Francois Steyn, well where do we start, when he broke onto the scene almost ten years ago he was revelation. Strong, Fast, Fearless and a massive boot. After that 2007 World Cup, I think many of us thought we were seeing one of the greatest springbok talents of all-time. Unfortunately since then, a few things have gone against, he has been a victim of his own versatility, bad injuries and moves across to France and Japan.
His injuries meant he lost some of his maneuverability, and also put on a lot of weight. He has produced some of his worst rugby these past couple years but it;s worth remembering that in both the '07 and '11 World Cups he was one of our best performers.
He has returned to the Sharks for the season, apparently shedding 10kgs of weight, if he gets to even 75% of his previous best then in my opinion he is a must for the squad. He provides experience, he;s strong and he is a supremely talented rugby player. Also due to his kicking prowess, any penalty within 60m is withing kicking range and if not he;ll kic k into touch 5 meters from the try line.
Because he's been around for so long, people forget he's only 27, he's still got loads more to give.
In my opinion, him and Serfontein are the main contenders for 12 jersey.
What are your guys opinion? Does he deserve a place in the squad or is he a spent force?
