To me it looked like the Brumbies were able to easily hold their scrums steady and deliver the ball at will. Not so the Stormers, where Malherbe was cracked on at least three occasions and was mostly on his knees.
It now appears last year's dominant Stormers scrum left town when Kitshoff caught his flight out of Cape Town.

Balls - to be expected - the scrums were solid - the real disappointment was useless De Jongh at center.

Nah Sio resumed his dominance over the crawling Malherbe. We dominated the lineouts but the Brumbies bossed the scrums.

The Stormers' scrum wasn't that bad and Malherbe put in some big, telling tackles. The scrumming will get better as the pack grow into a unit. I'm not too worried about the pack ATM.

 Draad
Sure he took just one tackle less than Burger and the tackles he took was worth about twice the tackles Burger took - since they took players backwards and put the Brumbies under pressure - making Poc ock less effective than he normally is.

You know a prop is struggling in the scrums when you have to pretend he's a great tackler. In effect Malherbe made 8 and missed 2....van Rensburg made 5 and missed none. And the great tackles were in effect great pushes as he basically scrummied a few chaps back, at times with help. I knew when the commentators remarked on this we would get the bs.

Just a pity he couldn't do the same thing with Sio, who had him on his knees in every scrum. In fact his position on his knees promotes the collapsed scrum every time...pretty soon one of the refs is going to apply this part of Law 20.
Twisting, dipping or collapsing. Front row players must not twist or lower their bodies, or pull opponents, or do anything that is likely to collapse the scrum, either when the ball is being thrown in or afterwards.

Sanction Penalty Kick

There was one penalty kick given insofar as scrumming is concerned and that suddenl;y let to a whole bunch of lecturing from you.   Have you nothing better to do than to try and whip a dead horse.  We all by now know that you are so biased that what you wrote is absolute crap in respect of most players.   Was Malherbe's 2 missed tackles tackles "missed tackles" and not missed assignments as you wrote elsewhere.   So one has to assume the two missed tackles of Burger is also "missed assignments",
Well done to you in getting things wrong once again by coming up with tripe.

IIRC 2 of Malherbe's tackles resulted in turnovers for the Stormers.

Fair enough. Nothing wrong with his play in the loose. And he is very good in the lineouts being a relatively tall prop. As I posted many years ago tall props are  a big lineout advantage.
But for a tighthead it all comes down to scrumming....and we have now seen Marais, the Beast and yesterday Scott Sio put him under enough pressure to force a collapse. He will be a target in the RC.
But Marcel also has a problem, he scrums up....scrum after scrum.

Not nearly the finished product yet. I had high hopes for him and Koch, but both of them will need to work on their scrummaging. Potential weaknesses...as for VdM, I'm a bit biased against him for personal reasons, so the less I say, the better.

There is no way that Malherbe scrumming cannot improve - but even at his present level it was nothing worse than that of Jannie in his hay-day.  He never collapsed and went back at jet-speed as was the case with Jannie.  So why not be fair and stop your prejudice against the player.
He could not help it that in the end he was prefered to Jannie du Plessis - same as De Jager was regarded as better than Matfield.   Your prejudice should by now be gone and we should look at the future - not the past.

Actually unlike you I'm looking at the present. And I'm concerned about what I see.
Draad I gather you have some personal dealings with Marcel and don't like him....it might be a bit fairer to provide some limits.

I also look at the present and future not at the past.  However, what is different in our approach is that in the past you never criticized some favourites of yours and try and justify them.   At present you continually criticize some players you took a dislike to in the past because they threatened the selection of your favourites as Springboks and that criticism has continued unabated.
The issue here is objectivity - which has always been a serious default in your case.

That's just it, I don't judge him and refrain from commenting, because my judgement is bias in this case. His brothers idolise him...obviously and the dad is proud, but there is a bit of family drama. I hope he is the real deal, but I fear he might not be a team player.

Load of predictable, prejudicial garbage from Moz.....which is to be expected.
The Stormers scrum stood firm, despite being up against the Oz test frontrow, 1 lock and 2 loosies and despite good old Sio and his inward scrumming
The Stormers had average v/Rensburg at 1 and the not so physical Mbonambi at 2
Malherbe had a fantastic game....one penalty conceded at scrum time thanks to Sio boring in as he always does......Malherbe conceded 1 scrum penalty just as Alexander did for the Brumbies

Good old Sio didn't work inwards, Malherbe cracked inwards....just as he did against the Beast and Marais

Nothing new here - a constant repeat of the standard views of Mozart.   Many repeats of the same old story.
I made a horrible mistake in fantasy rugby and it did not pay off.  I had Malherbe and Sio as my props - Malherbe got 15 points in the game even with the scrum penalty against him,  Sio got 6 with the penalty added to him.   Bad choice that one.  To clarify the matter - Sio did squat outside the scrumming, Malherbe did a lot.
