Put Joost at one. Kick out Gregan whose only real claim to fame is along career - this guy passed well but loafed most of the time.

 Any selection of "Top Players" will always be subjective.  Who do you really leave out and who do you place before who and why.  There should be clear cold criteria with no emotional baggage.
And try as I may I cannot even agree with myself.  You see, some of these guys played a different era when the game was slower and there was more brain and less brawn..
I like Marshall as a person, I liked his style of play and his tenacity but I'd have to go with the Wardad on this one and then I'd even make Sid 4 and FdP 5 - As much as I liked FdP there were times when he was of the boil slightly injured, and still played, maybe because there was no one else, who knows. 
 

No problem with #1, #2 or #3 but I would have all of Nick Farr-Jones, David Kirk, Danie Craven and Sid Going before Fourie du Preez.

In my opinion Justin Marshall is right up there with the names I mentioned competing for a top 5 spot.

 I agree with with first three Beeno but Gareth Edwards won by 5 lengths...the greatest player ever let alone scrumhalf...sadly most of you were either too young or not even born then...never seen any rugby player in this class...he was just too brilliant

 The good Dr Craven is surely ahead of Du Preez ? Having only old newsreels to go by makes comparisons more difficult compared to modern day players.

 Lets forget about the amateur era and start with players since 1996 = since the rugby changed drastically since then.   Joost covers both eras and memories fade as a result.  Besides that SA was out of rugby for more than a decade in the 1980's and that could have cut out some players as well.  
So what do you suggest in that scenario. I would not put Fourie du Preez in the top 5 for vey good reason.         

Mike, yes lets forget the amateur part but really, no. Edwards was a freak brilliant player...if born in pro era would have even been greater...I'm sure you watched the British Lions Tour in 1974 or was it 75...I was a young student watching at Newlands in pouring rain at Newlands...that Br Lions side was the BEST rugby side ever...they white washed us completely...the last test we drew but we were skunks...dirty play and the Bok side was at it's best....we SA's could not except defeat to the greatest side ever.

Danie Craven was excellent in his day.......but to rate him in the top 5... ?.
I think we all tend to rate players who excelled in our era.
Many a great player has played the game but to rate one above the other as the best ever is difficult if not impossible.

Biggest rugby cheat would have to be Shalk Burger He also proved to be one of the most courageous players as he fought his way back from injury & at one point almost death. Still, his "bending of the rules" made the mighty McCaw look like a saint.

 Sorry guys you are too young...Sid Going was great but Gareth Edwards was a freak brilliant...every movement was deceptive, fast and positive ...really a freak no 9 ...made Bennett look like Dan Carter and with players like JPR and JJ Williams outside anything could happen, and it did...the best rugby side ever.

However, I am confident that the likes of Beeno will demonstrate they have finally come to recognize Richie has often been unfairly maligned in the past. I like to think that Beeno's knowledge of the game has grown

Burger was in my estimation the biggest. I also think that Bismark was a close second.
Wait for it. I also think Richie was accused of an awful lot of "cheating" but in my estimation he was brilliant. He fought hard and fairly.
Seb......Gareth Edwards was up there with Joost, either one or two in my book.
The game of rugby has produced many greats and I was privileged to sit alongside one such great on a flight from Auckland to Brisbane.
Wilson W who was the  ALL Blacks captain and hooker in the late 60's early 70's. What a great player, a gentleman off the field and had not one bad word to say about anyone.

Danie Craven the first master of the dive pass deserves a mention. In the tests against NZ in 37 the dive pass was so feared by the ABs Craven waved Tony Harris furrher and further out and out....and the AB defence shifted with him leaving a big gap. Through that gap steamed Turner for a stunning try to clinch the first series win.

 The Going brothers bamboozled Samoa using that move .Awesome way to flummox defences eh wot ?

 Well according to this clip Van der Westhuizen was the number 1 Bok 9. Some great scum halves. Du Preez was ranked no. 2.
