What was evident from the game on Saturday was that the Stormers played a much more comprehensive game than they did in the past.
Lets look at the stats of the key players in that regard:-
Groom - Shreuder
Tries - 1Kicks - 5Pass - 69Ball carries - 9Clean breaks - 1 Defenders beaten - 4Off-loads - 2
Du Plessis
Kicks - 6
Pass - 11Ball carries - 7Clean breaks - 1 Defenders beaten - 6
De Allende
Kicks - 2Pass - 4Ball carries - 11Defenders beaten - 4
It was clear that De Allende was short of game time and he did not perform on the level he normally achieves. However, what is also clear that the Stormers at last got rid of the headache they had in the flyhalf position for years now. Du Preez started of well in earlier matches - but I think that in the three games Du Plessis played thus far this year he showed real class in his reading of the game and in his resultant achievements.
The endless and aimless kicks of the past is not a factor on display at present - so we have a more acceptable game format taking shape. When De Allende recovers his form - the situation will improve drastically.
I am worried about one issue though and that is Kolbe. He still seems good in attack - but is a major problem in defense. In the one case in the Stormers 22 - when Du Plessis succeeded in getting a turnover - Kolbe buggered up badly and the result was a try scored by the Reds. His defense is also seriously suspect - so I really believe they should e careful in dealing with in future. They should actually give EW Viljoen a chance in the full back position and perhaps see whether the results would not be better.
