A week off to prepare for a home game vs the Lions who had a meat grinder with the Saders and a trip down 6000 ft to the match. This seemed like the moment the Sharks could pounce. I was wrong.
With the Lions sporting a strong scrum, it seems no thought was given to scrumming. Why not start with Adriaanse? And while the Lions were offloading and finding space, the Sharks were seeking contact like heat seeking missiles, usually with ball loss resulting. Then there were  the penalties, particularly at scrum time....devastating.

Of the players many Lions had good games, their front row, Mostert, Jantjies come to mind. Only Willie and Daniels showed any nous for the Sharks. And many reputations were damaged.
JP was awful on defense and generally ineffective
Jordaan just a tackler
Esterhozen must have lost the ball 5 times, slow and ineffective, I would have sent him to the bin for that vindictive tackle on Jantjies
Joe cracked mentally
Reinach is a calamity of poor service and poor decision making
Coenie has to stop if tighthead is his only option, he cost the sharks the game
The du Preez twins are dumb muscle at this stage, and their hands are awful.
This team has regressed massively since White left and it serves them right. He was treated shoddily by the Sharks and they are now rudderless.

There are a number of points where I agree with you,  but also a few where I disagree,  Esterhuizen is to my mind a center in the Francois Steyn style - in other words a totally ineffective player,   The worst contract the Sharks signed this year was with Coenie Oosthuizen.  He is totally ineffective as a prop.
JP and Beast have regressed badly and is not up to standard anymore.
I do not agree with you about Reinach - he was behind retreating forwards and did his job well today.   However, I do not think your prejudice against the guy would ever allow for any objectivity on your part.
The Du Preez twins was the only thing who stood between an even bigger loss then happened,  Dumb Muscle is not an issue with them - they are harder workers than your hero Alberts ever was.

Reinach was kak today. Two turnovers won by the Sharks  in a row and he kicks them away aimlessy. The second one being marked by Lions fullback had me wanting to pull my hair out.

The Sharks once again show no shape or direction, they've been heading south since John Smit took the reins, he's sacking of JW and appointment of Gary Gold is a reflection of a man out of his depth. By now a demoralized team their overseas trip looks doomed to even bigger and more defeats. Is John Smit that stupid not to realise he's picked a pretender in Gold? Even the much maligned Southern Kings are showing more shape and direction than the Sharks.

Yep, the Sharks are pretty much in the same boat as the 2015 Boks. Good team with tons of talent and experience yet under very poor direction. How the hell Gold remained there this year is a complete mystery. This team could be doing a hell of a lot better than they are. Pity really. Mike, I'm with Moz on the Reinach issue. He's had a poor season and has reminded me of Ruan Pienaar for all the wrong reasons. Again, maybe it's the instruction and not the player. Currently even the Kings 9 is looking better, a lot better. Also, I don't think Mr Moz is as set in his ways as we all think. He did give Jantjies the deserved honorouble mention. Currently Marx, Ntabeni and Akker all playing so much better than Strauss. Wonder if Strauss will be starting at 2 for the Boks despite his poor/non-existent showings this year. And Connie, what's happened to that guy?

Coennie has never been a good rugby player.
Not at loosehead and definitely not as a tighthead.
Many of us have been saying so for years.
Not sure what you mean Plum by asking that question? Did you rate him as a class act once ? Surely not.
Meyer took him to the world cup last year and regretted it.
The man's absolutely useless. Why the Sharks bothered to contract him is beyond me.
They seem to be doing a lot of stupid things lately.

the sharks' main problem seems to be Gold,....... the attacking game of the team when they needed it (going 15 points or so down) was pathetic,...... there's no other possible definition,..... it was pathetic,......

having Coenie, Reinach and Joe Pietersen playing shows no clue at all,..... when Pietersen was subbed there was a very clear improvement,.... the new flyhalf (dunno his name) moved the team around the field 10 times better than him,..... joe pietersen has a good boot ,..... but that's all,....... he's cluelesss in every other aspect of the game,...... he could have a go at FB,.... but as flyhalf he's useless

Reinach is playing crap,..... I never rated him but this season he's going even deeper,.... as xavi said, there were 2 turnovers for very clear counterattacks that he kicked away aimlessly that can resume his rugby nous

Coennie's tackling on one of the du Preez twins allowing the Lions' try can also resume his performance,...... it was clear even for the same Gold who subbed him in the 38 minute of the game,...... just before the break

Coetzee left out of Sharks tour squad

Date published: April 10 2016

Springbok flanker Marcell Coetzee has been left out of the Sharks squad to tour New Zealand later this month.

