The oldest beats the youngest at the Honda Claasic

How old is the world number one right now????  

 A maturing 25.7. But Rory like Tiger and Jack is a generational phenomenon. The top ten has three players in their twenties, six players in their thirties and one in their forties.
The average age is 33, young for a golf top ten.

 Shame Golf isn't rugby.

Well how about soccer. Respected journo Coggin's latest ten best current soccer player list....Messi, Ronaldo Suarez,  Iniesta, Toure, Bale, Lahm, Robben, van Persie and Ibrahinovic....averages out at 30.1.
Oldest player is Ibrahinovic at 33.4. Youngest is Bale at 25.6.

All this in a sport with a higher stamina requirement than rugby....kinda makes you think. As rugby gets more professional ages will go up, not down.  

 Ah so the number 1 ranked golfer is young.....case closed.

I have lost interest in all the ramblings about ages of players.  The story about players getting older means nothing, unless - as Jean de Villiers put it - they train twice as hard as they did when they were younger.
There is no sign that Matfield is doing that - he is slower than he used to be - is physically weaker and he is a nonentity in  the Tight 5, that is reality and the end of the story.
In the case of Bakkies Botha he realized what his deficiencies were and bowed out on his own.
As to Jean de Villiers - I disagreed with you in 2013 - when he had a very good year.  Last year - being a year older - he was sub-standard and that is a fact.  The injury he sustained will not help in his recovery to play acceptable rugby in future - so he is off my list of inside centers as well.
The one player you did not mention is Jannie du Plessis.  He really has been sub-standard this year in scrumming and did squat outside of the scrums.   If a player struggle against props like Mellet and Mienie - then he is really past tense.
