The impact of French cuisine on rugby players

There seems to be some players affected by the wonders of French cuisine and trying to get fatter and fatter while playing rugby in France - while some of the others bear up under the strain of succumbing to fattening foods and keep their weight level.
Various of the fattening arch-eaters have been the following:-
*   Gurthro Steenkamp got fatter and fatter in France and was looking more like Proudfoot - while playing sub-standard to poor rugby.  The furst syllable of his name said it all if a slight change in spelling is borne in mind - spell it Girth and it described the situation to a T
*   Fat Fransie Steyn came back from France weighing an outrageous 118 kgs and was so slow and ineffective it was just not funny.  He developed a wacky knee - his knee could just not carry the fat load.   He was told repeatedly to reduce his weight ad is down to 115 kgs according to latest info.  He had extremely poor performance records in Super Rugby for three years running and the Sharks were releived when his contract with SARU ran out and was not renewed.   He is back in France now and my guess is he will be back to 118 kgs plus asap.
*   Drew Mitchell was always a fast and very nimble player weighing circa 109 kgs.  I was shocked by his latest pic in which he seems to be well over 100kgs in weight.   The pic clearly indicates a Fatso - but I may be wrong.   Any idea of what his weight is now?
However, it seems that there is a difference between players - the hard workers and trainees show no very substantial change in weight - the loafers and free-loaders add  weight to an amazing extent

Frans Steyn made a memorable debut for Jake White's Montpellier, helping them to victory over Toulouse in their Top 14 clash on Sunday. 

Although he didn't score any points, the Springbok centre played an influential role in Montpellier's 31-29 triumph at Stade Ernest Wallon. 

The 28-year-old was joined in Montpellier's starting line-up by try-scorer Paul Willemse, Demetri Catrakilis - who added 16 points via three penalties, two conversions and a drop goal - Jannie du Plessis, Robert Ebersohn and Wiaan Liebenberg while Bismarck du Plessis and Jacques du Plessis started on the replacements bench.

In all cases, it cant be an answer telling how an increase of 15 % in TV revenues marks bad developpment for rugby.

Probably just like for many things else, the excellent men have no answer.

 Not keeping Frans in the mix for the WC was a major error....a Frans/Allende combination would have had far more impact than playing the totally invisible, except when he was missing tackles, Kriel.

 Having Fat Fransie in any test is just plain silly.  Fransie had the worst stats - both in attack and defense of any center in SA for three years running on Super 15 level.   His missed tackle ratio was on average 28% and in two years he had the horrible record of 4 line breaks and 16 tackles beaten.
There were enough holiday makers in England in the WC - so why should there have been another of those ?

Having seen Frans play, he is in good shape......no fat on him at all......should he have partnered de Allende in the WC.....no chance in hell.....for one of the few things clueless Meyer did get right was picking de Allende and Kriel as the centre pair....they proved a revelation in their pairing leading up to the WC and were good in the WC.
Perfect foils.....de Allende has strength and creativity....Kriel has blistering pace and great feet....de Allende offers the physicality of Frans but makes far more of an impact........Kriel offers what we saw in JJ in that good year he had for the Boks but is better in that he has a hard edge.
Serfontein is back in great form showing the class that had him win JWC player of the comp...........Frans Venter has been the find of the last two seasons and Mapoe has been in great form.
Its a pity about the injuries to talents like Odendaal and Vorster
Esterhuizen and Janse van Rensburg have shown plenty of promise with their physicality.
We are well placed at centre despite de Allende taking a few games to hit his straps.....class is permanent form temp......as Serfontein has proved

Serfontein has had a few seasons of super rugby to find his feet ... I'm afraid he's still stumbling around in the dark. Really very sad ... he promised so much at junior level ... no more than a solid club player.

Janse van Rensburg has a lot of promise ... but ... he needs to use his limited time on the park to step it up a notch or three ... or he'll end up on the same bench as Serfontein.
Esterhuisen is not test material. A few seasons down the line and still nothing special about him.
Venter is a class act. There is something special about him and I would definitely bring him into the Bok fold.
I think my views on Kriel have been made abundantly clear. Over rated ... simply useless ... and as Dave said ... in the JJ mould.
Mapoe is class ... love this man ... a definite Bok.
So in conclusion ... of the usual length list that Dave provides us with ... only Mapoe, Venter, De Allende, Vorster and Odendaal warrant a closer look.