Coetzee, who will join PRO12 side Ulster at the end of the season, went off on a stretcher with a knee injury during Saturday's loss to the Lions in Durban.

The Sharks face the Blues, Highlanders and Chiefs over the next three weeks but for now they look certain to be without Coetzee for some if not all of a tricky tour.

"It's not looking good. He's gone to hospital, he's had a scan… it's not looking great," Gold told Sport24 after Saturday's game.

"We just hope that it's as minor as possible but there does seem to be a little bit of laxness in the knee which does suggest that at very best he won't be ready for next week."

Included in the 27 man squad are front-rowers Chiliboy Ralapelle, Dale Chadwick and Thomas du Toit, all of whom have not yet had a taste of Super Rugby this season, but who all bolster the pack.

They are three of the 16 forwards named to tour, with Director of Rugby Gary Gold and his coaching staff adding 11 backs to the squad.

Sharks squad to tour New Zealand

Forwards: Tendai Mtawarira, Dale Chadwick, Coenie Oosthuizen, Lourens Adriaanse, Thomas du Toit, Franco Marais, Chiliboy Ralapelle, Kyle Cooper, Etienne Oosthuizen, Stephan Lewies, Hyron Andrews, Jean-Luc du Preez, Daniel du Preez, Philip van der Walt, Keegan Daniel.

Backs: Cobus Reinach, Michael Claassens, Joe Pietersen, Garth April, Lwazi Mvovo, JP Pietersen, Odwa Ndungane, Andre Esterhuizen, Paul Jordaan, Willie le Roux, S’bura Sithole.

@CC I thought Coenie had potential. He's never impressed me but what is disconcerting is that he seems to be getting worse. I'm not sure how one goes backwards. Excuse the pun ;) Reinach has serious pace. He's not a good tactician though. Gold is using him completely the opposite way to what he should be. Willie is wasted in that team. To the point where I am starting to doubt him as a player, when two years ago I'd have pegged him as a future great. I worry about the Du Preez twins under Gold too. Screw the Sharks anyway. If they wanna play horrible rugby they don't deserve pity. I wonder if John Smit might be suffering from the same kick/chase/lineout nonsense hangover that worked while he was captain and Gold might be trying to implement that on his behalf. Who knows right? If you put Bok jerseys on the Sharks it will be very hard to tell them apart from the Boks that went to RWC, in terms of game plan. It's fking sad really. I'm glad the Lions taught them a lesson in their own back yard. Question is...will they learn from it?

Coenie does get worse each game.
He started as a loosehead- and looked to be the next Os DuRant. He was very mobile, a skillful ball carrier- and sometimes won more turnovers than specialist fetchers. Overall he had a very high work rate- probably higher than any prop in world rugby/.
Then he injured his neck- and at the Doctors advice moved to tighthead. Since then he has got worse and worse. Outside of the scrum, he makes very little contribution anymore- and inside of the scrum he is a disaster. Even John Smit was a better tighthead than him. He probably should have called it a day after his neck injury/ies. He loses more confidence each game.
Now he is a total liability. Most certainly the worst tighthead in Super18- and probably the worst rugby player in the tournament.

Given neck strength is a major component of prop play, it's hard to see how he could have emerged unaffected from his neck problems. In 2004 and 2005 Schalk was an outstanding fetcher. After his neck injury he was never the same over the ball, even though other aspects of his game continued to improve. Lukas Von Biljon was also a shadow of his former self after his neck problems .....necks are hard to cure

I was one of the first to identify Carthuizen as an inferior clone of Frans Steyn.
I just don't know if it is the players, the coaches or both that insist on the mindless play of looking for contact - or kick away aimlessly and chase.
SA coaches will often say that our backline players just do not have the skills to play an expansive game.  However if players like Wille Leroux and Elton Jantjies have the skills- is it our coaches that can't teach basic skills- or develop a game plan that uses skills.
Most of our creatine donkey backline players- and the coaches are a waste of space

My thoughts as well, however, I believe the problems were always there, even before re-admission, television, because of the amount of rugby at various levels exposes  our flaws.
Ons weet niks.
