Pretoria - Bulls coach Nollis Marais has moved Jesse Kriel to fullback for their Super Rugby clash against the Cheetahs at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.
Kriel, who started at centre in the win against the Sunwolves last weekend, replaces Warrick Gelant, who has been ruled out of action due to a broken jaw sustained in the same match, in a revised back three.
Travis Ismaiel returns to the starting team as right wing, with Jamba Ulengo replacing Bjorn Basson on the left. Basson is injured.
Jan Serfontein will return to the midfield to link up with Burger Odendaal. His place on the bench will be taken by SP Marais. The former Southern Kings and Sharks player could debut for the Bulls if he takes to the field.
Marais also bracketed Arno Botha and Nic de Jager at the back of the scrum. Lappies Labuschagne is back to full fitness and is named on the bench pending Wednesday afternoon’s training session, with De Jager as possible cover, should Labuschagne pull out.
Scrumhalf Piet van Zyl has been released to the Currie Cup team for match fitness and Ivan van Zyl will deputise at scrumhalf.
Marais believes his team is due a solid performance.
“We have to get it right. We are battling to put together 80 minutes of rugby at a time. We have been lucky so far that it did not come back to bite us, but we cannot continue like that if we have title ambitions. We need to sustain our first half effort and the players are very aware of that.”
Bulls captain, Adriaan Strauss, is expecting another tough and typical local derby.
"The Cheetahs will be pumped to come here and beat us. This is one of their big matches of the year and if we cannot repel their enthusiasm and commitment by producing our own 80 minute effort, we will be in trouble. Luckily, the team is very aware of that. We are playing at home and have the expectations of our fans, but also the drive from within the team to deliver a good performance."

Centre in modern tests is like the Shield Wall in the Saxon chronicles, a brutal place ...and Kriel is not Uhtred of Bebba nburg.
How many tests did he play in before the WC and how many in the WC. He played together with De Allende as center partner in the tests before the WC exactly three times. and during the WC he played with De Villiers - who flopped in the Japan game and then four more tests in the series. In all the WC games the Meyer Fools' Rugby was played - so there was no means to really assess the player.
There is no way a reasonable assessment can be made of the player based on the rubbish where the fyhalf was effectively sidelined and the inside center was second receiver of balls from the loosies/forwards.
Meyer's list of failed bozos sure is a lengthy one.
We have MUCH better options at 13 and at 15 than this waste of space.
Who ultimately flopped worse? The players Meyer pleaded with to return to play Springbok rugby - two of whom has the sense to retire fromn international rugby because they themselves said they were not competitive anymore (Botha and Steenkamp).
Ultimately - the worst ones were Zane Kirchner, Jacque Fourie, Jean de Villiers (largely because of injury), Morne Steyn, Francois Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Willem Alberts, Victor Matfield, Jannie du Plessis.
The above were regulars in Meyer's squad - even included in the WC squad - while your list include players with very little international exposure and then also the foolish comments on players you have disliked for a long time as well. Serfontein, Kriel, Goosen, Reinach, Du Toit and Serfontein is absolute tripe on your part - mostly pr ejudice without any real substance and proven under-performance.
Serfotein had some good moments against Wales - but you refuse to give him credit at all. He was at best tried by Meyer to fill in - never really a regular in the side. I do not think he is the right guy for the job - but that is not the issue here. You turned it into an attack of all the younger players. Goosen had very little exposure in tests - and when he did you wrote him off despite good performances because you prefer the atrocious Morne Steyn and the worse Francois Steyn.
I would like to quote what you wrote above:-
"But at least most of them, Kirchner who I never liked aside, have contributed to important Bok wins. The newbies are just a dream of what fans want to see."
The essence is granted - but the question is whether in 2014 and 2015 the players you so ardetly supported at the time have still contributed to wins in tests. In some cases they actually succeeded or nearly succeeded in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in those years. One has in that regard have to look at what Matfield and Steyn contributed to the AB test in 2014 and the Perth test that same year? Morne succeeded and only a desperate penalty conversion by Lambie - which you regarded at the time as not a pressure kick - avoided a loss by the Springboks.
Players have not been given the numerous chances you so often said they had. Aside from Serfontein - most of the players you listed have had less than 5 tests played by the time the WC came around. That is not a sound basis for evaluating players. But then before they played they were already under attack by you.
I am actually delighted that the older players are out of the way and they can start afresh building up a team for the future - but that would again be destroyed by the new coach if it happens to eb Coetzee.
This is the same old argument again, Old vs Young bla bla bla! I will say this on the matter, I was very excited by Kriel when he first burst onto the international scene, but I am starting to have my doubts about the fellow now. Physically he has all the attributes but I have not seen much of that initial X-factor. Where Moz does have it wrong however, is De Allende, He is the real deal.
Kriel is proving to be the same disappointment, JJ was the same, also Taute, Goosen, Reinach.
Allende has got a shot. He has the physicality to play modern centre. But does he have the vision?
Why don't you ignore the board Watchdog? All I see is him snapping at your heels at every single one of your posts.
Seriously mate, I don't understand why you bother to respond to his meaningless drivel? I'm sure there are others like me who don't bother to read his posts and I'm sure you have better things to do with your time.
The man is a grumble bum. Period!
