside center.   Can you read anything properly?   I merely pointed out what he did to Nonu and what Serfontein was unable to do  and you went on the rampage.
Incidentally Jordaan made two poor tackles in three years and those stuck in your mind - the rest you conveniently forgot or do not want to admit.    Serfontein defence is basically on par with that of two of your favourites - the useless Steyns - another fact you do not admit as well.
When are you going to start admitting facts?

I have said the same about the center scenario at the Bulls for years - it is the graveyard for centers and that is where they go career-wise whilst playing for the Bulls.
Now let me go to another topic and that is what is wrong with the Bulls backline.  In 2012 Matfield was appointed as the Bulls attack coach and since they have made no change - one assumes he still is.   Can you now understand why their backline attacks are putrid?
The only bright sparks in the game yesterday were -
*   Kriel and Pollard in the backline; and*   Labuschagne among the forwards.
What people don't always appreciate is that aside from his ball-carries and many tackles, the work Labuschagne does as to slowing down of opposition balls in breakdown situations and his ball protection at breakdowns are  invaluable for any team he plays in.   That work is seen, but not appreciated by most people watching games.  By some distance still the best 7 in SA.
Insofar as Matfield and Spies are concerned - as long as these two are in the Bulls team - the team will lose constantly.   They are just plain useless and a handicap for the team.

Ou maaaikie its not only wee amtfiled and spieies that are uselewss. Stegman is over the hill and mellet sub par dispite ou snapster getting it wrong.
Nyankane, Strauss, Hattingh, Du Plessis Liebenberg and  Labuschagne are fine as is Greyling.
Van zyl is a good scrummie but being messed up. Jan man if he had been in a decent culture he would be doing much better. JJ isa wingPollard, Kriel and Hougard are fien and Basson is not used properly.Give this team to a Brendon Venter and watch the difference. Ludeke and the malignat influence of victor are the biggest poble, Why doesnt victor retire for good! He has most people fooled aso quit while you are ahead.
Perceptions are a hard to change. People still tak of having to takeon the big bulle pack so strong etc. Tripe the pack that started was pap. Unfortunately S[iesies and matfile were never subbed but even the subbing of stegsies and Mellert improved matters and the bulle forards started to get on top.
Anybody not seeing the problems is as blinkered as any half baked kbbs ( and thats no exageration)!!!!!

Let me go through that Bulls team who played yesterday:-
15  Kriel - an exceptional talented player.  Great future14  Basson - a speedy sort with substantial defense problems13  Engelbrecht - a wing trying to play at center for the wrong union12  Serfontein - two sub-standard games in a row proves that he is not up to standard for the game the Bulls wants him to play - he should move to another     union - his career is being ruined by the Bulls11  Hougaard -  definitely a scrumhalf - was good under high balls10  Pollard     - top class flyhalf  9  Van Zyl    -  Disappointed whilst at the Bulls  8  Spies       -  Still the same - built like Tarzan, played rugby like Jane 7  Labuschagne -  Still one of the best 7's in SA 6  Stegmann -  Useless reputation player 5  Matfield   -   From a rugby perspective he is physically as strong as Ouma Matfield 4  Du Plessis -  Top class player 3  Nyakane   -  Fine prop 2  Strauss    -  Top class player 1  Greyling   -   Fine prop
Priority replacements - Ouma Matfield, Jane Spies and Useless Stegmann.
Players where  huge improvement is necessary,  JJ Engelberecht, Serfontein and Van Zyl.

Sorry Moz but anybody should see the bulle are all at sea with a hopeless coach ruining them. Never see such a weak bulle pack. This effects the backs as does their trying to turn Jan into a crashballer. he was NEVER that sort of player. Van Zyl was a sharp excellent running scrummie. JJ starred on the wing for the Stormers. Sadie likewise at center for the Stormers. The evidence is overwhelming

Mike as per usual you are speaking complete and utter shit. For a start get your stats straight, Jan only missed 3 tackles and was no better or worse than Nonu on the day.

I see Moz is speaking utter shit regarding JJ, who happened to be the best centre on the field on the day, completely out playing Conrad Smith once again.

v/Zyl was piss poor, he is a far better player than that. Hougaard needs to move back to 9.

Jessie Kriel at 15, showed his class - this guy has Bok written all over him.

Pollard was good as was Labascagne.

Matfield was once again a passenger as was Spies.

What Hattingh was thinking about with regards to that last try is beyond me after being put into space perfectly by JJ

 Dave
The stats I provided was the initial ones on ESPN scrum as you could see from the quotation I listed.   The latest figure looks much better - but it still is no indication of a top class player.
I beg to differ from you - Engelbrecht on the day was ineffective.   However, I agree whole-heartedly with Beeno.   Ludeke is the reason for the ultra-poor performances of the Bulls backline.   Center playing in those circumstances carries a heavy load of negative rubbish and neither Serfontein nor Engelbrecht will show optimal performance under those conditions.  I am sorry for them - but their performances remains seriously questionable in the two games played.   They would both do their careers a world of good by moving out of that environment.

If JJ was ineffective what were Nonu, Conrad Smith and Jan then?

So stop speaking utter shit.......its all relative.......JJ was the best centre on the field with limited opportunity......he gained 47m, made one clean break, beat one defender and set up Hattingh for his try.......hardly ineffective now is it?
