Former All Blacks scrumhalf Justin Marshall was caught off guard by Tony Brown’s decision to ditch the Springboks in favor of a coaching role back home. In a recent development, NZ Rugby confirmed that Brown, the mastermind behind the Springboks' lethal attack, will join the All Blacks' coaching squad from 2028 after his current contract with South Africa expires.

Brown, a pivotal part of Rassie Erasmus’ coaching team since 2024, has been instrumental in transforming the Springboks’ offensive strategy. This strategic shift has led South Africa to consecutive Rugby Championship victories and unbeaten end-of-year tours, cementing their status as global rugby powerhouses. Despite Erasmus’ hopes to retain Brown post the 2027 World Cup, the allure of coaching his national team proved too tempting for Brown to dismiss.

Appearing on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast, Marshall expressed his astonishment.

“I think it’s great. I know Brownie really well and I see him often because the All Blacks have been playing in South Africa. I know that he’s really happy in his role over there, so that news was surprising to me because I know how much he enjoys what he’s doing now.”

Brown's rapport with Erasmus was another highlight Marshall touched on, revealing the less-known facets of their professional relationship.

"The thing he actually said to me was how much he enjoys coaching with Rassie. ‘The guy just enables me to be myself and he doesn’t demand anything.’"

This insight sheds light on the supportive and empowering coaching environment Erasmus fosters, which makes Brown’s departure even more unexpected.

Marshall concluded by reflecting on the importance of a conducive work atmosphere, hinting at how crucial such an environment is for personal and professional satisfaction. The move, while surprising, underscores Brown’s ultimate ambition to contribute to rugby in New Zealand, signaling a new chapter for both him and the All Blacks as they gear up for future challenges.

With Brown’s visionary approach soon to be part of the All Blacks’ arsenal, the rugby world eagerly anticipates the innovative strategies he will bring to his home country’s team.
