Schalk return excites Coetzee2015-02-23 22:30POST A COMMENTSHARE THISSchalk Burger (Gallo Images)RELATED LINKS

  • Cape Town - The Stormers will welcome the return of Schalk Burger into their squad next week following the Super Rugby season-ending injury to Rynhardt Elstadt in their defeat of the Blues at Newlands on Saturday.

Elstadt suffered three torn ligaments and a broken bone in his lower right leg which will see him out of action for at least four months.

Burger has been plying his trade in Japan after the culmination of the 2014 Super Rugby season while making a return to the Springbok setup in the process.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee foresees a rejuvenated Burger to lead his pack should the need arise, as special attention will be given to contracted Springboks in the lead up to the World Cup later this year.

"Because of the foreign-player restrictions for the clubs in Japan, Schalk hasn't played too often so he'll be in good shape by the time he joins us.

"He'll also be in a captaincy role because we'll have to rest Duane Vermeulen in terms of SARU's player requirements," said Coetzee.

Coetzee said a rather pleasing aspect of last weekend's match was the team's discipline.

One area that Stormers will be focusing on this week is the line-out.

"There are line-out issues we need to sort out.

"The Blues were street-wise so things did not pan out like we planned.

"Our execution let us down," said Coetzee.

After two rounds, the Stormers are heading the South African Conference table as well as the overall standings.

He has been resting in Japan so he is injury free which is good for older players. He may also have put some extra weight on with the off timeHaving Schalk and Vermuelen in the same backrow is lethal. Just those 2 is allready  one of the top backrows in the competition.

This is standard crap from Coetzee.  There has not been a single player coming back from the soft rugby programmes in Japan that has really been up to standard.   The Japan league provides for players to play every fortnight only - with the result that players from there is acceptable one week and sub-standard the following week - this was even the case with Fourie dui Preez.
Basically one would have to wait and see how Burger actually performs in successive matches to see whether his sojourn in Japan was of any real value.   Burger is already over 32 years of age - and to judge him solely on reputation is not realistic.
I would keep my assessment of real performance to see how he manage in Super 15 - especially bearing in mind he has not completed a full Super 15 season since 2011.

Burger was good last year for the Boks. After he broke his neck he reinvented his game, and he has done the same after the operation for meningitis. He seems to be more intelligent in his play than before.
I am more worried about him remaining injury free, that the actual standard of his rugby. If he can clock up some rugby time he should get into good form. He is 32, not possible to be over 32 if that is his age !

Just checked, he is actually under 32! He is 31 for almost another 2 months.
  1. Schalk Willem Petrus Burger Jr. is a South African rugby union player. He plays the position of flanker for the Springboks, as well as representing Stormers in Super Rugby and Western Province in the Currie Cup. Wikipedia
  2. Born: April 13, 1983 (age 31)

Poor Elstadt I feel for the lad, he had a good game and has never had a break in SA. He is good enough to play test rugby but idiots like Meyer have failed to invite him to a Bok training squad let alone come close to selecting him.

He is one of our best blind side flankers in SA

Thanks Sharkbok, I am a huge Burger fan. Yes, he might almost be 32, but he hasn't played for more than 2 years, so he's actually got 30 on the clock??? I sound like a second hand car dealer nè?

Don't get me wrong - Burger was always a top class player.   However, last year playing for the Springboks he was excellent coming from the bench - but not so obvious when he started for them.
My problem is that playing in Japan is in the words of one of the NZ players there - "soft rugby" and not as strenuous as playing in the SH.   The players coming back from Japan is not on par to what they were when they left from here.   The examples are numerous and I just want to refer to the following examples:-
*    Fourie du Preez  -   good in one game - worse the next week.*    Jacque Fourie    -   major loss of pace - no good in attacking play*    JP Pietersen      -   major loss of pace - take a longish time to recover form*    Peter Grant       -   poor form for Stormers on return
The list of returnees is getting longer and the question remains is club rugby in Japan causing players to adjust to a lower level of performance and even fitness than is required in SA?  That may also be the reason for the rather dubious injury record of returnees.
Under the circumstances I have reservations about returning players and although they would obviously be welcomed back - I want to see how they perform over a period of at least a month before making up my mind about their performances.   In saying that - I do not favour reputation players if their performances are not really convincing and selection is base d purely on reputation.

