The woeful forward pass rule
I noted earlier on that the illegal plays favoured by kiwis this year were forward passes and tackling players with out the ball. I hit gold regarding forward passes. Amazi ng Beeno!!!
Now I'll be asked about force vectors and the like and I'll probably get asked to integrate the cubed root of pi, but what is obvious is the bloke who doesn't understand the basic concept of the ball coming out flat from the hands, something any kid playing rugby in NZ knows.
Nothing wrong with the forward pass rules. Not if you understand the fundamentals of physics and some of the basics of rugby.
Moz, the law of gravity doesn't apply to some so please factor this into your calculation

As to if it can be done with sheep, it seems our SA posters have shown the most interest in sheep on this forum. Then of course there was the wee stormers training program of a few years ago which involved sheep... so others are best qualified to give you guidance on "doing it with sheep" .
For a pass to be legal, immediately after the ball is released, it must be travelling slower in the forward direction than the player who passed it.
The "backwards out of the hands" fallacy is just a way for this to be explained to the general masses, but indeed it is wrong.
I will point out to Mozart that there are other forces acting on the ball after it is released which can cause the ball to drift forward. Take a stationary player and imagine he throws a typical spiral pass exactly laterally (ie not forward or backward, just flat). Due to the spin imparted on the ball, the ball will actually drift forward. Also, you seem to be forgetting about wind.
To make the claim that 95% of passes are backwards in an absolute sense and that we are bending the rules for the other 5%, I feel is a very inaccurate claim because I suspect the ratio would be very much different to that. Basically, any player travelling at any kind of decent velocity who throws a pass is going to fall into this "5%", but this happens very frequently.
To adopt Mozart's rule of strictly backwards in space passes (although consistent) would completely break rugby. Literally every passage of play would need to be checked to see whether the ball has drifted forward or not because it's not going to be obvious to the ref. It would also be near impossible to throw a legal pass when running at a decent speed. If a guy makes a break, he basically has to hold onto the ball; passing isn't an option. I mean if he's running at 30kph, he needs to throw a pass backwards at at least 30kph which is bloody difficult and simply counter-productive when all your body weight is going forwards. We'd be lucky to see 2 tries in a match under this rule and rugby would be really boring.
The forward pass problem that exists today is not large enough to make any drastic changes. Just educate TMOs more and perhaps add in some overhead cameras to give the best perspective.
If we really were to get obsessed with getting it right. I would suggest a graphic which projects a line attached to the ball passer and moves with the player. Then after the ball is passed, the line can continue to move at the same speed that the player was moving as the ball was released. This would give us pretty accurate, although not perfect results (because of mentioned spin and wind and air resistance factors). This would be pretty hard to do and I don't think it's the games biggest problem.
So basically the rule is not a problem but perhaps we need better education and a more favourable camera angle.
Interesting post Limpfischer and welcome to the board. I many cases one sees the receiver ahead of the passer like in that Crusaders try. Yet i t was not called a forward pass. That's called incompetence at best.

...not really necessary all the scientific mumbo jumbo...all you have to remember is if the ball has been passed by a New Zealander then it's a forward pass...
If the ball travels forward at any time after it's passed, it should be deemed as a forward pass.
In other words ... the recipient should receive the ball behind the mark from where it was passed.
Using the passing man's pace as an excuse is about as lame as it gets.
It's called cheating ... and as usual the Kiwis have perfected this technique.
Players could smuggle a piece of sandpaper on to the field...a couple of good rubs and bobs your uncle the rugger ball has an inner swing to it...

An expert reason for the rules is not enough to convince Mozart the world is not flat - like is the case with his opinions on both rugby and cricket, His opimion is normally based om a single incident in certain games and is of no real substance at all.
I think World Rugby based their rules on scientific evaluation and not i n mistakes in implementation made by some referees.
Yes ... sadly a crap shoot does explain much of what goes on in rugby these days.
Who can explain how refs decide which prop transgressed the laws and which one didn't. Sometimes it's obvious ... but other times it not ... and what is rather concerning is that many yellow cards and penalty trys have been issued based on this crap shoot.

it normally is the crap interpretation by the referees that is a problem - not necessarily of the rules as implied above by some of our members.
Let's use the following incident as an example. Pieter Muller passes the ball when he is just short of the 10m line. Deon Kayser catches the pass a full 5m in front of where the passer released the ball. Play goes on. I say this is a massive forward pass. What say the resident pundits?

What utter bullshit in that paragraph. The direction of the spin of the ball is normally (in more than 99%) of the cases backwards. That would cause the ball to "drift back" even more.

And as for the other forces, you forgot about the Coriolis force, which may cause different movements depending on whether the pass was made left to right, or right to left, and also depending on the hemishere where the game is played. Lets not forget the effect of charge of the static electricity caused by friction and that the ball may even be more "attracted" to some players than others....
Now for reality:
Except for the effect of STRONG winds and gravity (or even the spin that is mainly backwards), there are no other forces that will change the flight of the ball in a significant manner. A ball that is thrown forward generally GOES forward... Simple science.

Indeed m8. How the hell anyone can throw a conventional pass like an off-spinner is a mystery to me.
It comes out the back of the hand on the opposite side of the body to which the ball is being passed. IE pass left then the ball comes out the back if the right hand. From the passers perspective it's spinning in an anti-clockwise direction towards its catcher.
I'm 100% of the opinion that it should be caught behind or directly in line from where it was passed.
Perhaps the ref should add a speed factor to his instant computation of the angle of the hands.

Crumbs...it's so logical the ball will always appear forward even if you pass it backwards on moving players...it can only be verified and justified on the direction of the passers hands and motion...if the passer can do this and still get it forward per se then it's like a good" googly"Hahaha.

If you know anything about cricket and spin bowling, you will realise that a right hander putting legspin on the ball makes the ball drift to the bowlers right before hitting the ground and spinning to the left. Offspin does the opposite of this of course.

How does this relate to rugby? Well a player throwing a right handed pass has essentially imparted legspin on the ball. This will cause the ball to drift to the right (just like in cricket). And guess what, the ball drifting to the right of it's original direction means that the ball is travelling forward.
Anyone who has played rugby should have noticed this from when they pass the ball (it usually has to be a long pass for it to be noticable.)
It's even more obvious if you do a spiral punt. This imparts offspin on the ball and therefore drifts to the left. I have played fullback for 16 years so I have plenty of real life experience with this phenomena.
That being said, it really doesn't matter all that much in relation to the discussion. I just feel like I needed to defend myself when people call it a load of crap.
What's more important is to consider the impact that following the rule which mozart advocates will have on the game. You say that our current rule makes the backline stay flatter and therefore have less space?? No one is forcing them to stand flat you realise?

Let's see how many tries would be disallowed under Mozart's rule

The best example though is at 3:18 where the player releases the ball clearly short of the halfway line yet is caught by the receiving player on the halfway line.

What I was talking about is how a ball behaves when different spins are imparted on it and gave cricket as an example to try to help people understand how a rugby ball behaves.
I play rugby, tennis, cricket, and table tennis so I have a very good understanding of what happens when certain spins are imparted, and it doesn't matter which sport it is, physics remains the same. The equation actually changes if the ball was to be spun end over end, but let's not worry about that.
No I do not think it's OK to transgress the laws of the game. I do however, think it's OK to adapt existing laws in order to improve the quality and practicality of the game. This happens in rugby all the time as we strive for a better product.