Kaino did not really do that well in the first few matches he played for the Blues.   It took time to get back to his normal level of performance and even then in the tests last year he did not do all that well.
I saw a discussion with Richard Kahui on an NZ Rugby programme  and what I said came from him more than anyone else.

Disagree ou Maaik. Kaino looked like he'd never been away and he was at his awesome best right from the get go.

Just cant let an argument go you old loser. Get a life. Have the nurses just finished changing your nappy, and given you back the laptop to play with?
He had the Cist on his back removed which developed into Meningitis. He allmost died on the operating table, or he did actually die on the operating table due to the meningitis.
It is a new day so I thought I would just forget about petty arguments, but it clearly means so much to you.

This is exactly why Arthur John left this board. Every post he made you followed him around hounding him. Just like with BiltonBek and others.
Soon it will just be you posting, with a few of the KampStaalstraad posters left.

Some would consider dying on an operating table and being brought back to life a miracle. Hell, maybe in 2 thousands years it will be Saint Schalk who died for our sins on the ruckers forum, but was brought back to life.

Since there is a difference on opinion in the case of Kaino - I went back to check his stats for the games he played in eaqrlyu on after his return from Japan.
The first game Kaino played last year in Super 15 was a bench appearance against the Cheetahs - where he showed nothing of substance.   That was followed by two games where in the first one against the Highlanders he was nothing above average and the second game against the Brumbies he put in a really poor performance.
It was only a month later that he started to show top class performances against the Hurricanes and the Waratahs.
I am afraid I have to differ from you about the initial games he played for the Blues - it was at best average - it took him a month to get back to full fitness and playing abilities.

Not all people that have posted on KampStraalstraad are without any form of a life. However their are a few that make little to no rugby contributions and their sole purpose is to follow Clevermike around with snide comments trying to look smart.
Ceradunce used to be the school librarian, while the rest of us played rugby and other sports.
He copies and pastes other peoples opinions together, to try look like he knows stuff. He will never stick his neck out with his own ideas. Nothing original, just a copy and paste from Google,

What has the last seven contributions to do with Burger or for that matter players returning from Japan?    Each topic on this forum seems to be hijacked by some members to fight really insignificant battles among themselves.   Can't we keep to rugby issues?

Great to see him coming back. The boys do seem to come back from Japan and be well off the pace so some time in S15 will help knock the rust off.
He needs a long hard look by Meyer as he is the most creative loose forward we have. No look passes, offloads plus physicality. That stuff wins the big games.

Ah Cleancut, the lost sheep!"Ah for once I was lost, but now I am found". God saved a wretch like Clean Cut.
Ha, Ha- nothing further from the truth. You are still the lost sheep, or would you prefer lamb. Just like your Lions team of lambs to the slaughter.
I will attend a local Sunday school so we can all say a prayer for your wretched soul. Do you feel comfortable with the other 7 year old minds at Sunday School?

Things must be desperate when you have to used Childrens Nursery songs to give your life some direction. HA HA.HA.
In the meantime, clinging to word play is your biggest hope and salvation. Everyone knows that Schalk contracted Menijitis through an operation, and had various other subsequent operations. The context gives the meaning, so no use hanging on grammer.

In Super 15 it may be possible to phase in Japan-based players after a major physical fitness program - but there is always the danger of injury because of lack of fitness - as happened a number of times in the past.
Without Super 15 game time and being selected directly into the test side - they under-perform in tests or get injured - eg Fourie du Preez last year.   That indeed is a major problem in making selections of Japan-based players.
